Recall
The learners will answer two (2) True or false questions about the previously
discussed lesson.

1. True or false. The writing path is the key difference between linear text
(verbal) and non-linear text (visual)
2. True or false. Visual elements include graphs, tables, maps, illustrations,

material.

Daily Dose of English (5 minutes)

The learners will be given set of words from the topic and that they need to
spell out.

We cannot avoid the fact that we will encounter problems in our lives.
But no matter how hard they are, there are always appropriate solutions to them.

given competency?)
Idea development is essential in writing. This is done by organizing ideas in a
logical and clear manner that suits the writer’s purpose. To achieve this, it is
necessary to use appropriate grammatical signals or expressions.

Pattern of idea development refers to the structure of writing on how the ideas are
being presented.

These are the four most common pattern of idea development or patterns of
organization: General to particular, Claim- Counterclaim, Problem- Solution,
Cause-Effect and others.

Problem- Solution
This pattern of idea development is used when a writer identifies a problem and
addresses it by presenting one or more solutions. A problem refers to the
unsatisfactory situation that causes troubles or difficulties. A solution on the other
hand, refers to the ways in solving or minimizing the problem.

Grammatical signals to be used for problem-solution pattern of idea development:

because, cause, since, as a result, in order to, and so that, as a solution, and one
way.

Task 1: Underline the problem and encircle the solutions presented in the
paragraph.

Drug abuse is one of the leading social issues in many countries. This
problem has been the cause of many crimes and health concerns. However, the
threat of prohibited drugs can be fought. One way to solve this is through
education. Everyone needs to be educated about the dangers of using
prohibited drugs. People need to be aware of the harmful effects of these drugs
to their health, family, career, and society. Another solution is to increase police
manpower and create effective laws to stop dealers. If the authorities will
strictly impose these laws, this problem will be addressed. Drug abuse is a
threat, but if the community and the government will act together, this problem
will be controlled.
Task 2: Read the paragraph and see how the signal words were applied.

Weightlessness in Space
Astronauts face many problems in space caused by weightlessness. One of these problems is
floating around the cabin. To solve this problem, astronauts wear shoes that are coated with
a special adhesive. This adhesive sticks to the floor of the cabin. Serving food is another
problem. It won't stay put on the table! Experts solved this problem by putting food and drinks
in pouches and tubes. It only needs to be mixed with water. Weightlessness also causes
problems when an astronaut tries to work. The simple task of turning a wrench or a doorknob
can be difficult. Since there is no gravity to keep him down, when he exerts a force in one
direction, the opposite force may flip him over completely. To solve this problem, he must be
very careful about how much force he uses to do these simple tasks. Here on earth, life is
much simpler, thanks to gravity.
