Public Trust (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023
• Recently, the Public Trust (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023 was passed and the objective of
this bill is to increase ease of living and doing business.
• The Bill proposes to decriminalize 183 provisions in 42 Central Acts administered by 19
ministries/departments, covering various areas such as environment, agriculture, media,
industry, trade, information technology, copyright, motor vehicles, cinematography, food safety
etc. Are included.
• The main objective of this bill is to decriminalize such minor offenses which do not pose any
threat to public interest or national security and to provide for civil penalties or administrative
action in their place.

Dongria Kondh Tribe


• The Dongria Kondh tribe living in the Niyamgiri hills of Odisha are facing potential threats due
to proposed amendments to the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, raising concerns over the
protection of their ancestral lands and cultural identity.
• The Dongria Kondh tribe is one of the 13 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) in
Odisha, India.
• The proposed Forest Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 seeks to change the definition of
'forest' set by the Supreme Court of India in 1996.
• According to the amendment, the Forest Conservation Act of 2023 will be applicable only to
'forest' areas notified under the Indian Forest Act, 1927 and as per government records since
October 25, 1980.
• About 95% of the land in Niyamgiri is not classified as 'forest' in government records. The
amendment could potentially open a window to transfer land not classified as 'forest' in
government records for other purposes, which could impact the Niyamgiri hill range and other
forest areas in Odisha.

• In a thrilling women's compound singles shooting competition, Avneet Kaur won the gold medal

World Breastfeeding Week 2023


• ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ is celebrated every year to emphasize regular breastfeeding for
children. This year Breastfeeding Week starts on 1st August and ends on 7th August.

• The World Breastfeeding Week campaign is addressed to the World Health Organization,
UNICEF and several health ministries and civil society partners.
• This year’s theme is “Let’s make breastfeeding and work, work!”

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been honored with the 'Lokmanya Tilak National Award' for
his remarkable contribution to the progress of the country. He was given this award in a ceremony
organized in ‘Pune’.
• Apoorva Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released the book ‘Yojana
Classic’ at the stall of the Publications Division in the ongoing Delhi Book Fair-2023 (27th edition)
at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. It contains a collection of selected articles of the magazine ‘Yojana’
published since 1957.
• With the passage of 'Biodiversity Amendment Bill-2023' in the Rajya Sabha, the bill has been passed
by the Parliament. The objective of the Bill is to promote research on medicinal plants, encourage
production of plant based medicines and provide benefits to local persons involved in forest
produce.
• The Reserve Bank of India has allayed concerns over the validity of currency notes bearing the star
(*) symbol, saying that banknotes bearing the star (*) symbols on the number panel are completely
authentic and have the same value as any other legal tender. RBI said that this star (*) mark is
placed on the number panel of the note, which is an identifier indicating that the note has been
replaced by a printing mistake in a packet of 100 pieces of sequentially numbered banknotes.
• Recently, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in collaboration with
National Payments Corporation of India launched ‘MSME RuPay Credit Card’ on a pilot basis
across India for enterprise registered MSMEs.
• Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the premier telecom R&D center of the
Department of Telecommunications (DOT), has signed a consortium agreement with industry
partners for 'Collaborative Development of End-to-end Solutions for 5G Radio Access Network' .
• Major General ‘Amita Rani’ took charge as Additional Director General in the Military Nursing
Service (MNS) on August 1, 2023.
• Recently, a forest fire in Washington, United States, initially named 'Lone Pine Creek', has crossed
the border into the Canadian province of British Columbia. It has been named 'Eagle Bluff'.
• Recently, the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, during a written reply in the
Rajya Sabha, said that the annual allocation under the 'Members of Parliament Local Area
Development Scheme' (MPLADS) (introduced in December 1993) has remained unchanged since
the financial year 2011-12.
• Five years ago, scientists discovered and revived two frozen organisms, microscopic nematodes, in
Siberia. This study provides valuable insight into the incredible phenomenon of ‘cryptobiosis’.
Cryptobiosis is a state of extreme dormancy in response to adverse environmental conditions.
• James Ferguson 'Jim' Scaia has been elected as the new chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC), defeating United States Vice President Thelma Krug in a run-off.
• Renowned space-tech startup ‘Pixel’, backed by renowned entities like Google, Blume Ventures,
and Omnivore VC, has been awarded a significant grant from iDEX (Innovations for Defense
Excellence) set up by the Indian Defense Ministry.
• Scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Niigata University of Japan have made an
amazing discovery by finding water drops in stones from the Himalayas. These water droplets are
believed to have come from an ancient sea that existed about 600 million years ago.
• World Ranger Day is celebrated on 31 July. The theme of World Ranger Day 2023 is “30 by 30”,
based on momentum from the 2022 United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity (COP15).

