ACTIVITY 2: VOCABULARY
ANNOUNCEMENT
Announcement is one of the short functional texts. In English verb of announce had a meaning
“make a formal public declaration about a fact, occurrence, or intention.” Thus, Announcement is
an official notification about something, whether written or spoken which presented to the
public. Moreover, the social function of the text is to make a formal written notice of certain
events this has happened or going to happen.
• Opening is stating the purpose of the announcement. The text contains what event will be
held.
• Content is stating Day and Date and Stating Place. The text contains when and where event
will be held.
• Closing is Informing Sender of the announcement. The text contains name of the person who
will be contacted to get the further information.
• Conjunction
A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.
Conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, because, etc.
Example:
For more information, please contact our English teacher Miss Nana or Mr. Indra.
• Preposition
A preposition is a word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a
sentence. Prepositions are usually short words, and they are normally placed directly in front
of nouns. In some cases, you’ll find prepositions in front of gerund verbs. Some preposition are
commonly used in announcement text are on, in and at. On is used to express day, date and
month, In is used to express location, and At is used to express hour.

The students have to collect the paper in my office on Friday at 2 p.m. on December 1, 2018.

To all of the twelfth grade students, we are approaching the end of our days at SMK Negeri 1
Negara. Soon, we will leave this lovely school. Let's leave something memorable for the school
and for the students in need. Do not ruin your uniforms by spraying them with paint. Do not

Derivation is the word formation process in which a derivational affix attaches to the base form of
a word to create a new word. Affixes, which include prefixes and suffixes, are bound morphemes.
Morphemes are the smallest linguistic unit of a language with semantic meaning. Bound
morphemes, unlike free morphemes, cannot stand alone but must attach to another morpheme
such as a word. For example, the following two lists provide examples of some common suffixes
with definitions in English:

Announcement
We are sorry to inform that the bazaar event (February 23, 2018) has been cancelled. After a day
of discussion between the teachers and the committees, the event had to be cancelled due the
bad weather in our region. We are extremely upset about this decision, but this cancelation is
good for us all. We are terribly sorry to all students who helped us, and who had stalls at the
event.
Thank you for your support. We hope we can work together again in different event.

Look at the bolded words! Those nouns come from “discuss, decide, and cancel”. Those nouns
are called derivation nouns. A derivation noun derive from a verb from, you can take certain
suffixes “-tion, -sion, -ance, and others”, add them to verbs, and produce derivative nouns. A
suffix normally marks a word as an adjective, verb or noun. A suffix is placed at the end of the
word.
