Analytics" positions itself within a dynamic theoretical framework, drawing from
key theories in educational technology, information management, and collaborative
learning. Anchored in Davis's Technology Acceptance Model (TAM, 1989), the
project hinges on the principles of perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness,
shaping user acceptance and adoption. Embracing constructivist learning, the
initiative aligns with the active construction of knowledge through environmental
interaction. Information management theories, particularly those involving data
analytics, contribute a strategic dimension, emphasizing the transformative use of
information for educational enhancement. The Social-Academic Interaction Model,
influenced by IJEDICT's findings (2021), underscores the project's commitment to
fostering collaborative interactions within the portal. The role of web portals as vital
interfaces in higher education, as emphasized by Pinho, Cláudia & Franco, Mário &
Mendes, Luis (2018), is acknowledged in the framework, highlighting their
significance in information management and decision-making. Additionally, the
integration of a genetic algorithm for automated defense scheduling, inspired by Ma.
Esther B. Chio et al. (2022), addresses logistical challenges in the thesis cycle. This

CHAPTER 2
This chapter delves into relevant literature and studies reviewed by the developers to deepen
their understanding of the project. This comprehensive review provided valuable insights
and resources related to the Web-based Student Information System, guiding the
development process and enriching the final product.
Foreign literature
According to (Allen & Seaman, 2016 and 2017) This demand is pushing universities and
other educational institutions to find new ways to optimize course delivery and scope, such
as by increasing the offering of online and blended courses of study. The popularity of online
courses continues to rise, despite a decline in the total number of tertiary students, including
both online and traditional students. In the United States alone, 6 million (29.7% of all higher
education students) took at least one course at a distance in 2015, while approximately 2.9
million students (14.3% of all higher education students) took all their higher education
instruction at a distance Online education is rapidly becoming more appealing to both
students and faculty. Technological advancements and the advantages of remote studying
(e.g., ubiquity, flexibility, personalization, convenience) make the online training system at
all primary, secondary, and higher education levels more accessible and, according to some
scholars, more effective faculty acceptance of the value and legitimacy of online education
has also been rising, while chief academic officers view the learning outcomes for online
instruction as the same or superior to face-to-face instruction
According to IJEDICT), 2021 A social-academic platform has been evaluated as one of the
vital services that foster Collaborative learning and increase the usage of academic web
portals. However, the absence of The social and academic aspects in the context of the
platforms available to the institutions in the Study has resulted in usability concerns and
reduced usage for interactions between their vital Stakeholders – tutors and students. The
importance of an institution’s web portal for alternative Learning outside physical
classrooms or lecture halls has been signalled by the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.
In this study a platform has been evaluated via a standard post-task Usability assessment
scaling metric – System Usability Scale (SUS), to examine the portals’ Usability and to
validate the construct of perceived social learning and sharing of knowledge by Random
evaluators via the post-system usability assessment tool. The outcome of the post-system
Evaluation noted empirically that, the system perceived learnability was 70.9% and the
usability Scale score was 83.9% with excellent usability at the 90th-95th percentile range.
Consequently, the Study outcome suggests that the social academic web portal platform in
the era of the pandemic is Adaptable, usable, and can be used to foster social academic
interactions between lecturers and Students in learning institutions, and therefore increase
the web portal’s usage.
Local literature
According to Pinho, Cláudia & Franco, Mário & Mendes, Luis, 2018. Web portals have
become vital for Higher Education Institutions (HEI), since they serve as an interface and
communication channel between all academic staff. Therefore, this study aims to provide a
systematic literature review (SLR) of the role of web portals as tools to support information
management in HEIs, based on various studies published up to the present day. Based on
the results obtained, it was possible to identify, explore and systematize the main themes on
this topic: (1) Software used in web portals, (2) Internal and external benefits, (3)
Acceptance of technology and (4) Management and storage of information. The evidence
demonstrates there is a major shortage of scientific articles in the HEI context. Also revealed
is the importance for these institutions of implementing a web portal appropriate to their
needs, and the web portal’s importance to help in decision-making. This SLR also suggests
future lines of research according to the gaps identified in the theoretical corpus.
According to Ma. Esther B. Chio, Petal May M. Dal , Jocelyn L. Garrido, Arlene Baldelovar,
JC Vanny Mill Saledaien(2022) Many students have difficulty deciding on research ideas,
supervision, and administration processes during the thesis writing process are ambiguous
and as a result, they are unable to graduate on time. Behind this complex activity is the
faculty who prepare on plotting for their schedule on proposal defense and final oral defense,
taking down minutes of defense proceedings, and gathering rating sheets and different thesis
documents from different thesis groups. This system's main objective is to offer a portal that
will make it simpler to follow and finish the thesis cycle. Part of the thesis cycle is the
scheduling of oral defense by the students to the panel members; automating the defense
scheduling is a key to fast track the thesis cycle process. The automated defense schedule in
this paper is implemented using a genetic algorithm. To evaluate the system's functionality
and usability, standard usability tests are carried out. Results show that 94% of the system
is appropriate and recognizable and The system’s overall functionality is 84%. Hence, the
study on automating the thesis cycle, which includes automated defense scheduling, can
address the problems in the execution of theses document gatherings, retrieving defense
minutes, and scheduling oral defense presentations.
According to R.DABLO, Ma. Lyn A.DE VILLA, Erica DIOTAY, John Vincent G(2023)
Most schools and universities nowadays are using school portals to communicate
and interact with their students and faculty. Instead of publishing information in
booklets, schools can save money by using an online gateway. It is also good for the
environment because it uses fewer resources. Students may access crucialinformation from
anywhere, at any time of day, with the use of an online portal. We are currently living in the
era of the internet, and utilizing it will be beneficial to organization and also to its users,
such as students. Portals are often utilized at college and universities when a large
number of students require immediate access to information and updates. Portals
are sometimes used by education departments to guide students to educational
resources for pleasure and learning.
Chapter 3: Material and Methods
3.1 Software: Java Development Kit (JDK)
The development of the "Web-based Capstone Portal for Colegio de Santo Cristo
de Burgos with Data Analytics" will be carried out using the Java programming
language. Java provides a robust and platform-independent foundation, ensuring
that the portal can be seamlessly deployed across various operating systems.
Leveraging the Java Development Kit (JDK) will enable the implementation of
both the backend and frontend components of the portal. The object-oriented nature
of Java enhances code maintainability and scalability, essential for a complex
system like the capstone portal.
The data used for the development and testing of the capstone portal will consist of
a synthetic dataset representing diverse capstone projects from different disciplines.
This dataset includes project metadata such as title, author, academic year,
discipline, and abstract. Additionally, the dataset incorporates simulated data for
user interactions, comments, and collaborative activities within the portal. The use
of a comprehensive and realistic dataset ensures that the portal's functionalities are
thoroughly tested and optimized for real-world scenarios.
