Nordkalk Wollastonite

FW 635

Wollastonite CaSiO3 Physical properties of wollastonite

Wollastonite is a natural calcium silicate mineral with Colour White
the molecular formula CaSiO3. It has been named
Particle shape Needles
after William Hyde Wollaston, the English chemist
and mineralogist, who discovered the mineral in pH 9.9
the late 1700‘s. Wollastonite has been formed in Hardness (Mohs) 4.5
metamorphosis reaction between limestone and Density (g/cm )3
2.94
quartz. The reaction has been as follows: CaCO3 Melting Point, theoretical (ºC) 1540
+ SiO2 → CaSiO3 + CO2. Wollastonite is the only
naturally occurring white and acicular mineral. Sintering temperature (ºC) 991–1196
Wollastonite is mainly used as source of CaO Coefficient of Expansion 6.5 x 10-6
in ceramics and metallurgical powders, and as (mm/mm/ºC)
reinforcing filler in plastics, paints & coatings and Refractive index 1.63
friction materials.

Nordkalk wollastonite Typical composition of Nordkalk wollastonite

Nordkalk Corporation is the leading producer of high Component %
quality limestone-based products and wollastonite in
SiO2 53
Northern Europe. All Nordkalk wollastonite products
are mined and processed in Lappeenranta, Finland. CaO 44
Nordkalk is the only wollastonite producer that Al2O3 0.8
holds it’s own raw material resource for this mineral
Fe2O3 0.2
in the EU –area. Nordkalk purifies the raw material
in unique chemical flotation process where calcite MgO 0.5
and the gangue are removed from wollastonite. Moisture (105 ºC) 0.04
This process makes the end product very high and Loss of Ignition (1000 ºC) 0.89
stable in quality and therefore they are well known
Melting point, measured (ºC) 1320
and respected in the global market.
