Congratulate yourself for that.
Listening is one of the four macro skills in communication that you need
to develop as a language learner. Do you know that students spend most of the
time listening inside the classroom, compared to speaking, reading, and
writing?
You could already hear things even when you were still a baby, but
hearing is entirely different from listening. Hearing is natural and involuntary,
while listening is focused, voluntary, and with a purpose. Hearing is like hearing
the car passing by your house every day or the barking of your dog that you can
ignore if you want. Listening is when you want to understand, focus, or pay
more attention to someone speaking or when you want to concentrate and feel
the message of a song.
Why is listening important in learning communication skills?
5
Listening is a very important part of language learning because without
listening, communication is not achieved. Here are some important points of
listening in communication:
1. Listening allows you to comprehend the messages conveyed. The
speaker’s pitch, tone, and accent will help you understand what the
speaker is saying.
2. Listening helps you acquire pronunciation, stress, intonation, and
syntax. By listening, you will know how to correctly pronounce an
unfamiliar word.
3. Listening allows you to perform better, to follow instructions properly, and
to be able to make sound decisions. It helps you to become more aware of
what is going on in your surroundings.
What are the strategies that could help you improve your listening skills
and what are the tips you need to learn in acquiring these skills?
1. Predicting content
Have you ever watched a movie then guessed the ending of the story
correctly? If yes, this means that you have used your previous
knowledge in predicting the outcome of the story. And why have you
done this? Listening to words and the style of language used by the
actors in the movie helped you in getting the information. The
knowledge “stocked” in your brains is activated; as a result; you
understand what you were listening to.
Tip:
One of the best ways in improving this skill, especially if you are
taking a listening test is to go over the questions first and try to predict
the information you need to listen to. A question beginning with “who”
would allow you to listen to a person being mentioned in the listening text.
Be specifically attentive to this information.
6
notice how peaceful your place is. Listening is like getting the whole
picture or the meaning of the text. The words used by the speaker, the
sequence of information, and the description will help you understand
better the message being conveyed.
Tip:
Focus on the words spoken by the speaker. If there are new words
that you hear, group them with other words that have similar context, like
group them according to noun, adjectives or verbs.
3. Detecting signposts.
Signposts in communication refer to the words that link ideas to
help you understand what the speaker is talking about. Take for
example, when a speaker says, “I have three things on my mind now.”
Then most likely you will hear the speaker says, “First,….”, then, “the
second is…”, and then “finally,….”. Listen for these “signposts” or signal
words so that you could follow where the speaker or the text is leading
you.
Tip:
Review/relearn the signal words (conjunction, transitions) taught by
your teacher and recall the meaning of these words. If you hear them in
a listening activity/test, list them down and try to recall their function in
the sentence.
4. Looking for details.
Looking for details is like taking a closer look to get the specific
details of a thing. It is like climbing that tree in your backyard. But
instead of looking down, you inspect the parts of that tree. You look at
its leaves, trunk, fruits, and stems. You saw ants on the tree but
rejected looking at them because you know they are not parts of the
tree. You take note of the essential details in the text and eliminate
those that are not.
Tip:
In a listening test, quickly read the questions first. Look for the
important words and then decide the details you need to get while
listening to the text.
7
5. Inferring meaning.
Inferring meaning means making a decision or a conclusion to a
text from the clues given or by using your previous knowledge about a
situation.
It is like being on top of the tree, and then you see your mother
below looking up to you with a frown on her face. Without her saying
something to you, you just immediately went down the tree, because
you knew that she would scold you for climbing that tree.
In a listening text, you may hear words that will give you clues as
to who the speaker is or what the speaker feels on a certain situation.
An example is when a speaker says, “Be sure to return you report card
tomorrow.” You can conclude that the speaker is a teacher, and that the
teacher is speaking to the students. When the speaker says this line
loudly, you may decide that the speaker is angry, but when it is spoken
gently, you may decide that the speaker is caring.
Tip:
In a listening test, when there are words you don’t understand, look
for clues in the text. Also observe the manner on how the speaker delivers
the text.
I hope these strategies and tips will help you in improving your listening
skills. These strategies will guide you in this lesson and the next lessons
you will have in developing listening skills.
Let us try these strategies in this lesson. Going over the objectives of this
module, you will find out that you are expected to listen to get the
examples of social, moral, and economic issues stated in the poem.
Before moving on, let us first discuss the definition of social, moral, and
economic issues.
Social issues refer to general factors that damage or affect the society as
a whole or a larger part of the society. Examples include overpopulation,
poverty, malnutrition, discrimination, and hunger.
8
Moral issues refer to issues concerned with or relating to human
behavior, esp. the distinction between good and bad or right and wrong
behavior. Examples are corruption, abortion, suicide, divorce and crimes.
