• This examination will take place on 14 November 2023 from 10:00 to 13:00.
• Please note that the onus rests on you to ensure that your answer script uploaded
onto Moodle is the final and correct version. No amendments to submissions will be
accepted after the closing time.
• No late submissions will be accepted, and late submissions will be awarded a zero
mark.
• Please number your answers correctly.
• The uploaded answer script must have a cover page (provided). Please ensure that
the module code, your registered name, identity number and student number appear
on the cover page.
• The answer script must have the signed honesty declaration form (provided). Please
ensure that you read, understand and sign the form.
• Answer each section/question of the examination on a new page (indicating the
section/question and the module code on the page).
• The answer script must be in PDF format only and the following naming convention of
the final file must be used when submitting the document on Moodle: STUDENT

Question 1 [25 Marks]

You have been appointed as the new Operations Manager, specifically to secure the assets of
XYZ railway organisation. XYZ have suffered over the years losses (in the range of +- R40
billion) in its railway infrastructure including theft of coppers wires, vandalization of transformers
etc. In addition, XYZ has lost business opportunities to transport goods from business sectors
such as mines, agriculture etc. During this time, XYZ organization was left with no security
contract and leaving it vulnerable to theft of assets and damages of its infrastructure.
As the new Operations Manager, you are required to make a submission or a report to the
Executive Committee (EXCO) on how you can improve XYZ’s situation. In particular, identify
and critically discuss the cause and effects of the inability of XYZ to provide services to its
business stakeholders. (You are expected to make use of Ishikawa diagram/Fishbone
diagram).
Question 2 [25 Marks]
In leveraging technological advancement, make use of XYZ railway organization

comprehensively discuss how modern technology such as robotics and drone systems, internet
of things can be used in improving and protecting physical assets from theft and damages.
Question3 [50 Marks]
While most of XYZ railway organization’s infrastructure is dilapidated and needs to be fixed, it
has been furthermore reported that illegal settlement on the railway tracks as well as in some
regions in the country are also pausing a great challenge to XYZ’s operations... Using your
answers to Question 1 and Question 2, answer the following questions:
a) Identify and discuss the factors you would use to judge the performance of XYZ railway
operations? (25 marks)
b) Identify and discuss the improvement priority would you give to each of these
performance measures. (25 marks)
