Woman's Month Celebration

Woman's Month Celebration
If last February is called “love month”, the third month on the calendar is called “Women's
Month”. Women are recognized, honored and valued not only in the Philippines, but all over the
world. And when the 8th of March arrives, it is fun, colorful and meaningful to celebrate “International
Women’s Day”. The Philippines does not forget to join in this memorable celebration.
Before I begin, I'd like us all to engage in a little imaginative exercise today. Ready? I'd like
you to all close your eyes. Take a deep breath and try to visualize what I'm saying.
Consider yourself in a long, dark corridor. You can see a door in the distance but you have to squint
your eyes. Outside the door, there is light. Normally, you’d want to reach out to that door and walk
out happily into the light. Now imagine your hands being tied, restricting your movement. And the
pathway leading to the door is peppered with shattered glass. And the ceiling is also made of glass
where you can look at your reflection and see someone tired of trying. Meanwhile, a whole group of
people pass by you, look at you, judge you, objectify you, and swiftly move towards the door
because their pathway is smooth.
And now, Open your eyes….Ladies and gentlemen, what you just imagined is what we call
being a woman. Welcome to our world.
The main reason for celebrating International Women’s Day is to respect the rights and
achievements of women in all countries in the past. It also originally aimed to achieve full gender
equality around the world. It is also “a time to reflect on the progress made, call for change and
celebrate the acts of courage and determination of ordinary women who have played an
extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities”. Most importantly, International
Women’s Day gives us an opportunity to consider the position of women in today’s world. Although
International Women’s Day originated with the goal of eliminating discrimination against women, this
goal has not yet been achieved.
As the world grows bigger, the injustices women face every day keeps on increasing as well.
Women are constantly battling for their rights and power in a world where they have to work twice as
hard than men to get the same results. In this world where women are labelled as weak, ignorant
and constantly objectified. We now live in the 21st century. It is time to break the patriarchy and give
women the chance to rule. Women are powerful.
With this celebration, we were given the chance to raise awareness for the inequality women
keep on experiencing. Through this, we will continuously support and raise our voice for women who
are silently struggling from their own insecurities. As we keep on fighting these battles, remember
that Alessia Cara once said " You don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart".
"BABAE TAYO, HINDI BABAE LANG" don't let their words frighten you, instead fight back with
success. Bigyan po natin ng boses ang mga kababaihan para sa pagbabago tungo sa kaunlaran.
We are living in the 21st century. There is not a single shred of doubt in the fact that a woman
can become and conquer anything that she desires. History tells us, however, that this has been a
result of an unbearably long journey of revolts and movements against a society that was designed
to put women down, to undermine them. Where the only criteria to determine their worth was how
pretty they are or how well they cook and clean. Patriarchy is so deeply rooted in the fabric of so
many countries that there are still people who continue to follow those notions about women. And for
them, I have one word: Ignorant. Yes, they are ignorant to the grave consequences of perpetuating
gender parity, ignorant to the fact that women are just as human as men, ignorant to all the
possibilities a woman if given, can emerge gloriously from. Let me reiterate to you people today,
WOMEN BELONG TO THE WORLD, NOT INSIDE KITCHENS. The rise of women does NOT
equate to the fall of men.
In Proverbs 3:15 it says, “She is more precious than jewels and nothing you desire can
compare with her.” Women are valuable than the most precious things we can see. They possess
not just because of beauty but also great wisdom, strength and competence. We need to
acknowledge their abilities at all levels of our society because they have the power to change and
reshape the future. To all women, as Hillary Clinton said, “never doubt that you are valuable and
powerful, and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your
own dreams.”
Happy Women’s Day!
