Education Challenges in IR 4.0 Era

This summary outlines key points from a presentation on education in the era of IR 4.0. IR 4.0 represents the digital revolution and combines human and technological capabilities. It has transformed industries through automation, data exchange, and other technologies. Education must now focus on developing innovative talents and training students in interdisciplinary environments. Teachers face challenges adapting to students with shorter attention spans and integrating new technologies into teaching. Blended learning combining online and classroom elements can help higher education transform and embrace IR 4.0.

This is summary of a slide presentation titled “Education in the Era of IR 4.

0” by
Hasnah Haron which was presented at 2018 International Conference on Information
Management and Technology (ICIMTech 2018).

IR 4.0 is known as the ‘digital revolution’ as it combines technological and human

capacities through self-learning. it has four stages of revolutions which are 1 st industrial
revolution, 2nd industrial revolution, 3rd Industrial revolution and 4th Industrial revolution.
Besides, IR 4.0 also represents a movement towards the reasonable goals of industry and
production. ASEAN countries are undergoing industrial transformation on an unprecedented
scale with 9 interconnected pillars of IR4.0: automation, data exchange, cloud computing,
cyber-physical systems, robots, big data, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of things
(IoT) and semi-autonomous industrial methods. Industry 4.0 can be summarized by six
building blocks.

Traditional education has largely contributed to the current level of industrial

development and technological progress. The role of the university: the formation of future
technologies, being a testing ground for innovation and training for future generations. At the
moment, education is connecting to mobile devices through cloud applications and is no
longer limited to knowledge, but extends to the acquisition of skills. With the expansion of
network services at the national and global levels, physical boundaries are no longer barriers
to education.

Nothing remains the same in the future as everybody has too many sources of
distractions especially new generation of students who are constantly changing. Our brains
get rewire and it results in reduced attention spans. What we learnt during our training will
not last our entire career, as progress accelerates. Schools often do not help much in choosing
a profession.

In 4.0 revolution. Teaching are not to be expected to be same as before. Teachers need
to change in order to be able to catch up with the current generation. There are seven
challenges that need to be changed by teachers.

Developing and under-developed countries lack innovative talents. To take full

advantage of the new wave of industrialization, the country's higher education system should
focus not only on the training of qualified people based on knowledge, but also on the
development of innovative talents, especially high-level scientists and technologists. These
scientists must be trained in an interdisciplinary environment where technologists must
understand the humanities and social sciences and vice versa.

Generalized blended learning is a combination of e-learning and classroom teaching.

Virtual environments are of great educational value in the process of transmitting information
and interactive participation, whether in real time (for example, video conferencing) or the
participation of non-simultaneous participants (for example, forums and chats). Instead of
struggling with these new technologies and the associated new learning models, higher
education systems should explore how they can embrace them and transform the teaching and
learning environment for the benefit of students and teachers.

In conclusion, given the fourth industrial revolution, changes are occurring and
everyone especially teachers need to rise up to the challenge to adapt to it.
