How it began and expanded:

The biggest film and television production firm in the world is

Universal Studios, however it handed off a substantial portion of its
television activities in late 1997. Many entertainment-related businesses
are included under the Universal brand, including those that create and
release music and movies.Additional Universal activities include book
publishing, concert promotion, two theme parks run by Universal
Studios, administration of six amphitheaters, and licensing and
marketing of goods based on its movies. Moreover, to running the
Spencer Gifts retail chain, which has over 500 locations nationwide,
Universal also owns twenty-five percent of the in Loews Cineplex
Entertainment, which runs roughly 450 movie theaters.

In 1912, Carl Laemmle established Universal Studios in Chicago

. The world's first film studio established specifically for the creation of
feature-length films was purchased by him in 1914 when he paid
$165,000 for a 230-acre ranch near the eastern end of the San
Fernando Valley. On March 15, 1915, Laemmle received a solid gold
key from Lankershim Township that he used to unlock the entrance to
Universal City. Laemmle hosted a large gathering at Universal City for
its big opening. It signaled Hollywood's ascent to the top position in
American filmmaking. As well, it marked the start of a sector of the

5
economy that would have a tremendous and sweeping influence on the
world. The first Universal production was a silent movie, and Lon
Chaney, one of the greatest actors in Hollywood history, had a
significant role in its success. The money Chaney made at the box
office was crucial in getting Universal off the ground. He was the most
appreciated person during the Silent Era and is most known for his role
in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Joe Pasternak served as the head of Universal's German production
company, Deutsche Universal-Film AG, which was established in 1926.
As Hitler's control over central Europe grew, this unit moved to Hungary
and later Austria, where it continued to create three to four movies year
until 1936. These productions were made in German, or sporadically
Hungarian or Polish, before the invention of sound. Universal was
negotiating contracts with cartoon makers at the beginning of 1927
because they wanted to resume making them. R. H. Cochrane,
Universal's vice president, was present when Charles Mintz signed a
contract with the company on March 4. 26 "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit"
cartoons were to be created by Mintz's business, Winkler Pictures, for
Universal. The Walt Disney Company
After a successful run-in theater, Mintz would strike a contract with
Universal that would guarantee three more years of Oswald cartoons.
But after trying unsuccessfully to get Disney to agree to a reduced price
for making the movies, Mintz hired the majority of Walt's animators to
work at his own company. Disney and Iwerks would work on Mickey
Mouse covertly while completing the Oswald movies they were
contractually required to do. After that, Universal cut its ties to Mintz
and established its own internal animation studio under the direction of
Walter Lantz to create Oswald shorts.then The Walt Disney Company
purchased all of the Disney-animated Oswald cartoons from
NBCUniversal in February 2006, along with the character's rights.
Disney granted ABC's Al Michaels his contract release in exchange so
that he could work on NBC's recently purchased Sunday night NFL
football package.
