General
The instrument clusters fitted to all Range Rover models are similar and only differ in the following features:
The instrument cluster is a totally electronic device which receives analogue or digital signals via hardwired or bus systems for
instrumentation operation.
The signals are processed by processors which transpose the data into analogue gauge indications or warning lamp
illumination. The cluster is connected to the vehicle electrical system by two connectors which provide all input and output
connections for instrument cluster operation.
The instrument cluster has two main functions; to provide information to the driver of the vehicle status and to process and
relay digital signals from and to other system controlling modules.
The instrument cluster also features a number of warning indicators. The warning indicators illuminate in one of four colors
which indicate the level of importance of the warning as follows:
Red = Warning
Amber = Caution
Green = System operative
Blue = Headlamp high beam operative.
WARNING INDICATORS
The warning indicators are located in two groups at the left and right hand side of the cluster. The turn signal indicators and
high beam warning indicators are located at the top of the display and the glow plug, DSC and HDC warning indicators are
located above the message center, between the two large analogue gauges.
The warning indicators can be split into two groups; self controlled and externally controlled.
Self controlled indicators are dependant on software logic within the instrument cluster for activation. The cluster software
controls the indicator check illumination at ignition on and all indicators whose operation is wholly controlled by the cluster,
the low fuel level warning indicator for example.
Externally controlled indicators are supplied with a current from another system controlling module or triggered by the cluster
on receipt of a bus message from another system module.
Some indicators are activated by an external system module, but the control logic is retained within the cluster. For example,
the turn signal indicator lamps are synchronised and controlled by the LCM, but the indicator illumination logic is retained
within the cluster. These indicators are shown in the following table as being self and externally controlled.
The following table shows the available indicator lamps and indicates if they are subject to a bulb check illumination and if
they are self controlled or externally controlled.
ANALOGUE INSTRUMENTS
speedometer
tachometer
fuel level gage
engine coolant temperature gage.
Speedometer
The speedometer is an electrically driven, analogue instrument for displaying the vehicle speed. The pointer needle is
electronically damped to prevent impacts on the vehicle wheels, causing deflection of the pointer needle.
The speedometer is driven by a CAN signal derived from the ABS module. The wheel speeds are measured by sensors reading
rotational speed from toothed targets on the hubs. These speeds are passed to the ABS module in the form of pulsed signals.
The ABS module is programmed that 48 pulses is equal to one revolution of the wheels and this equates in distance to
approximately 2 metres.
This information is passed from the ABS module, on a high speed CAN signal, to the instrument cluster and is received by the
microprocessor. The microprocessor applies a formula to the signal and calculates a numerical, 16 bit value for the signal. This
signal is then used by the speedometer drive to display the current speed to the driver. A second digital signal output is also
broadcast on the CAN, I and K buses for use by other systems.
Two versions of the speedometer display are used. One shows the speed in kilometres per hour and the other shows the
speed in miles per hour as the main display and kilometres per hour as a secondary display.
Tachometer
The tachometer is an electrically driven, analogue instrument for displaying the vehicle engine speed. The pointer needle is
electronically damped to prevent impacts on the vehicle wheels, causing deflection of the pointer needle.
The tachometer is driven by an engine speed signal transmitted on the CAN from the Engine Control Module (ECM).
Two versions of the tachometer are used for petrol and diesel engine variants. The petrol engine variants use a display which
has a maximum engine speed reading of 7000 rev/min. The diesel engine variant uses a display which has a maximum engine
speed reading of 6000 rev/min.
The fuel gage is an electrically driven, analogue instrument for displaying the fuel tank contents. The pointer needle is
electronically damped to prevent impacts on the vehicle wheels, causing deflection of the pointer needle. When the ignition is
off, the pointer returns to the empty position.
The instrument cluster is connected to two tank level sensors. One sensor is located in each side of the saddle type fuel tank
and uses a float operated potentiometer for measuring the tank contents. Each tank level sensor is supplied with a current
from the instrument cluster. The returned current, via the potentiometer of the sensor, is read by the processor. The reduced
current from both sensors is evaluated and converted into a signal to position the fuel gage needle at the appropriate level
reading.
When the processor determines that fuel tank contents have reached a predetermined level, the low fuel level warning
indicator is illuminated and a chime is emitted from the sounder to alert the driver of the low fuel condition.
The following table shows potentiometer resistance values in relation to fuel tank contents and the fuel gage display. The
figures are shown as a guide only because an infinite number of left/right sensor resistance values can be obtained.
The engine coolant temperature gage is an electrically driven, analogue instrument for displaying the engine coolant
temperature to the driver. The pointer needle is electronically damped to prevent impacts on the vehicle wheels causing
deflection of the pointer needle. When the ignition is off, the pointer returns to the cold position.
On 4.4L V8 and 4.2L V8 Supercharged models, the instrument cluster receives the engine coolant temperature signal from the
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) on a CAN signal from the Engine Control Module (ECM).
The following table shows coolant temperature relationship to gage needle pointer position - Applicable to 4.4L V8 and 4.2L V8
Supercharged vehicles only.

