Trivia2:Ten has the meaning of totality and unity, meaning that each one of Christ's mysteries is
part of his total person and work and expresses its unity and totality, as well as its thorough
contemplation by the person who says this decade of the rosary.This is why the rosary is
divided into groups of ten Hail Marys.
Trivia 3: It is widely believed that in 1214 St. Dominic had a vision of Mary. She is said to have
presented him with the rosary, both the beads and the prayers to be prayed.Dominic had a
tremendous devotion to Mary and the rosary, which he promoted wherever he traveled to
preach. He encouraged Catholics to gather in small groups to pray together what was an early
form of the rosary together. These were the beginning of the rosary popularity in many Catholic
countries.
Trivia 4: In 2002, Pope John Paul II wrote a letter to all Catholics regarding the Rosary. In this
letter, which was entitled The Most Holy Rosary, Pope John Paul II announced the addition of
the Luminous Mysteries to the Rosary history in addition to the traditional mysteries of the
rosary...(Joyful,Sorrowful,Glorious Mysteries).The Luminous Mystery Rosary or the Mysteries of
Light, as they are also called, focus on the public life of Jesus, the years He was preaching
spanning the time between His Baptism and His death.They are called the Mysteries of Light

John's Gospel.

Trivia 6: Rosary means a crown of roses Rosary is derived from rosarium a Latin word that
means a crown of roses. It is believed when you pray the rosary it is like you are taking a walk
through Mary’s beautiful garden of roses. Its use started in the 3rd century Rosary was adopted
in the 3rd century by the Eastern monks from there; various forms of the rosary were developed.

The Second Joyful Mystery,The visitation of Mary to Saint Elizabeth.Mary arose in those
days, into a city of Juda and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth,her
cousin.When Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb; and
Elisabeth was filled with the holy and she spoke out with a loud voice, and said: "Blessed art
thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Mary said that the Lord is mighty for
He has done great things for her,and holy is His name(Luk 1,39-49)
The Third Joyful Mystery,The Birth of our Lord.The days were accomplished that she should
be delivered and she brought forth her firstborn son, there was no room for them in the inn and
there were in the same country of shepherds abiding in the field.The angel of the Lord came
upon them and said: "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be
to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the
Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes,
lying in a manger". (Luk 2,6-12)
The Fourth Joyful Mystery,The presentation.The days of her purification according to the law
of Moses were accomplished, they brought Him to Jerusalem, to present Him to the Lord. A pair
of turtledoves, or two young pigeons,and there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was
Simeon and blessed them and said unto Mary, His mother: "Behold, this child is set for the fall
and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword
shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."(Luk
2,22-35)
The Fifth Joyful Mystery,The Finding in the temple.Now His parents went to Jerusalem
every year at the feast of the pass over.He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem
after the custom of the feast. When they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus
tarried behind in Jerusalem, and Joseph and His mother don’t know about this. After three days
they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking
them questions.
The First Sorrowful Mystery,The Agony in the Garden.Then Jesus went with them to a place
called Gethsemane, and said: “Sit here, while I go yonder and pray”.Peter and the two sons of
Zebedee(James and John) is with Him.He began to be sorrowful and troubled.Inspite of this He
prayed to God: “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done.”The disciples
were slepping so He went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. Then he
came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest?Rise, let us
be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.” (Matthew 26:36-46).It was Satan whom betrayed Him.
The Second Sorrowful Mystery,The Scourging at the Pillar.Pilate took Jesus and scourged
him;they came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.
Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they
cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him,
for I find no crime in him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law he ought to
die, because he has made himself the Son of God.” (John 19:1-7)
The Third Sorrowful Mystery,The Crowning with Thorns.They stripped him and put a scarlet
robe upon him, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on his head, and put a reed in his right
hand. And kneeling before him they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they spat
upon him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they
stripped him of the robe, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.
(Matthew 27:27-31)
The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery,The Carrying of the cross.When they had mocked him, they

carry his cross. And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of a

The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery,The Crucifixion and Death of our Lord.There they crucified
him, and with him two others, one on either side, Dismas (the Good Thief) and Gestas (the
Impenitent Thief) and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote a title(INRI) and put it on the cross;
it read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Many of the Jews read this title, for the place
where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in
Greek.When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one
for each soldier; also his tunic.
The First Glorious Mystery,The Resurrection.They went to the tomb and found the stone
rolled away from the tomb,but when they went in they did not find the body.Two men stood by
them and said: “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.
Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that he must be delivered into the
hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise.’’ It was Mary Magdalene, Mary
the mother of James and the other women with them who told this to the apostles and they did
not believe them. Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen
cloths by themselves; and he went home wondering at what had happened. (Luke 24:1-12).
The Second Glorious Mystery,The Ascension. So when they had come together, they asked
him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you
to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority and you shall receive
power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem
and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.”When He had said this, as they were
looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.”This Jesus, who was taken
up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:6-
11).
The Third Glorious Mystery,The Descent of the Holy Spirit.When the day of Pentecost(50
days after the Easter)had come, they were all together in one place.Then a sound came from
heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.They
were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance. (Acts 2:1-4).
The Fourth Glorious Mystery,The Assumption.For the increase of the glory of that same
august Mothe and the exultation of the entire Church,The authority of our Lord Jesus Christ and
the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul declare,that the Immaculate Mother of God, having
completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly
glory.According to Catholic Dogma,the feast of The Assumption was held at August 15. This
holy day marks the occasion of the Virgin Mary’s bodily ascent to heaven at the end of her life.
The Fifth Glorious Mystery,The Coronation. A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon
under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars;She brought forth a male child, who is
to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne,
and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which to be
nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. (Revelations 12:1-6).
The First Luminos Mystery,The Baptism of our Lord. Jesus came from Galilee to the
Jordan to John and be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be
baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for thus
it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately
from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending
like a dove, and alighting on him; and the Lord’s voice from heaven is saying, “This is my
beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:13-17)
The Second Luminous Mystery,The Wedding Feast at Cana. On the third day there was a
marriage at Cana in Galilee.Mary and Jesus was also invited with his disciples. When the wine
failed,Mary said this to Jesus and say to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now six jars
were standing there for the Jewish rites of purification.Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with
water.”and they did. “Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast.” When the
steward of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from
(though the servants who had drawn the water knew)This, the first of his miracle, Jesus did at
Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him. (John 2:1-11).
The Third Luminous Mystery,The Proclamation of the Kingdom. Now when he heard that
John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in
Caperna-um by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali.The people who sat in darkness
have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has
dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is
at hand.” (Matthew 4:12-17) In this mystery,Jesus taught them how to pray the “Lord’s Prayer”
The Fourth Luminous Mystery,The Transifiguration.He took Peter,John and James with
Him on the mountain to pray.While He was praying, the appearance of the spirit of Elijah and
Moses was there,and his clothes became dazzling white. Now Peter and those who were with
him were at slept but wakened after looking at His glory. Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is well
that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—
not knowing what he said. As he said this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they
were afraid as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my
Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And
they kept silence and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen. (Luke 9:28-36).
The Fifth Luminous Mystery,The institution of the Eucharist Now as they were eating,
Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat;
this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying,
“Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins. I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I
drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” And when they had sung a hymn, they went out
to the Mount of Olives. (Matthew 26:26-30).
