I. What is the significance of the research article you have chosen to your Related
Learning Experience?
The effect of exercise activities on the prevalence of GDM was found to be not
significant. However, the results of the study showed that there is a 24% decrease of
occurrence of GDM among the group of pregnant women who performed exercises
compare to the group who don’t. Moreover, exercise is important not only because it helps
prevent GDM but also because of its long term health benefits and improves the whole
pregnancy experience of the mother. Exercise can aid in decreasing blood sugar levels
and enhance maternal and prenatal outcomes as well as improve physical fitness.
Additionally, based on one article, ta 25-day structured aerobic exercise can help
efficiently manage FBG and plasma insulin levels. Furthermore, the research observed
that women with low physical activity in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy are at a higher
risk of development of GDM compared to those who are physically fit. In conclusion, the
study recommends that physical activity or exercises should be accompanied with other
interventions such as a change of lifestyle in order to further decrease the risk of
gestational diabetes on obese pregnant women.
IV. Would this practice change/improve process of patient care? How about
patient outcomes?
An increase in physical activity and performing exercises can improve the physical
well being of a person as well as provide long-term health benefits. Moreover, this
research would encourage women to exercise as well as change their lifestyle and diet in
order to decrease the occurrence of gestational diabetes mellitus. By making exercise a
habit for women, the rate of gestational diabetes mellitus can decrease as well as the
occurrence of maternal and prenatal complications. Moreover, exercise has a lot of
benefits aside from weight control such as it helps your body manage blood sugar and
insulin levels, improves mental health, and lessen the risk of cancer. Additionally, regular
exercise can during pregnancy have many benefits such improving posture and reducing
common discomforts such as backaches and fatigue.
V. Identify a nursing theory related to the article findings and discuss/describe how
these findings support/contradict to your identified nursing theory
Dorethy Orem developed the Self-care Deficit Theory in order to enhance the
quality of nursing care. Furthermore, this theory focuses on the ability of the patient to
perform self-care which are independent practices that maintains the life, health and well-
being of an individual. The theory also states that an individual should be responsible for
performing physical activities is also a way of self-care as the patient can independently
take care of herself for the well-being of her baby. The nurse should prioritize in providing
the mother with proper prenatal care and educate her on the benefits on exercise on the
prevention of gestational diabetes mellitus. By promoting self-care, the mother will be able
to independently take care of her physical and mental well-being, and can prioritize in
