Control valve bypasses

• The typical design premise is that the control valve bypasses are normally closed. The bypasses are used primarily for
control valve maintenance.
• As a guideline, a Diameter Nominal 50mm (Nominal Pipe Size 2in) bypass should be provided when the run pipe is larger
than DN 150mm (NPS 6in) and the pressure difference is larger than 15 bar (218 psi).
• A bypass is not necessary in cases where a control valve is installed downstream, and the control valve can be opened
gradually after opening the upstream block valve. The decision to install an equalizing bypass is a part of the process
design.
• bypass is only used for control valve maintenance. Control valve and bypass both open would be a basis for design if the
bypass is used for reasons other than control valve maintenance.

Control valve bypasses
• If the bypass valve is used exclusively for maintenance and not mechanically locked closed, then the following shall apply
when evaluating the bypass and control valve both open:
a. remote accumulations apply;
b. premise bypass valve is wide open during failure of the control valve.
• If the bypass valve is routinely used during operations, then the following shall apply when evaluating the bypass and
control valve both open:
a. design accumulations apply;
b. premise bypass valve is wide open during failure of the control valve.
If the bypass valve is mechanically locked closed, then the following shall apply when evaluating the bypass and control
valve both open:
a. remote accumulations apply;
b. evaluate overpressure for 100% opening of the bypass valve, assuming the control valve remains in the last position (i.e.,
doesn't respond to close).

Control valve bypasses

• A single bleed valve SHALL [PS] be provided for all other fluid services, with bleed valve blanked or plugged, at
control valves with a by-pass.

valve isolation is required to be executed as double valve isolation, it SHALL [PS] be applied to control valves with a
by-pass.

Control valve bypasses

• An important consideration is the effect of having a manual bypass on the inlet control valve(s) at least partially open. If,
during operation, the bypass valve is opened to provide additional flow, then this total flow (control valve wide open and
bypass valve normal position) shall be considered in the relieving scenario

• The potential for the bypass valve to be inadvertently opened (e.g., during normal operations, control valve maintenance,
start-up, shutdown, or special operations) while the control valve is operating (both bypass and control valve wide open)
should also be considered unless administrative controls are in place.

Control valve bypasses

For a typical arrangement of control valve

1. Sufficient clearance shall be provided above and below the control valve for dismantling purpose.

2. The bypass valve shall not be located directly above the control valve.
