TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today an additional series joining its popular
Starlet passenger car family.
The new Starlet-Turbo series includes five models, all mounting a newly developed 2E 12-valve
turbocharged engine. All these models go on sale nationwide today, January 8.
The Starlet-Turbo has been introduced to meet the trend toward higher performance cars. The
"two-mode turbo" allows the driver to choose, by means of a "turbo select switch," two different
pressure levels for the turbocharger depending on the road surface conditions and the preference
of the driver. The Starlet-Turbo also has a 4-speed automatic transmission with two-way overdrive.

○ Main Features of the Starlet-Turbo:

1. Newly developed 2E 12-valve turbo engine

The 2E 12-valve turbo (1,295cc 2E-TELU) has been developed from the 2E 12-Valve EFI base
engine (1,295cc 2E-ELU), which, although compact and lightweight, combines high power output
with low fuel consumption. The base engine has been upgraded by Toyota's own water-cooled
turbocharger and an air-cooled intercooler. The intercooler improves the engine's air-intake
efficiency by cooling the turbocharged air. At the same time, alterations have been made in the
shape of the combustion chamber and the main air-intake port. All these improvements have
resulted in the engine's outstanding performance: maximum power output of 105 ps and
maximum torque of 15.2 kg-m (net). This is combined with its low 10-mode fuel consumption rate
of 17.0 km/1 (with 5-speed manual transmission, Ministry of Transport values).

2. "Two-mode turbo system"

The 2E 12-valve turbo is provided with the "two-mode turbo system." In this system, when the
"turbo select switch" is set at "low mode," the computer opens the waste valve at a lower pressure
than in the "normal mode," releasing some of the exhaust gases via the by-pass. This lessens the
volume of the exhaust gas which turns the turbine, which in turn lowers the pressure of the intake
air for the engine. The lower pressure prevents sudden surges in torque and helps make driving
safer on rough or snow- and ice-covered roads. It also improves fuel economy by eliminating
excess power when it is not needed.

During operation in the low mode, maximum power output is 91 ps and maximum torque 13.4 kg-m.

3. Knock-control system
The knock-control system ensures optimum ignition timing in all driving situations and effectively
combines high power output of the turbocharger with low fuel consumption.

4. Four-speed automatic transmission with two-way overdrive

The 4-speed automatic transmission with two-way overdrive has been specially developed as a
brand-new addition to the Starlet family, and is intended to meet diversified needs in the
marketplace.

5. Refined appearance and interior

The air scoop, which supplies air to the air-cooled intercooler, is a distinctive feature of the bonnet
hood.
The front grill, large bumper and rear roof spoiler have all been designed exclusively for the
Starlet-Turbo. Together with the new turbo decal, they give the Starlet-Turbo an original, sporty
appearance. The interior's fresh and sporty feeling is enhanced by the leather -wrapped,
three-spoke steering wheel, the newly designed exclusive cloth for the seats and careful attention
to detail. For the comfort and convenience of the driver and passengers, the doors are fitted with
capacious pockets and ample armrests.

6. Improved handling and riding comfort

The standard tires for the Starlet-Turbo are 175/60R14 steel radials. The Starlet-Turbo
incorporates improvements to raise rigidity of the body and give the Starlet-Turbo better handling
stability and riding comfort in keeping with the high-performance engine. The rpm-sensitive power
steering makes the steering more responsive and reliable.