List of missing women in India
• Among all the states, ‘Maharashtra’ tops the list with the highest number of missing women with
a reported number of 56,498 in the year 2021.
• The Union Home Ministry has informed the Parliament that between 2019 and 2021, that is,
within three years, more than 13 lakh 13 thousand girls and women have gone missing in the
country.
• According to National Crime Records Bureau data, in 2021, a total of 375,058 women (above 18
years) were reported missing in India.
• Additionally, 90,113 girls (under the age of 18) were also reported missing in India during the
same year.
• Madhya Pradesh was second in terms of number of missing women with 55,704 cases. West
Bengal reported 50,998 women missing, while Odisha reported 29,582 cases in the same year.

• The meeting of the Consultative Committee of Members of Parliament associated with the
Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was held in New Delhi. During the
meeting, India's significant achievement in the 75th year of independence was highlighted by
declaring 75 wetlands in the Ramsar Convention's list of wetlands of international importance.
• The network of Indian Ramsar sites covers approximately 1.33 million hectares, more than 8%
of the country's known wetland extent, the second largest in Asia and fifth in the world in terms
of total number of designated Ramsar sites.

Svamitva Yojana
• The pilot phase of ‘Svamitva Yojana’ was launched on 24 April 2020 for implementation from
2020-21. This scheme was launched at the national level on April 24, 2021.
• The ownership scheme is being implemented with the cooperation of the Ministry of Panchayati
Raj, State Revenue Department, State Panchayati Raj Department and Survey of India.
• By July 26, 2023, drone flying work had been completed under the SVAMITVA scheme in
2,70,924 villages of the country.
• It is the responsibility of the concerned State Government to prepare and distribute property
cards on the basis of maps prepared under the Swamitva Scheme by the Survey of India.
• By July 26, 2023, property cards had been prepared in 89,749 villages.

CRISIL Corporate Banking Ranking


• A list of Coalition Greenwich (a division of CRISIL) Share & Quality Leaders and Greenwich
Excellence Awards 2023 was released in which HDFC Bank (among the Local Banks in India) has
been ranked top in 3 categories of the Share & Quality Leaders Awards list. Has left behind State
Bank of India (SBI) as a bank.
• The list is a part of the study ‘Indian Corporates Turn to Big Banks to Fund Ambitious Growth
– 2023 Greenwich Leaders: Indian Corporate Banking’.
• In the Greenwich Share Leaders 2023 (Large Corporate) list, HDFC Bank has overtaken State
Bank of India (SBI) to top the Indian Large Corporate Banking Market Penetration – Local Banks
list.
• ICICI Bank topped the Indian Large Corporate Banking Quality – Local Banks and emerged as
the only designation for Greenwich Quality Leader 2023 (Large Corporate).
• In the Greenwich Share Leaders 2023 (Middle Market) list, HDFC Bank has again topped the
Indian Middle Market Banking Market Penetration (Local Banks) list.

• HDFC Bank shared the top position with ICICI Bank in the ‘Indian Middle Market Banking
Quality – Local Banks’ category under the Greenwich Quality Leaders 2023 (Middle Market).

Resource Efficiency Circular Economy Industry Coalition (RECEIC)


• Along with India's G20 Presidency, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav launched the Resource
Efficiency Circular Economy Industry Coalition (RECEIC) in Chennai.
• The Coalition aims to promote the practice of resource efficiency and circular economy across
the world by connecting companies from different sectors and countries.
• RECEIC consists of 39 companies headquartered in 11 different countries, representing a wide
variety of businesses.

• President Draupadi Murmu will inaugurate the national festival of India's folk and tribal
expressions "Utkarsh" and the international literary festival "Unmesh" in Bhopal. The Culture
Department, along with the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Sahitya Akademi of the Culture Ministry,
is organizing this program in Madhya Pradesh from 3rd to 5th August.
• The government will launch 'e-Care Portal' to simplify the process of repatriating the mortal
remains of Indians who lost their lives abroad.
• The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has developed an application ‘MASI –
Monitoring App for Seamless Inspection’ monitoring app for real-time monitoring of Child Care
Institutions (CCIs) and their inspection mechanisms across the country.
• After the 51st meeting of the GST Council in New Delhi, Smt. Sitharaman said that 28 percent GST
on online gaming and casinos can be implemented from October 1.
• Telangana Police has traced two thousand six hundred and 17 missing children, including two
hundred and sixty-three girls, during 'Operation Muskaan-9' conducted across the state in the
month of July.
• After receiving a grant of ₹10 crore from NITI Aayog, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean
Studies (KUFOS) will set up India's first Atal Incubation Center (AIC) in fisheries.
• Bharat Dynamics Limited has handed over the next generation weapon system – the first Radio
Frequency Seeker of Akash – to the Defense Research and Development Organisation,
manufactured at its newly commissioned world-class Sikar facility.
• ‘G20 Ministerial Conference on Women Empowerment’ was inaugurated in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
• The G-20 Empower Summit was inaugurated in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Earlier, the initial meeting
was held in Agra, Uttar Pradesh on 11 and 12 February 2023 and the second meeting was held in
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on 05 and 06 April 2023.
• Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on July 30 inaugurated the ‘Chief Minister Command Centre’ and
‘CM Dashboard’ at Lal Bahadur Shastri Bhawan (Annex) in Lucknow, which aims to ensure the
benefits of government schemes and services to the needy and deserving people.
• Amazon India has inaugurated its first floating store on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir.
• National Assessment and Accreditation Authority (NAAC) recently appointed Professor Ganesan
Kannabiran as the new director. NAAC is an autonomous organization established by the UGC of
India. It was established in the year 1994 with the aim of evaluating and authorizing institutions of
higher education in the country.
• Shivendra Nath, a 1994-batch UPSC officer, has been selected by the 'Public Enterprises Selection
Board' to take up the role of Chairman and Managing Director in the public sector undertaking
(PSU) 'Engineering Projects India Limited'.
• The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced the setting up of the Corporate
Debt Market Development Fund (CDMDF). The fund, regulated by SEBI, is designed to act as a

