The Reign of Robespierre

Following the events at the Bastille, the Third Estate's
National Assembly again demanded that King Louis XVI
address their concerns, but he was unable to do so. The
Third Estate and their National Assembly then took over the
country. A few years later, King Louis XVI was put on trial for
treason by the revolutionaries, who formally ended the
monarchy in France. Louis XVI was beheaded on January 21st, 1793.
The National Assembly changed its name several times. From 1793 to
1794, it was called the National Convention and led by a man named
Maximilien Robespierre. This period was known as the Reign of Terror.
Robespierre was a member of the Jacobins, a group of radical
revolutionaries who had a great amount of power at the time. The first
Jacobins were National Assembly members with common political ideas
who held meetings in the Jacobin monastery in Paris. The group grew
quickly once the revolution began. At the height of its power, it included
half a million members located all over the country. The Jacobins was
made up of two factions. The more moderate faction was called the
Girondists. The radical faction was called the Montagnards (mountain
group) and was led by Robespierre.
In an attempt to restore order in a fractured country under siege from
foreign enemies and civil war skirmishes, Robespierre took over the
government of France on September 5, 1793. He declared that the “order
of the day” would be terror. Thus began the most violent period of the
French Revolution. During this time, it was a crime punishable by death to
even be suspected of not supporting the revolution.
Robespierre was eventually removed from office by the French people
and executed. The Jacobin Club was disbanded and many of its leaders
were imprisoned or put to death.
