Assignment
A five-year survey was conducted to assess anthropogenic threats on
mammal species in Two unprotected forest areas of Uttarakhand . A
total of 54 mammal species were identified and assessed in these two
areas (Forest A and Forest B). The results of the assessment are
Shown both in the form of table and pie chart, as given below.

Q - Discuss the conservation measures that need to be urgently

implemented in both these areas on the basis of the above threat
assessment .
A- The following conservation measures need to be urgently
implemented in both forest areas:
● Habitat loss prevention: This can be done by declaring the two
forests as protected areas and enforcing strict anti-deforestation
laws. The government should also work with local communities
to develop sustainable land use practices that minimize forest
loss.
● Poaching prevention: This can be done by increasing the
number of forest rangers and patrolling the forests more
frequently. The government should also work to reduce the
demand for poached wildlife products by educating the public
about the negative impacts of poaching.
● Hunting by locals prevention: This can be done by providing
alternative livelihoods for locals who rely on hunting for
income. The government should also work to educate locals
about the importance of wildlife conservation.
● Human-wildlife conflict mitigation: This can be done by
building barriers between human settlements and forest areas to
prevent wild animals from entering and causing damage. The
government should also compensate farmers for crop losses
caused by wild animals. In addition to these general measures,
there are also some specific actions that can be taken in each
forest area:
In addition to these general measures, there are also some specific
actions that can be taken in each forest area:
● Forest A: The main threat to Forest A is habitat loss from
agricultural expansion. To address this, the government could
provide financial incentives to farmers to adopt sustainable
agricultural practices that reduce deforestation. The government
could also work to develop an alternative agricultural land bank
to reduce the pressure to clear forests for agriculture.
● Forest B: The main threat to Forest B is poaching. To address
this, the government could work with local communities to
develop anti-poaching patrols. The government could also
provide training and equipment to forest rangers to help them
better detect and apprehend poachers.
It is important to note that these are just a few examples of
conservation measures that could be implemented. The specific
measures that are most appropriate will vary depending on the
specific ecological and socio-economic conditions of each forest area.
It is also important to involve local communities in the development
and implementation of conservation plans.