'backstop facility', providing support during stressed market conditions by purchasing investment-
grade corporate debt securities.
• 'Markarian 421' which is a 'supermassive black hole' located about 400 million light years away

• Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society has for the first time signed an MoU with the All
India Football Federation to promote football at the grassroots level. The Subroto Mukherjee
Sports Education Society has been organizing the Subroto Cup international football tournament
since 1960.
• ‘Iga Swiatek’ achieved a significant feat by clinching her fourth WTA title of the year. The Polish
tennis player defeated Germany's Laura Siegemund in the final.
• England pacer Stuart Broad has announced his retirement from cricket.

PM JI-VAN Scheme
• The government had notified the “Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN (Biofuel-Environment Friendly Crop
Residue Prevention) Scheme” in March, 2019.
• The scheme is to provide financial assistance to integrated bio-ethanol projects for setting up
second generation ethanol projects in the country.
• These projects are to use lignocellulosic biomass and other renewable feedstock. The total
financial outlay of the scheme is Rs 1969.50 crore for the period 2018-19 to 2023-24.
• Under this scheme, maximum financial assistance has been fixed at Rs 150 crore per project for
commercial projects and Rs 15 crore per project for demonstration projects.
• Under the scheme, public and private sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) will be eligible
for six commercial second generation (2G) bio-ethanol projects in Punjab, Haryana, Odisha,
Assam and Karnataka and one demonstration 2G ethanol project each in Haryana and Andhra.

National Capital Territory of Delhi-Amendment Bill-2023


• Lok Sabha has passed the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Amendment Bill-
2023. This bill proposes to amend the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act
1991.
• This Bill empowers the Central Government to make rules for the functions, tenure and other
conditions of service of officers and employees of the Government of National Capital Territory
of Delhi.
• There is also a provision in this bill for the formation of 'National Capital Public Service
Authority'. This authority will include the Chief Minister of Delhi, Chief Secretary of Delhi and
Principal Home Secretary of Delhi.
• This authority will give recommendations to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi regarding
transfer, appointment and disciplinary action of officers.

• The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a significant step towards improving
the experience of highway users with the launch of citizen-centric integrated mobile application
'RajmargYatra'.
• Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar jointly launched
'Study in India Portal' in New Delhi. This portal is a one-stop platform that will ease the education
of foreign students in India.

