Alice And Barry Face
What would life be like if people didn t undergo change? Many opportunities happen in
life because of adjustments people make for themselves. In the short stories Mirror Image
by Lena Coakley and Saturday Climbing by W.D. Valgardson the protagonists Alice and
Barry both have struggles with the major changes happening in their life. Throughout
their stories, they become less pessimistic, they adress their problems and they gain a
newfound confidence and trust in others. Changecan be extremely difficult, but its a
necessary step towards a positive life.

In both stories, the protagonists show fear towards changes which are occurring in
their lives. Barry from Saturday Climbing has a pessimistic attitude about his
daughters plans to move away for her post secondary education. This is because he
leads a plain life for them both in order to keep his daughter safe. He did his best to
keep life simple and uncomplicated. It was, he thought, the way to provide her with
security (20). His fear comes from the idea that he will have no way of keeping her
safe if she is away, on her own. Alice from Mirror Image also has fear and a sense of
denial, though this stems from undergoing a brain transplant. While looking in her hand
mirror she said to herself Just you, Alice... ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Barry found himself struggling to fully trust his daughter, he reminded himself
of a quote a student was told him: the world seeks balance (27). He allowed his
daughter to become more independant because of that quote, causing their relationship
to grow stronger. Alice neeeded validation that she was still herself, though she was in
a different body. I ll tell her I looked into your eyes and that i didn t see my daughter
(6). When Alice saw her body donor s father, he didn t recognize her. This gave her
validation that even though she didn t appear the same, she still was her own
Homosexuality and University Press
Homosexuality (male).

Definition Homosexuality refers to sexual behaviors and desires between males or

between females. Gay refers to self identification with such practices and desires, like
homosexual, both terms mostly used only for men. Lesbian is its female counterpart.
Such definitions have run into major problems, and nowadays the concept queer is used
to indicate the fluency of sexual practices and gender performances.

Sociological context

Since the 1970s, homosexuality has become the topic of an interdisciplinary

specialization variously called gay and lesbian, queer or LGBT studies (Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Transgender to which sometimes are added QQI: Queer, Questioning and
Intersexual). The field is far removed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Dutch physician and homosexual rights activist Lucien von Römer worked with
Hirschfeld on sexual statistics. In a survey of 308 Amsterdam students done in 1904,
he not only counted the men who identified as homosexual (2%) and bisexual (4%),
but as well those who had gay sex during puberty (21%) or homosexual fantasies (6%).
In the first Dutch gay novel that appeared this same year, the author Jacob Israël de
Haan told how he as a student made fun answering the questions. He already made clear
how unreliable such data often are.
Hirschfeld also came with the first urban geography, Berlin s Third Gender (1904) in
which he described the city s gay subculture of bars and parks and the elaborate world
of male prostitution. Mainly German books on the history of sexual morality (
Sittengeschichte ) that often included chapters on homosexuality, preceded and
influenced the work of later sociologists and historians, like Norbert Elias and Michel
Foucault. The work of these psychiatrists who started to give names, definitions and
identities to disease, crime and perversion, made possible the work of sociologists
creating labeling theory. In many ways, this early research paved the way for what
would become a sociology of (homo)sexuality (Schmeidler 1932). The enormous body
of work, available mainly thanks to early, prewar German sexology, was largely
forgotten when the main location of sex research after World War II moved
Langston Hughes Theme for English B and Gerald Graff’s...
Langston Hughes Theme for English B and Gerald Graff s essay Hidden Intellectualism
portray racial separation and intellectual isolation, respectively. Hughes essay is poetic
justice, and Graff s is a call to arms. Hughes is short and to the point and is simply what
it is, no arguing or convincing, just raw thought. Graff s is highly intellectual; offering
examples and reasoning, and it could even be seen as a not quite finished plea to the
nation to reevaluate our education system. But the many differences in these articles are
not what they seem. These so called differences are really just distractions we choose to
see on the surface, but in fact, the essays work together quite well. When examined
closely, looking past the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hughes feels like his race places a large part in his education at the prestigious school
he attends, stating I am the only colored student in my class / The steps from [my
school] lead down into Harlem, (799). This is an obviously intentional phrase. Hughes
knows his race and where he s from is important to the white members of his school,
whether negative or positive. In turn, Graff speaks about this in the beginning of his
essay and says ... my preference for sports over schoolwork was not anti intellectualism
so much as intellectualism by other means, (299). Here, Graff is essentially saying that
teaching in his school was biased against non standard means of education, and therefore
could not cater to the needs of the working class hoods (299). In this respect, educational
bias of race or intellectual preference is prominent on both of the author s essays, even
though the direct quotations may not reveal it outright.
While Hughes and Graff have close core ideas, they do differ in certain elements. One
of these important elements is temperament. The temperament of an essay or just a
message in general is very important to the nature of message you re creating. Graff s
essay temperament is displayed in a somewhat comedic, logical assessment of his
childhood and school experience. Graff quotes bullies and quotes sports facts, giving his
own attitude of the topic behind his message. This very much supports his message of a
