The goalof the Olympic Movement is to

contribute to building a peaceful and better world by
educating the youth through sports practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic
spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of
friendship, solidarity and fair play.
Definition: The Olympic Movement is a
Committee (IOC) for the modern concept that was designed by the International Olympic
Olympic Games. It includes everyone involved with the Games
including the National Olympic Committees, International Sports Federations as well as athletes,
judges, broadcasters, etc. The IOC established the Olympic Movement to help
behind the Games, which take express the meaning
place every two years (Winter and Summer Games). The following
passage sums up the 1OC's goal:
"To contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without
discrimination of any kind, in a spirit offriendship, solidarity and fair play."
addition, the Olympic Movement embodies and promotes the Olympic philosophy, also known
asOlympism. Olympism promotes social responsibility, universal respect and good mental, physical
and emotional health through sport and cultural education. The IOC describes
Olympism
as follows:
"Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will
and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the
joy found in effort, the educational vulue of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical
principles."(Olympic Charter, Fundamental Principles, paragraph 2).

2.2 Olympic Symbols, Ideals, Objectives and Values of Olympism

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) now has established official symbols, statements, and
and
philosophies that represent the ideals of the Games. These include the Olympic creed, motto,
symbol; the Olympic flame; the athletes' oath; and the Olympic Movement.

Olympic Creed

Olympic Motto
The Olympic motto consists of the Latin words Citius, Altius,
Fortius, which means 'Swifter, Higher, Stronger. Introduced in
1924, the motto is designed to encourage the athletes to embrace
the Olympic spirit and perform to the best of their abilities.

2.4 Indian Olympic Association

India first participated in the Olympics in 1900 in Paris. The country was represented by Norman
Pritchard, an Anglo-Indian.
The need for setting up an organisation for coordinating the Olympic Movement
in India was felt because the country was to participate in the 1920 and 1924
Olympics. Sir Dorabji Tata suggested the setting up of a sports organisation
at national level to promote
Olympic sports. Subsequently, in 1923-24, a
provisional All India Olympic Committee was set up, which organised the
All India Olympic Games (that later became the National Games of India) in
February 1924. Eight athletes from these Games were selected to

Application of Modern Technologies: Technology facilitates our lives. Its misuse, on the other
hand, can have unpleasant consequences. For example, use of computer and other electronic
devices late at night, beyond the usual sleeping hours, may affect the pattern of sleep leading
to sleeplessness. Addiction to use of mobile phones, computers and online gaming is related to

depression symptoms and is now recognised as a disease.

Recreation: Leisure activities are a must for a healthy lifestyle. Neglecting leisure can bring about
negative consequences. With disorganised planning and unhealthy leisure, people endanger
their health.
Study: Studying, writing and reading is vital to well-being. Being active at study leads to a
better physical and mental health. Prevalence of diseases like Alzheimer's, a type of dementia,
is undoubtedly lower in educated people. Being engaged in activities like reading and writing
slows down the advent of dementia.
Following a healthy lifestyle, regardless of age, has numerous health benefits. It has been proven
that it reducesthe risk of cardiovascular diseases, decreases incidence of
obesity and diabetes, the
risk of malignancy, psychiatric disorders and
cognitive dysfunction.

among the top 10 leading causes of death and disability in the world. According to the World

Health Organisation (WHO), 60% to 85% people in the world lead a sedentary lifestyle, making it
one of the most serious public health problems today
Leading a healthier lifestyle helps in many ways. Its advantages include:
1. Reduced risk of certain cancers: Poor lifestyle contributes to increased inciden
types of cancers. An active, healthy lifestyle decreases the risk of these cancers.
Physical Fitness, Wellness & Lufestyle 27

2. Diminished anxiety and depression are a direct result of switching to a healthier lifestyle. This
results in a more harmonious existence. Isolation from social circles makes one emotionally
weak and unstable.

3. Decreased risk of lifestyle diseases: Scientific thought labels heart disease, diabetes,
hypertension and certain cancers as lifestyle diseases. Better lifestyle means lower risk of
these diseases.
4. Lower risk of being overweight or obese: A healthy lifestyle prevents obesity and the risk
of becoming overweight. Since physical and social activities are a part of healthy lifestyle
and atention is paid to diet and nutrition, the benefit is optimum weight and right body
fat content.
5. Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia, which means a decrease in bone density and decreased skeletal
muscle mass, directly result from a poor and unhealthy lifestyle. They can be prevented by
leading an active, healthy lifestyle.
6. Better posture: Higher levels of activity and physical fitness are responsible for a good erect
posture in practitioners of a healthy lifestyle.
7. Increased self-esteem: Better lifestyle translates into increased self-esteem. When we realise
that we feel and look good, our self worth increases automatically. This leads to better
performance at work and a healthy social life.

3.2 Components of Physical Fitness and Welliness

Physical Fitness
Currently, physical fitness is based on the ability to carry out tasks without undue fatigue. It has
five main components:
1. Cardiovascular Endurance: This is the ability of the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients to
the tissues and to remove wastes over sustained periods of time. Cardiovascular endurance
can be improved through aerobic exercise; those performed at moderate intensity over a
relatively Ionger period of time such as running or playing tennis. This parameter reflects
the ability of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, and blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients to all
body cells during physical activity. To improve the cardiorespiratory endurance, try activities
such as walking, swimming, or cycling that keep your heart rate elevated at a safer level for
a sustained length of time.