• ‘Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises’ had launched ‘Udyam Registration Portal’ on
01.07.2020 to register and classify enterprises as Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
• Indian Naval ships ‘INS Sahyadri’ and ‘INS Kolkata’ deployed in the Eastern IOR arrived at Port
Moresby on 02 Aug 23 to deepen maritime partnership and cooperation with Papua New Guinea.
• The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has notified the creation of a new category of
AYUSH (AY) visa for foreign nationals for the purpose of treatment under AYUSH systems of
treatment/Indian systems of medicine.
• The Center has banned the import of laptops, tablets and personal computers with immediate
effect. The government said in a notification that import of these goods will be allowed only on
valid licenses for restricted imports.
• The government has asked pharmaceutical companies to adopt best practices for manufacturing
quality medicines. ‘Good Manufacturing Practice’ is a mandatory standard which ensures the
quality of products. Under this, the materials used, manufacturing methods, machines and
processes are regulated. The Union Health Ministry has given six months to pharmaceutical
companies with a turnover of more than Rs 250 crore and 12 months to companies with a turnover
of less than Rs 250 crore to adopt GMP.
• India is going to organize the '5th World Coffee Conference' (WCC) in Bengaluru from September
25 to 28, where it will showcase its diverse coffees to buyers coming from different countries. The
main theme of the conference will be “Sustainability through Circular Economy and Regenerative
Agriculture”.
• A team led by Indian-origin South African doctor 'Reza Miah' has been awarded the National
Award for its project to build an aircraft that can take off and land from its own location without a
runway.
• London-based Indian-origin writer Chetna Maru's first novel 'Western Lane' has been included in
the 2023 Booker Prize longlist.
• Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwanese company and a key supplier to Apple Inc, has promised
to invest ₹1,600 crore to set up a manufacturing facility in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
• The government has extended the tenure of Cabinet Secretary 'Rajiv Gaba' for one more year. Shri
Gaba's tenure on this post has been extended for the third time.
• In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Development of North
Eastern Region G. Kishan Reddy said that between 1976 and 2023, 251 ancient art objects have been
brought back to the country from abroad. Of these, 238 items have been brought back after 2014.
• Asia's oldest football tournament 'Durand Cup' started. These matches will be played at four
venues in Assam and West Bengal, these venues include Guwahati, Kokrajhar and Kolkata.
• According to an RBI index measuring the adoption of online transactions, digital payments across
the country are expected to register a growth of 13.24 percent over a year till March 2023.
• F1 champion Max Verstappen won the 'Belgian Grand Prix' spectacularly and
• Nadaar became the 10th winner of the season and the eighth of the season.
• 'Muslim Women's Rights Day' is celebrated across the country on 1 August to celebrate the
enactment of the law against triple talaq. The central government had enacted a law on August 1,
2019, which criminalized the practice of triple talaq.
• ‘World Lung Cancer Day’ is celebrated every year on 1 August.
• World Wide Web Day is celebrated every year on 1 August. The Internet started in 1989.
• Well-known Marathi poet and lyricist Namdev Mahanor passed away in Pune, Maharashtra after a
prolonged illness. He was also a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
• Vakkom Purushothaman, who was twice Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, passed away
at the age of 96.

Geographical Indication Tag
• Geographical Indications Registry headquartered at Chennai (Tamil Nadu) under the
Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DIPIT), Ministry of Commerce and
Industry (MoCI) has granted Geographical Indications (GI) tags to 7 new products from 3 states
– of which 4 are from Rajasthan, 2 from Goa and 1 from Uttar Pradesh (UP).

• Rajasthan - Udaipur Koftgari Metal Craft, Bikaner Kashidakari Craft, Bikaner Usta Art Craft,
Jodhpur Bandhej Craft - All Handicrafts
• Goa - Goa Mankur mango (Malcorado or Mancurad), Goa Bebinca - agricultural products and
food items respectively.
• Uttar Pradesh - Jalesar Metal Craft - Handicrafts

Free Movement Regime (FMR)


• In the year 2018, as part of the Act East policy by the Narendra Modi government, the Free
Movement Regime (FMR) was established to facilitate visa-free migration for tribes living along
the India-Myanmar border.
• The primary objective of the FMR is to encourage people-to-people contacts and enable tribes
living along the India-Myanmar border to travel up to 16 kilometers within each other's
territories without visas.
• While the FMR was intended to promote harmonious relations, it inadvertently gave rise to
concerns over illegal immigration. The Manipur government identified 2,187 illegal immigrants,
raising questions over security and possible ethnic tensions.

Rajasthan approves formation and demarcation of 19 new districts and three divisions
• The Rajasthan Cabinet has approved the formation and demarcation of 19 new districts and three
divisions. Notification of these districts will be issued soon.
• There are currently 33 districts in the state. These also include Jaipur and Jodhpur districts,
which have now been divided into rural and urban districts. Now the number of districts in the
state will increase to 50.
• The proposal to create new divisions of Pali, Banswara and Sikar has also been approved. With
this there will now be 10 divisions in the state.

Great Nicobar Island Project


• Earlier, 8.5 lakh trees were estimated to be cut for the government's 'Great Nicobar Island
Project', but now it is expected that 9.64 lakh trees may be cut for this, which is much more than
the earlier estimate. Is.
• The issue of deforestation is facing challenges from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) given
the environmental impacts of this project.
• This project is a major project to be implemented on the southern tip of Andaman and Nicobar
Islands.
• The project includes an international container transshipment terminal, a greenfield
international airport, township development and setting up of 450 MVA gas and solar based
power plants over an area of 16,610 hectares in the island.

Western Tragopan
• The state bird of Himachal Pradesh, the 'Western Tragopan', has suffered habitat loss, but
conservation efforts have seen the Sarahan Pheasantry population gradually increase.

• The western tragopan, also known as the horned western tragopan, is the rarest of all living
pheasants.
• Due to its beautiful feathers and large size this bird is locally called 'Jujurana' or 'King of Birds'.
• It is endemic to the northwestern Himalayas, northern Pakistan through Jammu and Kashmir
and Himachal Pradesh to the western part of Garhwal.
• They eat mostly leaves, shoots and seeds as well as insects and other invertebrates.

