INTRODUCTION

Every day at school, we always hear spoken announcement from our


teacher, headmaster, or the member of students’ organization. We also can
read announcements on the notice board. Moreover, both of spoken
announcement and written announcement have similar function, which is to
give information to the public. Thus, in this module we are going to discuss
about announcements in our daily school activities.

ACTIVITY 1: WHISPER GAME

1. Make a group of nine and make a line.


2. The first student read a brief announcement prepared by the
teacher.
3. The first student whispers the announcement to the second
student.
4. The second student also whispers it to the third and do it all until
the last student.
5. The last student tells loudly what he/she has heard.
6. If the announcement is true, the team wins.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Announcement is one of the short functional texts. In English verb of announce had a meaning
“make a formal public declaration about a fact, occurrence, or intention.” Thus, Announcement is
an official notification about something, whether written or spoken which presented to the
public. Moreover, the social function of the text is to make a formal written notice of certain
events this has happened or going to happen.

Written Announcement
English Speech Contest
For all students of SMK Negeri 1 Negara, we announced English Speech Contest will be held on
Tuesday, April 17, 2018 in the Hall of SMK Negeri 1 Negara. All of the classes have to choose one
of their members as the representative of the class to join the contest. The issue of the contest is
“The Importance of English for Our Future.” For more information, visit the committee’s English
Speech Contest in OSIS room. Thank you.

“We will discuss and practice to make a narrative text so all of you should bring a dictionary in
next English lesson. No excuse to student who don’t bring the dictionary because it helps you in

Kind of Announcement Texts


There are so many kinds of announcement text, such
as:
• Announcement of missing people,
• Obituary,
• News of marriages,
• Birthdays, inaugurations and births,
• Winner announcement,
• Job vacancy,
• Advertisement,
• Activity / event report, and
• Notice / appeal from the government.

Generic Structure of Announcement


The structure of announcement consists of opening, contents and closing.

Celebrating 44th anniversary of SMK NEGERI 1 NEGARA, we Opening


will hold an English Contest.
Day : Thursday
Date: August 2, 2018
Time: 08.00 – 12.00 a.m. Content
Each class must participate in the following contest:

• Opening is stating the purpose of the announcement. The text contains what event will be
held.
• Content is stating Day and Date and Stating Place. The text contains when and where event
will be held.
• Closing is Informing Sender of the announcement. The text contains name of the person who
will be contacted to get the further information.

Language Features of Announcement


• Simple Present Tense
The simple present tense is one of several forms of present tense in English. It is used to
describe present situations, fixed arrangements, and instructions or directions. The simple
present tense is simple to form. Just use the base form of the verb:
• Subject (I, You, We, They) + Infinitive (Verb I)
Example:
We hold a SMKNA Family Gathering in Botanical Garden of Bedugul.
• Subject (He, She, It) + Infinitive (Verb I) + -s/-es
Example:
Please bring a dictionary because it helps you in learning English.

1. To express present situation:

2. To express fixed arrangements:
The English Examination starts at 09.00.

• Simple Future Tense


The simple future refers to a time later than now. It is used to describe a
future event. The simple future is used:
• Subject + will + Infinitive (Verb I)
Example:
The English class will start soon.

• Conjunction
A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.
Conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, because, etc.
Example:
For more information, please contact our English teacher Miss Nana or Mr. Indra.

• Day and Date


Writing date in English is going to be different to the Indonesian. We have to start with the day
first and follow by the month, the date and the year.
Example:
The members of English Club have to go to the library on Sunday on December 28, 2018.

• Preposition
A preposition is a word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a
sentence. Prepositions are usually short words, and they are normally placed directly in front
of nouns. In some cases, you’ll find prepositions in front of gerund verbs. Some preposition are
commonly used in announcement text are on, in and at. On is used to express day, date and
month, In is used to express location, and At is used to express hour.
Example:
The students have to collect the paper in my office on Friday at 2 p.m. on December 1, 2018.

DERIVATION (NOUNS FROM VERBS)

Derivation is the word formation process in which a derivational affix attaches to the base form of
a word to create a new word. Affixes, which include prefixes and suffixes, are bound morphemes.
Morphemes are the smallest linguistic unit of a language with semantic meaning. Bound
morphemes, unlike free morphemes, cannot stand alone but must attach to another morpheme
such as a word. For example, the following two lists provide examples of some common suffixes
with definitions in English:

Announcement
We are sorry to inform that the bazaar event (February 23, 2018) has been cancelled. After a day
of discussion between the teachers and the committees, the event had to be cancelled due the
bad weather in our region. We are extremely upset about this decision, but this cancelation is
good for us all. We are terribly sorry to all students who helped us, and who had stalls at the
event.
Thank you for your support. We hope we can work together again in different event.

Bazaar Committee
Look at the bolded words! Those nouns come from “discuss, decide, and cancel”. Those nouns
are called derivation nouns. A derivation noun derive from a verb from, you can take certain
suffixes “-tion, -sion, -ance, and others”, add them to verbs, and produce derivative nouns. A
suffix normally marks a word as an adjective, verb or noun. A suffix is placed at the end of the
word.
