SCIENCE-Solar-System With Answer Keys

The document provides information about teaching students ages 8-9 about the solar system. It aims to teach students to identify the components of the solar system, describe each member, and know the proper formation of the planets. The lesson discusses that the eight planets orbit the sun, classified as inner terrestrial planets of Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars that are rocky, and outer gas giant planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune that are large and gaseous. An activity asks students to match planets to descriptions and fill in blanks about their characteristics.

SCIENCE (SOLAR SYSTEM)

(8 TO 9 YEARS OLD)
I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:

a) Identify the components of the solar system.
b) Describe each member of the solar system.
c) Identify the proper formation of the planets in the solar system.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Solar System
III. LEARNING PROCEDURE
DISCUSSION

 The eight planets travel around the sun and comprise the solar system. The planets
are held in orbit by the sun’s gravity.
 The eight planets in the solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The planets in our solar system are divided into two groups.
These are the inner and the outer planets. The inner planets are the four planets close to
the sun, they are called terrestrial planets. The outer planets are those farther from the sun,
they are called Jovian planets.
 The inner or terrestrial planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are solid
and are mostly made up of rocks and metal; they do not have rings. These are the planets
closer to the sun.
 The outer or Jovian planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are called
gas giants. They are very large and are mostly made up of gas. They are huge planets with
dense cores wrapped by thick gaseous materials. These gas giants are so-called because they
are much larger than the terrestrial planets and are mostly made up of gas. All of these gas
giants have rings.
 Parts of the Solar System
1) Sun - It is the main star of the solar system. All the planets rotate around in drawing
different orbits.
2) Mercury – The smallest planet in our solar system and nearest to the sun, Mercury is only
slightly larger than Earth’s Moon. Mercury is the fastest planet in our solar system.
3) Venus - Venus is the second planet from the sun and is Earth’s closest planetary neighbor.
It is the hottest planet.
4) Earth - Earth is our home planet, the third planet from the sun, and the only place we
know that’s inhabited by living.
5) Mars - It is also known as the “red planet”. Mars is a Dusty, cold, desert world with a very
thin atmosphere.
6) Jupiter - Jupiter is the fifth planet from our sun and is, by far, the largest planet in the
solar system and has the shortest day in the solar system. Jupiter’s stripes and swirls are
cold, windy clouds of ammonia and water, floating in an atmosphere of hydrogen and
helium.
7) Saturn - Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and the second-largest planet in our solar
system. It has seven rings and more than 60 moons.
8) Uranus - Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun, with the third largest diameter in our
solar system. The “ice giant” is surrounded by 13 faint rings and 27 small moons as it
rotates at a nearly 90-degree angle from the plane of its orbit.
9) Neptune - Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun and the only planet in our solar
system not visible to the naked eye and the first predicted by mathematics before its
discovery. It is the windiest planet with winds up to 1,200 mph.

IV. ACTIVITY PRACTICE

INSTRUCTION: Match each planet to its description.