Iberian Wolf
• According to a recently published report of data for the year 2020 through the Action Program
for the Conservation of the 'Iberian Wolves' run by the Government of Andalusia (Spain), there
is no evidence of the presence of Iberian wolves in Andalusia (a Spanish autonomous region).
• The Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) is a species of gray wolf originally found in the Iberian
Peninsula of Spain and Portugal. As of 2020, this species is extinct in the historical region of
Andalusia, Spain.
• The gray wolf Canis lupus is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

• The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) recently conducted a comprehensive analysis of
the assets of MLAs from various political parties in India.
• The report highlights the average wealth of MLAs, the percentage of billionaire MLAs and the
representation of women in state legislatures.
• 'Karnataka' has emerged as the state with the highest average wealth per MLA and the most
number of billionaire MLAs, while 'Uttar Pradesh' lags behind in both the categories.
• According to the ADR report, the average wealth of an MLA in India is Rs 13.63 crore.
• Among the states analyzed, 'Karnataka' tops the list with 223 MLAs whose average assets are Rs
64.39 crore.

• China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has been a major driver of the country's efforts to
cooperate with Southeast and South Asian countries, including Nepal.
• As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of BRI, China has launched several new projects
under the platform called 'Silk Roadster'.
• China's BRI, also known as One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative, is an ambitious global
infrastructure development and investment strategy.
• Launched in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the initiative aims to connect Asia with Europe

The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023
• The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was
introduced in the Lok Sabha on July 26, aimed at including four communities in the Scheduled
Tribe (ST) list in Jammu and Kashmir.
• The bill has a provision to include four communities in the ST list – Gadda Brahmins, Koli,
Paddari tribe and Pahari ethnic group.

132nd ‘Durand Cup’


• The 132nd edition of the ‘Durand Cup’ started on August 05, 2023 in Kokrajhar, Assam.
• Defense Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the event, marking the grand start of the

Redevelopment of 508 railway stations
• In a historic step, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for
redevelopment of 508 railway stations across the country through video conferencing.
• These 508 stations, redeveloped at a cost of more than Rs 24,470 crore, are spread across 27
states and union territories.
• These include 55 in Uttar Pradesh, 55 in Rajasthan, 49 in Bihar, 44 in Maharashtra, 37 in West
Bengal, 34 in Madhya Pradesh, 32 in Assam, 25 in Odisha, 22 in Punjab, 21 in Gujarat, 21 in
Telangana, 21 in Jharkhand. These include 20 stations, 18 in Andhra Pradesh, 18 in Tamil Nadu,
15 in Haryana and 13 in Karnataka.

Naya Savera Yojana


• More than 1.19 lakh beneficiaries have been benefited so far since the inception of Naya Savera
Yojana ('Free Coaching and Allied' Scheme). Out of which 12,155 beneficiaries were from Andhra
Pradesh state.
• The scheme was implemented across the country through empaneled Project Implementing
Agencies (PIAs). It was discontinued in 2022-23.

Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill 2023
• ‘Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill-2023’ has been passed in
the Parliament. This bill has a provision for amendment in the 'Government of National Capital
Territory of Delhi Act 1991'.
• It empowers the Central Government to make rules with respect to the affairs of the Government
of National Capital Territory of Delhi, including the functions, rules and other conditions of
service of officers.
• There is also a provision for the formation of 'National Capital Civil Services Authority'. This
authority will include the Chief Minister of Delhi, Chief Secretary of Delhi and Principal Home
Secretary of Delhi.
• The authority will make recommendations to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi regarding
matters of transfer and appointments of officers and disciplinary actions.

Paleo proxy
• Recently it was announced that a particular day in July 2023 was the hottest day in over 100,000
years, which is scientifically unfounded. This claim was based on temperature estimates from
before the invention of the thermometer, which rely on 'Palaeo proxies' and cannot provide daily
time-scale temperatures.
• Paleoproxies, short for paleoclimate proxies or paleoenvironmental proxies, are indicators or
records used by scientists to reconstruct past climate and environmental conditions.
• These proxies are typically derived from physical, biological, or chemical processes that respond
to changes in temperature or other climate factors.
• Since direct measurements of climate in the distant past are not possible, scientists rely on these
proxy records to understand past climate variations and long-term trends.

Henrietta Lacks: HeLa cells


• Recently, the family of 'Henrietta Lacks' has ended the lawsuit against a biotech company which
was accused of making profits from her cells without taking consent and this has brought a
revolution in the medical field.
• Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951 at the age
of 31. Without his knowledge or consent, doctors took a sample of his tumor and sent it to a
laboratory.
• In the laboratory it was discovered that their cells could grow indefinitely. Their cells, also known
as ‘HeLa cells’, became the first immortalized human cell line and are one of the most widely
used cells in biomedical research.
• ‘HeLa cells’ have contributed to many scientific breakthroughs such as polio vaccine
development, gene mapping, cancer treatment, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
research, cloning, stem cell studies and the COVID-19 vaccine.
• WHO had posthumously honored Henrietta Lacks with the WHO Director General’s Award on
October 13, 2021.

