Termite Reaction Lab Report
Termites
Methods:
As an entomology class, consisting of 6 students and a professor, we walked around a
rural campus for approximately 45 minutes in Laurinburg, North Carolina; collecting
termites (unsure of exact scientific name) from underneath decomposing logs from
multiple sites within an acre area. With these samples, and the efforts of Jared Kay
(student), who continued the search after class, we had a combined total of 30 termites
including worker and soldier castes to study.
After samples were collected and consolidated to a tuple ware container, we set up the
experiment in the science lab, located at St. Andrews University, Laurinburg. The
experiment consisted of a white sheet of paper, and three writing utensils : rollerball, ball
point, and a sharpie. In essence, we release one termite at a time onto the white paper and
draw lines with each of the pens listed above; to determine which line or lines the termite
prefers. Each termite was tested and documented. ... Show more content on

This test was chosen because we were comparing collected data with what we expected
(Kowalczyk, D.). This allowed us to support our hypothesis: termites will follow the line
drawn by the ball point pen because it is similar to the smell used by termites to mark
designated paths, or prove our null hypothesis which stated that the termites will not
follow the ball point pen. By comparing the categories, how many termites followed a
certain pen or how many did not, the most favorable writing utensil among the collected
termites was determined. The significance level alpha chosen was .05 degrees of
Dow’s Bid for Rohm and Haas
Dow sBidforRohmandHaas1.Why does Dow want to buy Rohm and Haas? Dow, a
producer of low valued cyclical commodity chemicals, had future aspirations of being not
only the largest but as well the highest valued chemical company in the United States. Its
strategy was simple: to be an asset light company with extremely high growth potential
fuelled through advanced technology, geographical reach, strong industry channels and
an overall switch in to the advanced specialty chemical and materials market. As a result
when the option to purchase Rohm and Haas was put to market Dow jumped
immediately on the opportunity. Rohm and Haas brought with it mass amounts of
experience in the specialty chemical business, strong... Show more content on

But Termination Fees §7.2a protects both parties from breaching the contract by the
other party. II. Risk of Solicitation Contractual Terms included: §5.3 No solicitation,
§8.10 Third Party Beneficiaries As a attractive acquisition target, there are other
buyers who are interested in Rohm. Therefore, Dow faces the risk of other bidders
who make better offers. §5.3 No solicitation limits Rohm not to solicit other parties to
competitive bid, therefore reduces Dow s risk. Also, §8.10 protects both parties by
prohibiting any other person benefit from the merger. III. Risk from Financial Side

Rohm is important to both Rohm s and Dow s shareholders. The financial evaluation

§ 3.1 Material Adverse Effect (MAE clause) The MAE clause protects buyer s interests
by allowing the buyer to terminate the deal under special circumstances and changes
that had a material adverse effect on the target company s business. However, it is
extremely hard to define whether an event is under MAE or not. So in real world, MAE
clause does not necessarily protect buyer s benefits. In this case, the MAE actually favors
Rohm since the financial crisis affected the whole chemical industry and financial
Essay on Flannery OConnor
Flannery OConnor In her short story Everything That Rises Must Converge, Flannery
O Connor allows the story to be told from the perspective of Julian, a recent college
graduate who appears to be waiting for a job, while living at home with his mother. His
relationship with his mother is rocky at times, to say the least. It is constantly mired with
conflicts about the Old South and the New South . Julian must come to terms with
himself, either he is an over protective son or just a pain in her ass. Even though Julian
seems to dislike his mother s viewpoints, he continues to depends on her for stability .
When the final confrentation between Julian s mother and the large black women results

Julian does not like his mother. To him she is an embarassment, a burden and
backwards to his new way of thinking. He himself, has learned to recognize racism, and
argues against it. However, when his mother is the instigator, the issue becomes more
personal, and he defends her. Some how like picking on my baby brother it is alright,
but when someone else does it offends me. Julian does take into account that he is
educated and presumes himself to be opposite of his mother, but he finds that it is not
true, and he remains a racist. Instead of confronting this as a problem, he seeks to
belittle his mother. When the Negro women enters the bus, he wishes she would sit
beside his mother in order to disturb her. He could think of no better arrangement . Yet
to his annoyance, she squeezes herself into the seat next to him . His lack of insight
regarding their relationship is revealed when he fantasizes himself presenting his
mother with a black acquaitance: either a business associate, a lover or even the doctor
he could hire to heal her. When he asks the man with the paper for a light (he has
nothing to smoke), embarrassing himself solely to perplex her. He remains a racist not
because it was instilled in him by his mother, but because he continues to exploit the
black culture for the sole purpose of changing his mother. Julian s culture in his own
mind fails because it does not touch his being.
Northanger Abbey
The book Northanger Abbey focuses on young people or teenagers in the 19th Century
Britain. The focus of the book is mainly directed towards the way young people fit in a
society that was based on rigid hierarchical system that put people into different classes
according to wealth, education, reputation and cultural background. Each of the societal
rankings has a given set of behavioural patterns that are expected from them by the
society as a whole and these expectations are a source of frustration, obstacles,
misunderstanding and separation for the young people as they try to fit in. This paper is
a presentation of the effects that these social rules of the high class had on the central
characters of the novel.

Making friends and trying to figure out true friends from false ones is a major part of
the plot and it affects all the concerned characters. This issue of friendship is seen
when Isabelle is not particularly concerned or ashamed that James is Catherine, her
friend s brother. We see that she is used to not having and does not attach much
importance to permanent relationships and this can be traced back to her being raised
in that big city environment that is not conducive to long lasting relationships.
Catherine on the other hand loves and cherishes good friendships and, unlike Isabelle,
she grew up in that small community environment that fosters such true and long
lasting friendships. Closely related to the issue of friendship in the plot is the issue of
families. Different types of families are discussed in the book and put in contrast.
These include rich families and poor families, families with many kids versus those
with few, families with both parents as opposed to those without, and lastly families
living in the rural areas versus those living in the cities. This is clearly demonstrated
when Isabelle s brother, John, tries to convince the General to deny giving consent to the
marriage between Henry and Catherine only because Catherine s family, the Morlands,
was poor. Isabelle s family, the Thorpes, are wealthy. This could actually be the reason
why
