answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause a disaster.
According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes which ambitious
parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic
parental expectations can cause great damage to children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitious in a
sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents are very supportive of their
child.
Michael Collins is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to
concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week
for violin lessons. Michael’s mother knows very little about music, but his father plays the trumpet in a large
orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling.
Winston Smith, Michael’s friend, however, is not so lucky. Both his parents are successful musicians, and
they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter
him for every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. Winston is always afraid
that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.

answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
During the nineteenth century, women in the United States organized and participated in a large number of
reform movements, including movements to reorganize the prison system, improve education, ban the sale of
alcohol, and, most importantly, to free the slaves. Some women saw similarities in the social status of women and
slaves. Women like Elizabeth Cady, Stanton and Lucy Stone were feminists and abolitionists who supported the
rights of both women and blacks. A number of male abolitionists, including William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell
Philips, also supported the rights of women to speak and participate equally with men in anti-slavery activities.
Probably more than any other movement, abolitionism offered women a previously denied entry into politics.
They became involved primarily in order to better their living conditions and the conditions of others.
When the Civil War ended in 1865, the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution adopted
in 1868 and 1870 granted citizenship and suffrage to blacks but not to women. Discouraged but resolved,
feminists influenced more and more women to demand the right to vote. In 1869 the Wyoming Territory had
yielded to demands by feminists, but eastern states resisted more stubbornly than before. A women’s suffrage bill
had been presented to every Congress since 1878, but it continually failed to pass until 1920, when the
Nineteenth Amendment granted women the rights to vote.
