Introduction to Wind
Turbine Generators
and Solar Energy

Prof. Dr. M. A. Matin, EEE, CUET

1
Wind Energy & Generators
Wind power is the conversion
of wind energy (1.2TW) into a
useful form of energy, such
as:
Using wind turbines produce
electrical energy by wind
turbine Generators (kW-GW,
5kW & 0.9 MW in BD)
Windmills for mechanical
energy (Grinding stones etc)
Wind pumps for water
pumping, drainage or sails
to propel ships
Wind is free and clean
source of energy but main
problem is fluctuation in supply 2
Wind Energy
Advantages
Electricity without pollution, clean,
hazardless & renewable
Wind is widely distributed, all have
wind energy (peace)
At a very local level (even in islands)
Power transmission loss is reduced
Low risk, reduced technical failure
Ever 3 year capacity is doubling….
Faster growing energy sector word wide
Disadvantage
Depends on flow of air 4m/s, seasonal
Energy production cost is still a bit high
Connection & disconnection is complex
Future
Dramatic cost reduction is expected…

All country set target for wind power…
