Oral - The Line City
Introduction :
Neom is a large complex which includes The Line, the ski resort and the hexagon and is situated
between the Red Sea and mountains rising to over 2,500 metres. The Line is a futuristic smart city
project located in Neom, Saudi Arabia. The city would be designed in such a way that there would
be no cars, no streets and no carbon emissions. The Line will use 100% renewable energy and
95% of the land will be preserved for nature. Unlike traditional cities, people's health and well-being
will come before transport and infrastructure. The project will be barely 200 metres wide but 170
kilometres long, and 500 metres above sea level. When completed, The Line will be able to
accommodate 9 million people and will be built on an area of just 34 square kilometres.
Now let's talk about Neom's areas of innovation. Firstly, the minimal footprint of the infrastructure
will make it possible to improve the efficiency of urban systems. By design, The Line offers
immediate and continuous access to nature within a 2-minute walk, thanks to its wide variety of
suspended open spaces on several levels.
Secondly, the city will be carbon-free thanks to the elimination of carbon-intensive infrastructure
such as cars and roads. It will run on 100% renewable energy, including for its industrial activities.
The integration of nature and open spaces throughout the city will play an important role in
purifying air quality.
What's more, everything will be accessible within a five-minute walk, and an efficient public
transport network will provide an end-to-end journey in just 20 minutes. Automated services will be
optimised by artificial intelligence. Thanks to the proximity of amenities, residents of The Line will
be able to see their family and friends often and spontaneously.
Finally, to ensure the presence of micro-climate spaces, the environment has been carefully
designed to promote an optimal balance between sunlight, shade and natural ventilation. In
addition, open green spaces throughout the city will further enhance the comfort of the people who
live, work and stay there.
In terms of advantages, this new city should be eco-responsible, since people will no longer travel
by car, but on foot or by underground train, which should have a zero carbon footprint.
Secondly, the fact that the city will be built vertically means that the land footprint will be fairly
small. The ambition of this project is therefore to emit zero greenhouse gases.
The climate is expected to be favourable throughout the year, but Neom has not yet indicated how
it will cope with the 40 degrees all year round and the low rainfall.
These are all promises that the directors of this project hope to keep, but they are also attracting a
great deal of criticism. On paper, The Line project has everything to seduce: an eco-responsible
city of the future, where everything is accessible in less than 5 Minutes and which can
accommodate up to 9 million people, all available in less than 10 years. However, it should be
noted that The Line is being promoted by Saoudia, which offers 2 domestic flights a month to all its
executives, in total contradiction with its intentions to limit its carbon footprint. In addition, many
executives are paid by Saudi Arabia to come and coordinate the construction work.
Secondly, the construction of this project will have an irreversible impact on flora and fauna.
Thousands of animals will see their way of life totally disrupted.
Finally, it should be noted that the area where The Line is to be built is occupied by tribes. This
means that they will have to be relocated, regardless of whether the authorities use force to do so.
In early October, the special courts sentenced 3 representatives of one of these tribes to death.
