1. A lorry of mass 4.4 × 104 kg travels along a straight, horizontal road at 20 m / s.

(a) Calculate the kinetic energy of the lorry.

kinetic energy = ........................................................ [3]

(b) The lorry driver sees an obstruction ahead and applies the brakes. The lorry slows down and stops. The lorry
stops a distance of 40 m from where the driver first applies the brakes.

As it slows down, the kinetic energy of the lorry decreases to zero.

The kinetic energy decreases as work is done by the braking force exerted on the lorry.

(i) State the formula that relates the work done to the force.

..................................................................................................................................................................................... [1]

(ii) Calculate the braking force exerted on the lorry.

force = ........................................................ [2]

2. Fig. 2.1 shows an electric motor lifting a load.

fig. 2.1

The load, of weight 5.0 N, is raised through a vertical height of 3.5 m at a constant speed. The efficiency of the
electric motor is 0.65 (65%).
(a) Calculate the increase in gravitational potential energy of the load.

gravitational potential energy = ...........................................................[2]

(b) (i) State the formula that relates efficiency, energy input and useful energy output.

............................................................................................................................................................................................

........................................................................................................................................................................................[1]

(ii) Calculate the energy input to the motor.

energy input = ...........................................................[2]

(c) Suggest one reason why the efficiency of the motor is less than 1.0 (100%).

3. A laboratory floor has a surface that prevents people from slipping when the floor is wet.

(a) Name the force that prevents a person from slipping.

……………………………………….............................................................................................................................................. [1]

(b) A stool has a round non-slip pad fitted to the bottom of each leg.
(i) The stool has four legs. The area of each pad is 3cm2. The weight of the stool is 75N. A student sits on the stool.
The weight of the student is 525N.
Calculate the pressure acting on the floor due to the student and the stool.

pressure = ..............................................N/ cm2 [3]

(ii) The legs of the stool are made of hollow metal tubes. Fig. 5.1 shows the bottom of a stool leg with and without a
pad.

Explain why a stool leg without a pad does more damage to the floor.

4. A submarine is at rest deep beneath the surface of the sea. The gravitational field strength is 10 N / kg, the
atmospheric pressure is 1.0 × 105 Pa and the density of sea water is 1.0 × 103 kg / m3.

(a) Calculate
(i) the pressure due to the sea water at a depth of 120 m,

pressure = ................................................. [2]

(ii) the total pressure at a depth of 120 m.

total pressure = ................................................. [1]

Fig. 5.1 shows a horizontal hatch of surface area 0.45 m2 on the top of the submarine.
The hatch is at a depth of 120 m beneath the surface of the sea.
Fig. 5.1

(i) Calculate the downward force acting on the surface of the hatch.

force = ................................................. [2]

(ii) State two reasons why the force needed to lift the hatch is different from the value calculated in (i).

1..........................................................................................................................................................................................

2. ........................................................................................................................................................................................

5. Fig. 5.1 shows a simple mercury barometer, drawn 1/10 full size.

Fig. 5.1
(a) On Fig. 5.1, use your rule to make an appropriate measurement, and then use it to calculate the atmospheric
pressure.

atmospheric pressure = ..................................... cm Hg [2]

(b) State what occupies the space in the tube above the mercury.

.......................................................................................................................................................................... [1]

(c) On another occasion, the atmospheric pressure is much less than that shown in Fig. 5.1.

On Fig. 5.1, mark where the mercury surfaces in the tube and in the reservoir might be. [2]

(d) The tube above the mercury gets broken and allows air to move in to and out of the tube. Explain why the
barometer no longer functions.