National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill 2023
• The ‘National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill 2023’ has received the approval of the
Parliament.
• There is a provision in the bill for the formation of 'National Nursing and Midwifery
Commission'. There will be 29 members in it.
• According to the Bill, every State Government will have to constitute a State Nursing and
Midwifery Commission where no such Commission exists under the State law.
• The Central Government will also establish a Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Council. The
Chairman of this Council will be the Chairman of the National Commission.

FISU World University Games 2023


• India finished seventh at the FISU World University Games 2023 with its best-ever haul of 26
medals – 11 gold, 5 silver and 10 bronze.
• The 31st edition of the World University Games was held in Chengdu, People's Republic of
China, from 28 July to 8 August.
• India, which has been a part of the World University Games since the inaugural edition held in
Turin in 1959, had won 20 medals - six gold, six silver and eight bronze - in the last 30 editions.
• India's previous best performance at the World University Games was in 'Gwangju 2015', where
Indian athletes won five medals - one gold, one silver and three bronze.
• Of the 26 medals won by India in Chengdu, 14 medals – eight gold, four silver and two bronze –
were won by the Indian shooting contingent.
• Host China topped the FISU World University Games medal tally with 178 medals, including 103
gold. Japan finished second with 21 gold medals out of 93 medals. The Republic of Korea finished
third with 17 gold medals out of a total of 58 medals.
• The next edition of the World University Games is scheduled to take place in Germany in 2025.

81st anniversary of ‘Quit India Movement’

• It serves as a global entity dedicated to promoting sustainable development within the Amazon

Operating System ‘Maya’
• In the ongoing war against cyber attacks, India's Defense Ministry has prepared an indigenous
operating system 'Maya'. Through this, the government aims to keep computers safe from cyber
attacks.
• Soon this indigenously developed operating system named ‘Maya OS’ will be installed in all the
computers of the Defense Ministry. This work is to be done by the end of this year.
• In such a situation, the new OS will replace 'Microsoft's Windows' and will soon be adopted by
the armed forces.
• Notably, a team of experts from various government agencies, including the Defense Research
and Development Organisation, Advanced Computing Development Center and National
Informatics Centre, developed Maya OS on the open-source Ubuntu platform in six months.

Second phase of ‘Nationwide Annual Drug Campaign’


• Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the second phase of the 'Nationwide Annual
Drug Campaign' for prevention of mosquito-borne filariasis in New Delhi.
• This campaign will be run in 81 districts of nine states. This includes Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh,
Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
• Shri Mandaviya said that the country is committed to eliminate ‘Lymphatic Filariasis’ by 2027 in

Havana syndrome
• To investigate 'Havana Syndrome' in India, a person from Bengaluru had filed a petition in
'Karnataka High Court' demanding an inquiry to prevent it in the country.
• Havana syndrome is a group of diseases that include dizziness, nausea, or blindness in one eye.
• Cases of this disease have been seen many times before in India and in 130 countries including
Tajikistan, Washington DC, Colombia and Austria.
• The first case of this disease was reported in the year 2016 from Havana, the capital of the
Caribbean.

‘Bhu-Vision’ soil testing platform


• Bhu-Vision (also known as Krishi-Rasta Soil Testing System) is a revolutionary IoT (Internet of
Things)-based automated soil testing and agronomy platform that has been recently launched in
India.
• It can test 12 main soil parameters in just 30 minutes using electrochemical sensors and
colorimetric methods.

• ‘Kachchativu’ is an uninhabited offshore island in the Palk Strait. The island is located between

• The ‘Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation’, Government of India, has taken an
important step by replacing the existing Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCES)
with a more comprehensive entity called the Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS).
• This ministry came into existence in the year 1999 after the merger of ‘Department of Statistics’
and ‘Department of Program Implementation’. It has two wings – Statistics Wing and Program

approved ‘PM Vishwakarma Yojana’ for a period of five years.
• Initially 18 traditional industries will be included under this scheme. These include carpenters,

RBI study on investment trends in India for financial year 2022-23


• A recent study by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) highlights the state-wise distribution of capital
investment in India during the financial year 2022-23.
• The study examines the geographical and regional trends that shape the project financing
landscape across the country.
• Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the leader with the highest share of 16.2% in the total cost of
projects sanctioned by banks and financial institutions. It is followed by Gujarat (14%), Odisha
(11.8%), Maharashtra (7.9%) and Karnataka (7.3%), showing dynamic distribution of investment.
• Kerala, Goa and Assam received the lowest shares, with Kerala receiving only 0.9% of the total
investment schemes.
• Haryana and West Bengal also come under 1% of total investment projects.

