IN THE SOCIETY

LESSON 8.1: FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATION IN SOCIETY


INTRODUCTION
The school as first and foremost a social institution that is an established organization and set of functions
meant to preserve and extend social order. His image is concerned with preserving our heritage and adapt to
social change and make change happen where it is needed. Education in its general sense is a form of learning in
which the knowledge skills and habits of group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through
teaching, training or research. (McNergney and Herbert (2001)
OBJECTIVE
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to be able to:
1. Analyze the functions of Education in society

TYPES OF EDUCATION:

FORMAL EDUCATION - it is an educational system comprising of chronological succession of grades


(elementary to college) hierarchical organization of personnel (teachers and administrators) with
organized study programs and a units and hours to be completed.

NON-FORMAL EDUCATION - it is sometimes referred to as quasi-formal system in the sense


that knowledge, skills and attitudes are acquired outside the formal school system.

FUNCTIONS OF SCHOOL
INTELLECTUAL - to basic cognitive skills, to transmit specific knowledge and to help
students to acquire HOTS.
POLITICAL - inculcate allegiance to the existing political order.
SOCIAL - to socialize children into various roles, behaviours and values of the society.
ECONOMIC - to prepare students for their later occupational roles and select train and allocate
individuals into the division of labor.

FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATION

1. TECHNICAL/ECONOMIC FUNCTION
- refers to the contributions of school to the technical or economic development and needs of the
individual, the society and the international community.
2. HUMAN/SOCIAL FUNCTION
- refer to contribution of schools to the human development and social relationships at different level of
the society. And also to help them develop potential as fully as possible.

3. POLITICAL FUNCTION
- the political development at different levels of society. To develop positive civic attitudes and skills to
exercise the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

4. CULTURAL FUNCTION
- the cultural transmission and development at different levels of society. To help students to develop
their creativity and aesthetic awareness to be socialized with successful norms, values and beliefs.

5. EDUCATIONAL FUNCTION
- the development and maintenance of education of the different levels of society.

6. MANIFEST FUNCTION
- it defined as the open and intended goals or consequences of activities within organization or
institution.

7. LATENT FUNCTION
- restricting some activities, matchmaking and production of social networks and creation of generation
gap.

A. Conservation Function - the school conserves and preserves through its libraries in the past
generations such as knowledge, inventions, Math, Science, History, Literature, Music and Arts.
B. Instruction Function - the main concern of the school to pass on the accumulated experiences of the
past generations to the incoming generations.
C. Research Function - the school conducts research to improve the old ways of doing things or to
discover the unknown facts or system to improve the quality of human life.
D. Social Service Function - to render some kind of social service in the place where it is located.

Six major Manifest function of education in society:


Socialization - teach students role, specific academic subjects and political socialization.
Social Control - schools are responsible for teaching values.
Social Placement - schools are responsible for identifying the most qualified people to fill
available positions in society.
Transmitting Culture - as social institution education performs a rather conservable
function-transmitting the dominant culture.
Promoting Social and Political Integration - education serves as latent function of
promoting political and social integration.
Agent of Change - can stimulate or bring about desired social change.

knowledge.

LESSON 8.2: Advantage and Disadvantage of Having Proper Education


INTRODUCTION
Education is a pillar of every country in the world. Through education, literacy levels go high and human
resources are enhanced. Because of the needs of the education sector most governments engage with NGOs in
meeting their needs. This makes the process sustainable, by bringing together all of the stakeholders including
then civil society. Among other things NGOs are sources of expertise in the education sector. Education takes
time. It takes money. It is undertaken by people who are not sure of their direction, who may therefore, be wasting
their time and money.

OBJECTIVE
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to be able to:
1. Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of having proper education.

ADVANTAGES / BENEFITS OF EDUCATION:

1. HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE - People with better education tend to live longer and have healthier
lifestyles. According to research, people with higher education have a one-third lower risk of heart
disease. Disease holders are also less likely to smoke and more likely to get regular exercise.

2. EXPERIMENTATION / DIVERSITY -A personal benefit to getting an education is the


opportunity to grow as an individual, experiment with what you are passionate about and find
yourself. You will be exposed to a diverse set of people and ideas which expand the mind.

3. SOCIALIZING NETWORKING - Education provides students with the space and the
opportunities to meet like-minded individuals either on peer or mentor basis.

4. PURSUING YOUR PASSION - When you feel passionate about something, you want to immerse
yourself in that topic. Education gives you the space to do so. In addition, you may find new
passionate or new areas of interest within your field of study.

5. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SKILLS - - students are required to go through many types


of assignments, discussion, courses and more during their time in education. Therefore, they
end up with wonderful skill set that translates into the workforce.

6. MORE EMPLOYMENT - Degree holders have access to more job . For graduates of bachelor’s
program or higher, the unemployment rate is cut in hall.

7. CAREER ENTRY AND ADVANCEMENT - College degrees prepare students for career, field.
Higher education gives the training and skills.