The following table shows coolant temperature relationship to resistance and gage needle pointer position - Applicable to 3.0L
Td6 vehicles only.
Coolant Temperature ECT Sensor Resistance (KOhm) Gage Needle Pointer Position
40°C (104°F) 2.967 At beginning of blue segment
75°C (167°F) 0.8250 At end of blue segment
75 to 115°C (167 to 239°F) 0.8250 to 0.2479 At centre of display
120°C (248°F) 0.2168 At beginning of red segment
140°C (284°F) 0.1302 At end of red segment
The engine coolant temperature gage is the same on all cluster variants. The gage display has a blue segment for low
temperatures and a red segment for excessively high temperatures. For normal engine operating temperatures the gage
needle pointer is positioned centrally in the gage display zone.
The Service Interval Indicator (SII) is displayed as a message in the message center. The instrument cluster calculates the
remaining distance to the next service and the remaining time to the next service.
For additional information, refer to: Information and Message Center (413-08 Information and Message Center, Description
and Operation).
BUS SYSTEMS
The instrument cluster has a controlling processor which processes software information and control input and output data for
the instrument cluster and other systems. The processor communicates with other systems on the vehicle via a number of
different interfaces.
Inputs are received as either analogue signals via conventional hardwired connections or as digital signals via multi-channel
connections with the bus systems. These signals are filtered and evaluated by the processor and the data converted into
actuation of the analogue gages and warning indicator lamps.
The instrument cluster also functions as a gateway for the bus systems, processing data from one system protocol and
translating it into another system protocol.
The instrument cluster receives and transmits data on the following bus systems:
NOTE: On 3.0L Td6 models, the instrument cluster acts as a terminator for the high speed Volcano CAN. On petrol
models the instrument cluster provides a 'loop-through' for the high speed Volcano CAN.
CAUTION: When a new instrument cluster is to be installed, T4 must be connected to vehicle and the instrument cluster
renewal procedure followed to replace the cluster. This will ensure that vehicle coding data is correctly installed in the new
instrument cluster. T4 will also record the current service interval data and restore the settings to the new instrument cluster.
In the event of a new instrument cluster having to be installed, certain information needs to be maintained to prevent data
loss. This information is transferred continuously from the instrument cluster on the I bus and is received and held in an
EEPROM in the LCM. The data is also stored, along with other vehicle specification data, in the Engine Control Module (ECM).
When a new instrument cluster is installed, the LCM will update the instrument cluster EEPROM with the stored data providing
the following parameters are met:
Vehicle coding data, such as engine type, market, etc., is stored in the ECM and retrieved by T4 and used to update the new
instrument cluster.
If the VIN in the instrument cluster is set to 0, only service interval data is passed from the LCM EEPROM to the instrument
cluster RAM, it is not stored in the instrument cluster EEPROM. The total distance displayed in the odometer LCD is frozen at
the value stored in the instrument cluster EEPROM.
If any of the stored data in the LCM EEPROM conflicts with the data within the instrument cluster, a lamp, known as a
manipulation point, is illuminated in the cluster. The manipulation point is located adjacent to the trip meter LCD.
The VIN transferred from the LCM on the I Bus to instrument cluster is 0
The VIN in the instrument cluster is 0
The VIN in the LCM is different to the VIN in the instrument cluster
A default value in the EEPROM is used until a CAN index message is sent when the ignition is switched on.
If the EEPROM is in an unlocked (unprotected) condition, the manipulation point will flash, irrespective of whether or not the
stored data matches or conflicts.

DIAGNOSTICS
The instrument cluster provides an interface (gateway) for data transfer between T4 and the vehicle control modules.
Individual control modules subject their functional capabilities to self diagnostic checks. Any irregularities or malfunctions are
stored in the form of Diagnostic Trouble codes (DTCs) in the control module error memory. The error memory can be
interrogated by T4 to establish and diagnose the cause of the DTCs.
The instrument cluster RAM can be reset with T4. When this procedure is performed, all values stored in the RAM will be
erased. Displayed values to the driver, such as trip meter reading and on-board computer sequence and values, will also be
erased and resume their default values or are reset to values of zero.
The instrument cluster also performs a self diagnostic routine to check its function and monitoring of related components.
Detected errors are written to the RAM initially and then transferred to the EEPROM when the ignition is switched off. The
EEPROM will only store the five most recent errors (DTCs). If five DTCs are stored, only further DTCs of the bus systems or
instrument cluster EEPROM DTCs will be memorised in their order of occurrence. DTCs already present will be over written.
The DTCs can be retrieved and diagnosed with T4. When the instrument cluster is reset, DTCs stored in the EEPROM are
transferred to the RAM and then erased.
INDICATOR ACTIVATION

18 Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) indicator
Functionality for each indicator is described below. Some indicators, when illuminated, are accompanied by a chime from the
sounder and a message in the instrument cluster message center.
The glow plug indicator is illuminated by the ECM and the instrument cluster software. The glow plug indicator illuminates in
an amber color when the ignition is moved to position II. There is a bulb check function for this indicator.