Yasuni National Park


• The people of Ecuador have expressed opposition to oil mining in the protected Amazon region,
which has remarkable biodiversity.
• More than 90% of the vote has rejected exploration for oil in the area located within the famous
Yasuni National Park, a global biodiversity hotspot.

• India successfully landed its Chandrayaan-3 mission on the lunar surface on August 23, 2023,
making it the fourth country to do so after the United States, Russia, and China.
• Chandrayaan-3's lander 'Vikram' successfully landed on the South Pole of the Moon. With this,
India has become the first country to reach the south pole of the Moon.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the Indian Space Research Organization for

current financial year.

Report of sixth census of minor irrigation schemes


• The Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of
Jal Shakti released the Sixth Census Report on Minor Irrigation Schemes.
• According to this report, 23.14 million minor irrigation (MI) schemes are reported in the
country, of which 21.93 million (94.8%) are groundwater and 1.21 million (5.2%) are surface
water schemes.
• Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of minor irrigation schemes in the country, followed by
Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
• The leading states in groundwater schemes are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh,
Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
• Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha and Jharkhand have the highest share in surface
water schemes.
• Ground water schemes include dug wells, shallow tube wells, medium tube wells and deep tube
wells. Surface water schemes include surface flow and surface lift schemes.

National Judicial Data Grid


• Recently the ‘National Judicial Data Grid’ drew attention to its important role in revolutionizing
the way judicial proceedings are managed in India.
• It is a database of orders, judgments and case details of 18,735 District and Subordinate Courts
and High Courts which has been set up as an online platform under the ‘e-Courts Project’.
• It provides data related to judicial proceedings/decisions of all computerized district and
subordinate courts in the country.

‘Ni-Kshay Mitra’ scheme
• As part of the Indian Air Force's endeavor to contribute to social causes that promote nation
building, the Air Force has committed its participation in the "Ni-Kshay Mitra" scheme.
• It is an initiative under the ‘Pradhan Mantri TB Free India Campaign’, implemented by the
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
• It aims to end TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target of 2030.
• “Ni-Kshaya Mitra” first expressed by the Honorable Prime Minister in the year 2018 is an
initiative that provides additional clinical, nutritional and vocational support to people
undergoing TB treatment by elected representatives, corporates, institutions, NGOs and
individuals.

• Cases of the disease caused by this rare virus have recently been seen in Alabama and New York,
which has had a serious impact on public health.
• This is a viral disease that causes swelling in the brain.
• It spreads to people and animals through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
• It was first identified in horses in the year 1831 in Massachusetts, United States.

Rare black eagle


• A rare black eagle has been seen for the first time in 'Chail Wildlife Sanctuary' located in Solan
district of Himachal Pradesh.
• This hawk belongs to the ‘Accipitridae’ family and is the only member of the ‘Ictinatus’ genus.
• They are found in the forests of the Eastern and Western Ghats in the Indian states of Himachal
Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in peninsular India.
• According to the IUCN, its conservation status is classified as 'least concern'.
• Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of animals, including rhesus macaques, leopards,
Indian muntjacs, gorals, porcupines, wild boars, langurs and Himalayan black bears.

Exercise Bright Star-23
• A contingent of the Indian Air Force departed to participate in the biennial multilateral tri-
service exercise ‘Bright Star-23’ to be held from 27 August to 16 September 2023 at Cairo (West)
Air Base, Egypt.
• The Indian Air Force is participating for the first time in this event which will also see
participation from air force contingents from the United States, Saudi Arabia, Greece and Qatar.
• The Indian Air Force contingent will include five MiG-29, two IL-78, two C-130 and two C-17
aircraft.

India Smart Cities Awards Contest (ISAC) 2022


• Indore has been declared the best smart city for doing the best work under the Smart City Project
of the Central Government.
• Along with Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Sagar got the highest number of awards in
their share. Therefore, Madhya Pradesh is also being given the award of best state in the country
under the Smart City Project.
• In October last year, Indore was chosen as India's cleanest city for the sixth consecutive time.

• Star javelin thrower 'Neeraj Chopra' has won the gold medal in the 'World Athletics
Championship 2023'. This championship took place in Budapest, Hungary.

Championship. Neeraj has become the first Indian to win gold in this category. Earlier, Anju

Nataraja statue
• A 28 feet bronze statue of Nataraja, considered the world's tallest, will be installed at the venue
of the 'G20 Summit' to be held in New Delhi.
• Weighing 19 tonnes, the Nataraja idol is made of eight metals, including gold, silver, lead,
copper, tin, mercury, iron and zinc (Ashtadhatu). It is being brought from 'Swamimalai' city of
Tamil Nadu.
• The idol depicts Nataraja (Lord Shiva) dancing. ‘Swamimalai’ is considered to be one of the six
sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, known as the Padai Veedugal (war camp) of Lord Murugan.
• The city is also famous for its Swamimalai Bronze Logo which has been granted Geographical
Indication/GI tag.
• The statue is made using the "lost-wax" casting technique of the Chola tradition, in which molten
bronze is poured into a clay mold.

