Unit 6 Lesson 21 Student Worksheet

This document provides information about calculating the volumes of various three-dimensional shapes such as rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, rectangular pyramids, and triangular pyramids. It gives the formulas for finding the volume of a triangular prism (V = 1/2 * b * l * h) and a pyramid (V = 1/3 * B * h), where B is the area of the base and h is the height. It then works through examples of using these formulas to calculate the volumes of a triangular prism carton and a square pyramid paperweight.

Use the math you already know to solve the problem.

This figure is a right triangular prism. Imagine two prisms attached together like this:

Describe the composed figure.

What are the dimensions of the composed figure?

What is the volume of the composed figure?

How could you find the volume of the triangular prism you started with? Explain.

Find Out More

A right prism is a solid that has two faces (called bases) that are polygons. The bases of a
right prism are the same size and shape and parallel to each other. The other faces are
rectangles and are perpendicular to the bases. Prisms are named by their bases.

To find the volume of the triangular prism on the previous page, you multiplied the three
dimensions of the rectangular prism and took half, or divided the product by 2.

So, the formula for the volume of a triangular prism is  1  lwh or 1  1  lw 2( h). The expression  1  lw

represents the area of the triangle, the base of the prism.

To find the volume of a right triangular prism, find the area of the
triangular base, the number of cubes in one layer, and multiply
by the height, the number of layers.
B 5 area of the base
A right pyramid is a three-dimensional figure whose base is a V 5 Bh
polygon and whose other faces are triangles that all meet at a vertex.
A rectangular pyramid has a rectangular base and four triangular faces.
A triangular pyramid has a triangular base.

You can see that the volume of a pyramid is less vertex

than the volume of a right prism with the same
base and height. You can find the volume of a
pyramid with the formula V =  1  Bh.
