Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study

Hawkins (2017) stated that the definition of

beauty has been shaped by society’s standards instead of

what people actually look like. It signifies that the

society sets up expectation of how we define beauty by

manipulating beliefs of people to recognize that body

shape, skin, color, race, ethnicity or Anglicized

features are what makes a person distinguish their beauty

instead of what people actually look like in reality.

This makes people believe that the beauty that they see,

especially in films, is something that they need to

attain in order to be considered as attractive.

Japan, Spain, and America have invaded the

Philippines, leaving fascination impact on its culture

and people. According to Rondilla (2009). The Filipino

fascination with lighter skin can be traced back to the

three Centuries of Spanish oppression, which was

subsequentive followed by American influence. As

Mandaraog (2014) explains fair skin has long been

preferred in American and Spanish societies, as it is

associated with wealth and social status. This difference

for fair scompiexions to perceive lighter skin as more

desirable than darker skin. Additionally, during that

time having a curvier figure was considered attractive,

as it represented affluence and social standing. These

notions of beauty and societal expectations were shape by

the colonizing countries and have a profound effect on

how Filipino women and their appearance are perceived.

Overtime attitudes over women have evolved, and in

twenty.

The Researcher conduct this study because some

of us experience this kind of situation, we experience

losing confidence in ourselves because of what we saw on

social media. The importance of our study is that they

can avoid such thoughts. The Researcher chose this so

they know that beauty does not based on social media. The

very reason why we conduct this study is to make them

realize that they don’t need to change or change

themselves to fit on what social media set as a standards

because we are all beautiful in our own way

Theoretical Framework

Cultivation implies those exposed to media

interpret social realities according to how such

realities are portrayed in the media. Cultivation theory

is a communications and sociological framework which

posits that long term expure to media shapes how to

consumers of media perceived the world as well conduct

themselves in life. (NABI&RADDIE, 2008)

According to George Gerbner's theory

cultivation is what influence television has on viewers

because of different things they show. Therefore George

stated there's a bad effect to the viewers. In addition

since everything is exposed on social media people tend

to adopt what they see and apply it in their personal

life.

Social comparison theory was first popularize

by psychologist leon festinger in 1954.SCT propose that

there is a primitive arive within individuals to compare

themeselves with others on order to evaluate their own

opinions and abilities.

This theory shows that social comparison became

one of the habits that most people do in order to compare

themselves with others so they can evaluate but it's also

acceptable for some because it is one of the ways that

strengthens bonds as well as it insures the uniformity of

within a social group Leon Festinger clearly states that

social comparison theory is about how we compare in every

individual's the significance of this theory in our

research it's that we can deeply dig into the study of

comparison in society

Denis Dutton developed a Darwinian theory of

beauty. according to these theory, the experience of

beauty is one of the ways that evolution has of arousing

and sustaining interest in order to encourage us towards

making the most adaptive decisions for survival and

reputation. to illustrate artistic beauty, which More

frequently than not is deemed the result of a cultural

conditioning, dutton offeres us the pear. shaped "hand -

axes" associated with early humans, first found in france

Denis Dutton's Darwinian theory of beauty

suggests that the experience of beauty is a product of

evolution, serving to arouse and sustain our interest in

making adaptive decisions. It's not just a result of

cultural conditioning. Dutton uses the example of pear-

shaped hand-axes found in France to illustrate how even

functional objects can possess artistic beauty and

influence our perceptions and choices.

our female respondent is dissatisfied with the looks,

especially with their faces (56%). However, this is not

applied to male respondent, only 36% of male respondent

is dissatisfied with their faces, 64% answered they feel

comfortable with their looks. Despite this fact, only 32%

of female respondent who want to change their appearance,

68% do not want to change their looks. The reason of this

answer is if they change their looks is against God’s law

or contrary to their belief (67%), the other reason is

Therefore, the result was mixed in between Asian and

western standard. Not so sharply-pointed and big nose,

Chonx Tibajia (2018) in his article titled What

is Filipina beauty in the digital age? discusses the

evolving concept of beauty in contemporary society,

emphasizing the significance of acceptance and individual

expression. The author highlights the transformative role

of social media platforms, particularly Instagram, and

how it has revolutionized the perception and application

of aesthetics. The advent of smartphones equipped with

this paradigm shift. Previously, the notion of beauty was

confined to imperfections, with little awareness of the

potential for visual enhancement and control afforded by

digital platforms. The act of transferring photos from

traditional cameras to Instagram was once regarded as

deceitful, as it deviated from portraying an authentic

representation of real life. However, as technology has

progressed, allowing for greater manipulation and

creative expression, cosmetic and surgical advancements

have provided individuals with tools to augment their

appearance in both the digital realm and real life.

Foreign Literature

Mavis Henriques, Debasis Patnaik (2020) in

their article, Titled, SOCIAL MEDIA AND IT'S EFFECTS ON

BEAUTY, discuss, that beauty is concerned with physical

and mental health as both are intimately related. Short-

term decisions to alter one's body structure irrespective

of genetic, environmental, occupational and nutritional

needs can leave medium - and long- term effects. This

chapter analyzes the role of social media and its effects

on the standards of beauty. The researchers have

summarized the literature on how image social media

affects individuals negatively, in pushing them to engage

in life threatening beauty trends due to social

compliance and acceptance in society. The aim was to

review social networking sites impact on perception of

standards of beauty and never unrealistic trends gaining

popularity that could alter opinions and also cause harm

to individuals in the long run. This is ana emerging area

of research that is of high importance to the physical

and mental health in the beauty, health and hospitality

industry with the latter being manifested in depression,

anxiety and fear of non- acceptability and being seen as

a social gauche.

Synthesis of the Literature

By analyzing the data which has been collected

from 311 respondent, it can be concluded that there is no

major change in beauty values which are believed by the

citizen of City of Bandung. Long before the infiltration

of Korean Wave to Indonesia, western civilization has

already taken place in the community, which can be seen

on how the respondent response to the questionnaire.

Majority of the respondent choose straight-edged nose,

round eyes and oval shape face which are the main

characteristic of "beautiful" in the western cultural

standards. Mavis Henriques and Debasis Patnaik (2020)

discuss in their article "Social Media and Its Effects on

Beauty" how social media negatively affects individuals

by pushing them towards dangerous beauty trends for

social acceptance. They highlight the importance of
