about.
2. Represent unknown numbers with Let the first number "n". Then the second number
variables. to be "n + 1".
3. Translate the rest of the problem
into a mathematical n + (n + 1) = 15

2n + 1 = 15
4. Solve the problem.
2n = 14
n=7
5. Check your work and make a 7 + 8 = 15
conclusion. Therefore, the numbers are 7 and 8.

B. Age Problem
Example 3: The present age of Jacob’s father is three times that of Jacob. After 5
years, sum of their ages would be 70 years. Find their present ages.

1. Read through the problem carefully,

Find the present ages of Jacob and his father.

Let Jacob’s age = x years
His father’s age = 3x years

After 5 years
2. Represent unknown numbers with
variables.
Jacob’s age = x + 5
Father’s age = 3x + 5

Sum of their age = 70

3. Translate the rest of the problem into
x + 5 + 3x + 5 = 70

X + 5 + 3x + 5 = 70
4x + 10 = 70
4x = 60
4. Solve the problem.
X = 15 - Jacob’s age

3x = 3(15) = 45 - Father’s age

X + 15 = 4x
X – 4x = -15
4. Solve the problem.
-3x = -15
X=5
5. Check your work and make a conclusion. Therefore, Ariel’s present age = 5 years.

C. Geometric Problem

Example 5: A rectangle has a perimeter of 320 meters and its length L is 3 times its

1. Read through the problem
carefully, and figure out what Find the length, width and area of a rectangle.
it's about.
Use the formula of the perimeter to write.

2 L + 2 W = 320
2. Represent unknown numbers

We now rewrite the statement "its length L is 3 times
its width W" into a mathematical equation as follows:
L=3W
3. Translate the rest of the We substitute L in the equation 2 L + 2 W = 320 by 3
problem into a mathematical W.
expression/equation. 2(3 W) + 2 W = 320
4. Solve the problem. Expand and group like terms.
8 W = 320
Solve for W.
W = 40 meters
Use the equation L = 3 W to find L.
L = 3 W = 120 meters
Use the formula of the area.

1. Read through the problem carefully, and Find the length and width of the
figure out what it's about. rectangle.
The relationships described in equation
form are as follows:

L = 2W – 5 and P = 44
For a rectangle, the perimeter is defined
by:
2. Represent unknown numbers with variables.
P = 2W + 2L

Substituting for and the value for the

perimeter yields:

44 = 2W + 2 (2W – 5)
Which simplifies to:
3. Translate the rest of the problem into a
mathematical expression/equation.
44 = 2W + 4W - 10
Further simplify to find the length and
width:

4. Solve the problem. 44 + 10 = 6W

54 = 6W
54
W= or 9

C. Geometric Problem

Problem 5: The perimeter of a rectangle is 50 feet and its area is 150 feet 2. Find the
length L and the width W of the rectangle, such that L > W.

1. Read through the problem carefully,

Find the length and width of the rectangle.
and figure out what it's about.
Use the formula of the perimeter to write

expression/equation.
___________________
Solve the above for W
W = 25 – L

Substitute W by 25 - L in the equation L W =

150
L(25 - L) = 150

Expand the above equation and rewrite with

right term equal to zero.
-L2 + 25L - 150 = 0
4. Solve the problem.
The above is a quadratic equation with two
solutions.
L = 10 and L = 15