Cardiovascular endurance is exemplified by jogging, cyeling and swimming. The Cooper

12-minute run is a popular maximal running test of cardiovascular fitness in which participants
try and cover as much distance as they can in 12 minutes. Participants run for 12 minutes and

A person's total body weight as measured on a weighing scale may not change over time.
But the weighing scale does not assess how much is lean mass (muscle, bone, tendons and
ligaments) and how much is the fat. Body composition is important to consider for health
and managing overall weight. Athletes who have good muscles tend to have higher but
healthier weight as compared to non-athletes. To improve and optimise body composition,
all the health-related components of fitness and good nutrition are critical. It is vital to be
aware that nutrition impacts exercise, and exercise impacts nutritional needs. Learning how
to eat healthier without eliminating all the important food groups and use all the natural and
nutrient-rich foods helps in getting body composition right. The right energy thus gained
will help the body with maintenance functions, improve physical work, and help your body
rebuild and repair after a strenuous workout.

Specific Fitness Requirements

Specific or task-oriented fitness is a person's ability to perform at a specific activity with a reasonable
etticiency, as in sports or military service. Specific training can prepare either an athlete or a worker
in their
particular field or sport.
Different athletic events need different training. Understandably, the training for a 400 m sprint
needs a runner to run at high speed throughout the short distance. So, the sprinter must be trained
to Tun anaerobically throughout the race. However, for a marathon, which covers a long distance,
the athlete must be trained to work aerobically; endurance must be increased to the
maximum
Anaerobic exercise is used by athletes in non-endurance sports to build power and by bodybuilders
to build muscle mass. Athletes trained under anaerobic conditions are able to perform for short
duration but at high intensity, which lasts up to roughly two minutes. Aerobic exercise allows for
lower intensity activities to be performed for longer durations of time.

3. Financial Wellness: Managing financial resources wisely brings down stress that is often a result
of inadequate income or increased expenditure after retirement, ill health or other unforesen
expenses. For college students, financial wellness is linked to good performance at study and
sport. This aspect of wellness leads to satisfaction with current and future financial situations.
4. Intellectual Wellness: This helps us tackle the changes being brought about by technology
and related advancements. Since we are now open to new ideas and thoughts, we can easily
assimilate into the progressing social structure. Also, it enables participation in social and
cultural activities. Intellectual wellness often helps in recognising creative abilities and finding
ways to expand knowledge and skills.
5. Occupational Wellness: It is the ability to achieve a balance between work and leisure time

Balance While acknowledging the constantly changing nature of life, we look to balance it
by giving sufficient attention to each of the dimensions. Lack of sufficient attention to any
one dimension results in less-than-optimal development as a person, and may possibly lead
to chronic unhappiness.
Self-responsibility-A healthy and positive person takes responsibility for their health and
happiness. They do not allow others to take control of their decisions. Self-responsibility
comes from self-awareness, including the process by which one becomes increasingly aware
of both the causes and consequences of one's behaviour.
Being Positive and Proactive- Wellness requires primarily positive perspectives and values
to live by. It also requires a strong sense of purpose and conscious, deliberate action.
Some tips to help achieve wellness include:
Surround yourself with
positive and supportive people.
Get rid of things and relationships that do not support you.
Have what you want AND want what you have.
Practise gratitude.
Care for your body: eat wel1, sleep well, exercise.
Know your values and live according to them.
Find activities that give you a sense of purpose and connection.

Body Composition
Body composition is a method of describing what the body is made up of. It includes fat, protein,
minerals and body water. It also describes weight more accurately than BMI. Body composition
analysis can accurately show changes in fat mass, muscle mass and body fat percentage.
We know that broadly, body is made up of four main components, namely muscle, fat, bone and
fluids. All are essential for our well-being but only in fixed ranges and excess or deficiency of any
of these groups is detrimental to our well-being and health.
Essentially, we can focus on body composition in two simple ways:
1. Fat Mass
This is to measure the amount of body fat we have. The body fat is necessary for the body to
function. It allows the body to store energy, protects internal organs, acts as an insulator and
regulates body temperature, amorng other things. It may not be possible to have 0% body fat, and
body fat percentage lower than 4% is generally regarded as inadequate for long-term health.
2. Fat-Free Mass (FFM)
Fat-Free Mass is all the mass in your body that is not attributed to fat. This comprises a
variety of different components-all your internal organs, skeletal muscle mass, water, etc.
Everything that is not fat is classified as Fat-Free Mass. From these two values, your body
fat percentage can be deduced by dividing your fat mass by your total body weight and
multiplying by 100. But now, we have other methods to assess the body composition.
These include:
(a) Body Mass Index: Body Mass Index, commonly known as BMI, is calculated as
weight/height'. It is also widely used as an index of relative weight. BMI used to
be a global index of nutritional status and was widely used to categorise both being
overweight and obese. But now, with the advent of better scientific methods, this
method has become less popular as it cannot distinguish between fat and lean masses
with reference to weight. Although BMI can be used for most men and women, it
may
overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. And it
may
underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.
(b) Waist Circumference: This provides a simple measure
of central body fat,
which may be more predictive of an
adverse lipid profile or insulin resistance than total fat. In
adults, waist-hip ratio is independently associated with
morbidity after adjustment for relative weight, such that the
of relative weight and body shape
use
simultaneously gives
a better estimate of risk of morbidity than either of the two.
(c) Skinfold Thickness: This is a method of predicting body
composition. Using specific calipers and pinching the skinof
the abdomen area in these calipers, we can
guess the body
fat percentage. This method is not very accurate and is out of
vogue now.

(d) Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA): It measures

resistance of the body to a small electric current.
This is done using body scanners.
Standing on the
foot area of the machine and
gripping the hand-held,
portion of the machine, a small current, usually 50 hertz,
is passed. Fat is a bad conductor of this current
and the
machine uses an algorithm to calculate the fat and muscle
mass. This is one of the most scientific methods to
measure
body composition for a layman.
