PART 2. Reading 25 points

Directions. Read the following article.
The Environment

A Most Scientists believe that humans caused today’s major environmental problems. They say we have ignored two
important principles of nature. First, natural resources have a limit. There is only so much life that each ecosystem (for
example, a forest, a river, or an ocean) can support. Second, all of our actions have effects. If we try to change one part of
nature, we change others as well. For example, DDT is a toxic chemical that farmers once used on their crops to kill pests.
However, the chemical also ended up in plants and food.

Losing Natural Resources

B Each year, people in the USA use about 30 percent of the world’s energy and materials, like oil. Other
industrialized nations also use more than they need. If this continues, there will be no resources for anybody to use.
According to some people, the global supply of oil will last only fifty years.

C However, some people argue that the future will be better. They say technology will help us create new resources.
For example, solar energy will replace coal and oil, and plastic will replace metals like tin and aluminum. In fact, this has
been happening for some time. However, producing these new resources can cause pollution

Environmental Pollution
D For many years, we have been producing a lot of waste. We have also created new products that cannot be
recycled. The result is pollution, and air pollution is a problem for us all. The greatest cause of air pollution is the automobile.
It produces at least 80 percent of air pollution. Air pollution can cause serious illnesses such as bronchitis and lung cancer.

E Burning coal, oil, and wood releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. A thick "blanket" of these gasses traps
heat within our atmosphere. We call this the greenhouse effect. The result of the greenhouse effect is global warming.
Scientists believe that global warming will cause flooding and rising sea levels. It could cause serious climatic change and
social problems (Stevens 1995; Lemonick 1995).
F Today, more people, businesses and governments want to protect the environment. People save energy around the
home, recycle, take buses, and plant trees. But will that be enough?
