GUY FAWKES NIGHT OR BONFIRE NIGHT IN ENGLAND

-Every year on the 5th of November Guy Fawkes (pronounced /gai foks/) is remembered.
-This date, the 5th of November, coincides with the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot (conspiración de la
pólvora)

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GUNPOWDER PLOT:

- In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes together with a group of other people attempted to blow up (volar
por los aires) the Houses of Parliament in London, the place where the laws were made.
- They wanted to kill the king, King James, and the king’s leaders.
- In order to kill them, Guy Fawkes and the group of other men planned to put barrels of gunpowder
(pólvora) in the basement of the building.
- The reason why they wanted to kill the king was that Guy Fawkes and his group were Catholic and
they thought that the former queen (la anterior reina) Queen Elizabeth I (se lee Queen Elizabeth the
first) had made some laws against the Roman Catholics.
After her came King James to the throne. The Catholics thought he was going to change those lows
against their religion, but he didn’t.
Under his reign, the Catholics in England had to practice their religion in secret and there were even
fines (multas) for those who didn’t attend the Protestant church on Sunday. (Protestant was the
religion that Queen Elizabeth and King James had chosen for the country).
- What happened? Guy Fawkes was asked to watch over (vigilar) the barrels of gunpowder and to
light the fuse (prender la mecha), but after he could do it, he was discovered by the soldiers of the
King on the morning of the 5th of November.
He was arrested and taken to the Tower of London where he was tortured and asked about the rest
of men.
- In celebration of his survival, King James I ordered that people of England should have a great
bonfire (hoguera) on the night of the 5th of November.

CURRENT (ACTUALES) TRADITIONS DURING THIS CELEBRATION IN THE UK:

- People make Guys, which are like scarecrows (espantapájaros) made out of old clothes stuffed
(relleno) with paper or straw (paja). These Guys are a reminder of Guy Fawkes.
- The scarecrow called Guy Fawkes is burnt in a bonfire (hoguera) during the celebrations.
- Fireworks to remember the gunpowder Guy Fawkes hid in the basement of Parliament.
- Traditional Bonfire Night food:
. The bonfires are also used to cook potatoes wrapped in foil (patatas envueltas en papel de
aluminio) and to heat up (calendar) soup for the people who are watching the fireworks.
. Sausages and marshmallows are also cooked and toasted in the fire.
. The traditional cake eaten on Bonfire Night is called Parkin Cake. This cake is made with:
