1. Mirai was invited by JISMO scientists to observe the changes in the aquatic ecosystem in
their experimental ponds. They had three ponds of the same size which have the same
number of fish and aquatic plants. They added a layer of cooking oil to pond B, drained
industrial waste to pond C, and added nothing to pond A as the control pond. After that,
they left the ponds for one week.

After one week, which of the following descriptions is correct about the ponds?

A. Pond B has more fish than pond A because the oil layer prevents the fish from being
hunted by predators.
B. Pond A has more fish than pond C because it has more ammonia as an essential nutrient
for fish growth.
C. Pond B has more fish than pond C because the fish get oxygen from the aquatic plants,
while the fish in pond C are poisoned.
D. Pond C has more fish than pond B because the wastewater sinks to the bottom of pond
C. while the fish in pond B cannot breathe.

3. As the season changes from summer to autumn, the leaves of some trees turn into a vibrant
red-orange color. Those trees are called deciduous
trees, while the trees that remain green regardless of
the season are called evergreen trees. The change of
leaves in deciduous trees is their survival strategy.

Which of the following options correctly describes the

cause of color change in deciduous tree leaves?

better at absorbing sunlight for photosynthesis.
B. In autumn, trees get less sunlight so the green pigment needed for photosynthesis is
broken down, and the leaves produce new red pigment.
C. The soil becomes drier and there is not enough nitrogen to make the green pigment, so
the leaves produce red pigment for photosynthesis.
D. In autumn, trees get less carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, so the leaves produce red
pigments to absorb more carbon dioxide.

21. The picture below shows an exhibition called Chladni singing. The mic which was connected
to the speaker was connected to the center of the metal plate. The woman’s voice created a
unique pattern of sand. We can “see” sound vibrations with sand scattered above it.

Which of the following options is incorrect about sound patterns in the exhibition?

A. The sand bounced vigorously on the vibrating parts, leaving an empty part.
B. The sand was collected in the still parts, leaving sand in these parts.
C. The sand was collected around the metal plate because this part vibrated the most.
D. The sand that was close to the metal plate bounced vigorously because of the vibration.

22. To observe the relationship between aquatic plants and killifish, beakers A, B, and C of the same
size containing the same amount of water were prepared. Beakers A and B were placed in a
bright room while beaker C was put in a dark room. Beakers B and C contained aquatic plant.

The killifish in beaker A weakened a little the day after starting the observation. That was
probably due to the decrease in certain substance that killifish use to live. What substance is it,
and which organ is used by the killifish to take up the substance?

A. Carbon dioxide, gill

B. Oxygen, fin
