Third Quarter- Module 1

Week 1
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the

Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module will help you learn important science ideas. You will understand these
ideas through various activities.

Below are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do Not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module.
2. Don’t forget to answer What am I good at? before moving on to the other
activities included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and
gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
What’s my target?

This module will help you understand the effects of force

when applied to an object.
At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. identify the main types of forces
2. identify the different forces applied to an object to change its
size and shape
3. describe what happens to an object’s shape when force is
applied
4. describe what happens to an object’s size when force is
applied
5. create a vlog showing of changing the size and shape of an
object and its effect.

What am I good at?

Directions: Read each item carefully. Encircle the letter of the
correct answer.

1. Which force will you apply to change the size and shape of
the illustration below?

A. pounding B. squeezing C. bending D. cutting

2. Which main type of force is applied when scrubbing the

floor?
A. full force C. partial force

1
B. non-contact force D. contact force

3. Which statement describes a ponytail when stretched?

A. It will become longer. C. It will become thicker.
B. It will become shorter. D. It will become heavier.

4. When a football is kicked, what sudden change will happen

to it?
A. It will change its color. C. It will change its taste.
B. It will change its shape. D. It will change its texture.

5. The flowers below are made of modeling clay. This shows

that modeling clay can be ___________into different forms.
A. squeezed C. hammered
B. shaped D. pounded

Lesson
Effects of Force on the Size and
1 Shape of an Object

Force can affect the size and shape of objects. These forces
are pressing, bending, twisting, pounding, etc.

What’s to look back?

Can you guess what the baker is doing?

What will the baker do to form the flour into a pizza
dough?

2
What will I do?

Activity 1
Directions: Look closely at the pictures then answer the
questions below.

A. eggs B. tin can C. garter D. mango tree

Questions:

1. What will you do to change the physical appearance of

pictures A-C?
_______________________________________
2. What are you going to do so you could break, pound or
stretch them?
___________________________________________________
3. Can you change the physical appearance of objects
without touching them?
________________________________________________
4. What about in picture D, what is happening to the
mango fruit? ____________
5. Did the boy touch the fruit? _____________
6. What are the two types of forces that require objects to
move or to change their size and shape?
______________________________________________________________

3
Activity 2
Directions: Apply any possible contact force or forces to
change the physical appearance of the given materials. Write
your answer in the table below.
Name of Force Changes happened
Materials Applied Size shape

1. garterized
headband

2. piece of cloth

3.disposable cup

What’s the meaning?

Effects of Force on the Size and Shape of an Object

✔ Force is either a push or a pull. It occurs when two or more

objects interact with each other.
✔ There are two main types of forces.

4
1. Contact Force occurs when the object exerting the
force touches another object In Activity 1, your hands
come in contact on the egg causing it to break.
2. Non-Contact Force occurs when the objects do NOT
touch each other. The fruit may fall without anytime being
pulled.

✔ Below are the different contact forces applied to objects

Pounding, bending, twisting and crumpling are ways of
changing the size and shape of objects.

pounding bending twisting crumpling

What’s more to do?

Direction: Study the materials and their changes. Write your
answers in the table.

What did I get?

I learned that contact force and non-contact force are the two
main types of forces.
The size and shape of the objects may change when force is
applied on them.

What can I show?

Directions:

A. Read the question. Then answer it briefly.

Mother asks you to prepare breakfast for the family. When
you open the fridge, there are plenty of foods. There are plenty
of eggs, bacon, cheese, and hotdogs. What are you going to do
with these food products before cooking them?
B. Create a vlog while preparing the above given food products.

How’s my target now?

6
Directions: Read and analyze each question. Write the letter of
the correct answer.

1. Which type of force is shown in the illustration?

A. contact force
B. non-contact force
C. full force
D. half force

2. When a plastic balloon is inflated, it becomes bigger. What

does this mean? Blowing air inside the balloon can change
the ___________________.
A. size of an object
B. color of an object
C. shape of an object
D. texture of an object

3. How will you change the size of the precooked string beans?
A. Twist them. C. Cut them.
B. Press them. D. Crumple them.

4. You want to bake banana cake for afternoon snack. What

forces will you apply to the bananas before mixing with the
flour?
A. cut and smash C. cut and pound
B. cut and twist D. cut and break

5. Which picture shows the effect of force on the size and shape
of an empty can when rolled over by a heavy push cart?

A. B. C. D.

7
What else can I do?

A. Directions : Match the appropriate forces to change the size

and shape of the given materials. Write only the letter of the
correct answer.
A. B.
___1. Eggyolk A. digging
___2. Fish cracker B. beating
___3. Piece of wood C. cracking
___4. Excess water from clothes D. cutting
___5. Making a hole on the ground E. squeezing

B. Give at least three (3) possible applied forces to change the

size and shape of pieces of wood below to form them into toy car.