Advisory Board on Banking and Financial Frauds (ABBFF)


• The Central Vigilance Commission has reconstituted the Advisory Board on Banking and
Financial Frauds (ABBFF) to strengthen investigation of bank fraud cases.
• ‘ABBFF’ acts as the first-tier trial body for bank fraud cases before they are referred to
investigating agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
• The reconstituted ABBFF Board consists of the Chairman and four other members, with the
Chairman and members holding office for a two-year term.
• The Central Vigilance Commission was established by the government in 1964 under The
decision was taken on the recommendations of the Anti-Corruption Committee headed by K.
Santhanam.
• Parliament had enacted the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003, providing statutory status

54th Tiger Reserve of India - Dholpur-Karauli
• The National Tiger Conservation Authority has approved the establishment of 'Dholpur-Karauli
Tiger Reserve' in Rajasthan. It is the 5th tiger reserve in Rajasthan after Mukundara Hills,
Ramgarh Vishdhari, Ranthambore and Sariska.
• As per the provisions of Section 38V of the ‘Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972’, tiger reserves are
notified by the State Governments on the advice of the National Tiger Conservation Authority.
• Currently there are a total of 54 tiger reserves in India (the most recent addition is the Dholpur-
Karauli Tiger Reserve).

"Self-respect" marriage
• Recently the Supreme Court has declared that not all marriages require a public declaration or
ceremony. The Court also approved a Tamil Nadu law that allows "self-respect" marriages.
• Section 7-A of the Hindu Marriage Act, implemented in Tamil Nadu through an amendment of
1967 in the state, provides legal recognition to self-respect or reformed marriages among Hindus.
• The main objective of the Self-Respect Movement started by E.V. Ramaswamy Naikar (Periyar)
in 1925 was to conduct marriages without Brahmin priests.

‘Kampala Declaration’ on Climate Change (KMDMECC)


• An important step has been taken by 48 African countries to adopt the ‘Kampala Ministerial
Declaration on Migration, Environment and Climate Change’ to address the interlinkages
between human mobility and climate change on the continent.
• The decision was discussed at a conference of states co-hosted by Kenya and Uganda. The
initiative was supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
• The KDMECC was originally signed by 15 African states in July 2022 in Kampala, Uganda.
• The KDMECC-AFRICA is expected to be signed by member states during the Africa Climate
Summit in Nairobi on September 4, 2023.

National referendum in Australia


• Australia has made full preparations to conduct a historic national referendum in October to
recognize the country's indigenous people in its constitution.
• More than 17 million registered voters across the country will vote on October 14 on an
amendment to the Constitution to establish a new advisory body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples.
• The approval of this historic referendum, called "Voice to Parliament", will recognize Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the country's Constitution.

Comic book "Let's Move Forward"


• Union Minister of Education & Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra
Pradhan launched a unique comic book titled ‘Let’s Move Forward’.
• This comic book is a collaborative effort between the National Council of Educational Research
and Training and UNESCO New Delhi.
• This marks a significant progress towards enhancing the goals of the School Health and Wellness
Program (SHWP).
• SHWP was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April, 2018 under the Ayushman
Bharat Abhiyan.

• He won gold medals at the Olympics for India in 1928, 1934 and 1936. He scored over 400 goals
in his career from 1926 to 1948.

• The Government of India honored him with the third highest civilian honor of the Padma

• 'Jayant Mahapatra', one of India's most famous English poets, passed away at the age of 95.

Fujiwara effect
• Hurricanes 'Idalia' and 'Franklin' moving near the southeastern US coast have raised concerns
about their possible interaction under the 'Fujiwara effect'.
• This phenomenon occurs when two cyclones come close to each other and engage in a rapid
“rotational dance”.
• Although these storms are not expected to collide, their close proximity has led to speculation
about five possibilities for the Fujiwara effect, including absorption, merger, or even the
formation of a supercyclone.
• The Fujiwhara effect can lead to unexpected intensification, altered trajectories, and increased
rainfall, as has been seen in previous interactions between cyclones.

World Sanskrit Day


• World Sanskrit Day is celebrated every year on Shravan Purnima. In 2023, it was celebrated on
31 August.
• It is celebrated as a tribute to the birth anniversary of ‘Panini’, an eminent Sanskrit scholar and
grammarian.
• It is also the oldest language of India, and almost all the Vedas and Puranas are written in
Sanskrit.
• World Sanskrit Day was first celebrated in 1969.
• Sanskrit is one of the 22 official languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian
Constitution. It also includes 6 classical languages apart from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada,
Malayalam and Oriya.
• In the year 2010, Sanskrit was declared as the second official language of Uttarakhand. In Mattur
village of Karnataka, everyone uses Sanskrit language colloquially.