The indicator is illuminated by signals from the ECM which equate to the time which the glow plugs are energised. When the
glow plug heating time is complete, the indicator is extinguished.
The glow plug indicator also serves a second function for the EDC system. If a major EDC system fault occurs when the
engine is running, the glow plug indicator will be illuminated permanently and a message generated in the message center.
The driver must seek attention to the engine management system at a Land Rover dealer as soon as possible.
The DSC indicator is controlled by the ABS module and the instrument cluster software. The indicator illuminates briefly in an
amber color when the ignition is moved to position II. If DSC is selected off, the indicator remains illuminated.
When DSC is active, the indicator flashes to inform the driver that the system is regulating engine output and braking forces.
If the indicator lamp remains illuminated after the engine is started or illuminates when driving, the DSC system has a fault or
DSC has been deselected using the instrument panel switch.
If the vehicle battery has been disconnected, the DSC will be deactivated and the indicator will remain illuminated at ignition
on when the battery is reconnected. The DSC can be reactivated by driving the vehicle a short distance or by turning the
steering fully from lock to lock with the engine running. Reactivation is indicated by the indicator lamp extinguishing.
The HDC indicator is controlled by the ABS module and the instrument cluster software. The indicator illuminates briefly in a
green color when the ignition is moved to position II. The indicator is also illuminated when HDC is selected on and the vehicle
speed is less than 20 mph (35 km/h).
If HDC is selected on and the vehicle speed is faster than the operating speed, the indicator will flash and a message 'NO
HDC, SLOW DOWN' on 3.0L Td6 models or 'HDC NOT AVAILABLE SPEED TOO HIGH' on 4.4L V8 and 4.2L V8 Supercharged
models will be displayed in the message center.
If the use of HDC causes the brake discs to exceed their pre-determined temperature, the HDC initiates 'fade out'. The
indicator flashes during 'fade out' and, on 3.0L Td6 models only, a message 'HDC TEMP. NOT AVAIL' will be displayed in the
message center. When the brake discs have cooled, HDC is reactivated, the indicator illuminates and the message is removed
from the message center.
The SRS warning indicator is controlled by the restraints control module and the instrument cluster software. The indicator
illuminates briefly in a red color when the ignition is moved to position II. If a fault is detected in the SRS system, the
restraints control module illuminates the SRS warning indicator continuously.
The ABS warning indicator is controlled by the ABS module and the instrument cluster software. The indicator illuminates
briefly in an amber color when the ignition is moved to position II. If the indicator remains illuminated or illuminates when
driving, a fault with the ABS system has occurred.
If the vehicle battery has been disconnected, the ABS will be deactivated and the warning indicator will remain illuminated at
ignition on when the battery is reconnected. The ABS can be reactivated by driving the vehicle a short distance or by turning
the steering fully from lock to lock with the engine running. Reactivation is indicated by the warning indicator extinguishing.
This warning indicator displays a number of conditions to the driver as follows. The indicator can be illuminated in an amber or
red color depending on the existing fault condition. The indicator is illuminated, flashing alternately between an amber and red
color, for a brief period with the ignition in position II. If no fault conditions exist, the indicator is extinguished after the bulb
check period.
The functions of the general brake warning are assigned in priority. Fault conditions which use a red illumination have priority
over amber illuminated faults.
The front brake pads are fitted with a wear indicator system. The front left hand and rear right hand pads are wired in
series to the instrument cluster which continuously monitors the circuit. When one or both pads wear to their allowed
limit, the indicator circuit is broken and detected by the instrument cluster software.
- The instrument cluster illuminates the general brake warning indicator in a red color. The instrument cluster
simultaneously, transmits a message to the LCM which displays 'CHECK BRAKE PADS' in the message center.
- When the brake pads are replaced, the instrument cluster withdraws the message and the warning indicator
illumination when the ignition is in position II, the engine is not running and the vehicle is not moving for 30
seconds.
If a failure of the EBD function occurs, the ABS module passes a message to the instrument cluster. The cluster
software illuminates the general brake warning indicator in a red color for as long as the fault condition exists.
The brake fluid reservoir is fitted with a sensor which reports the fluid level to the LCM. When the ignition is switched
to position II, the LCM checks the fluid level immediately. To prevent false warnings when the vehicle is moving, the
LCM then monitors the fluid level with a 25 second delay.
- If the LCM detects a low brake fluid situation the LCM displays 'CHECK BRAKE FLUID' in the message center.
Simultaneously, a message is sent to the instrument cluster which evaluates the message via the cluster
software and illuminates the general brake warning indicator in a red color, accompanied by an intermittent
chime from the sounder.
If a failure of the emergency brake assist function occurs, the ABS module issues a CAN message which is received by
the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster illuminates the general brake warning indicator in an amber color for as
long as the failure message is present on the CAN.
Handbrake
The handbrake warning indicator is controlled by the LCM and the instrument cluster software. The indicator is illuminated in a
red color briefly with the ignition in position II. If the handbrake is applied, the indicator remains illuminated, until the hand
brake is released.
If the vehicle is driven with the handbrake applied, the LCM monitors the vehicle speed. When the speed reaches 3 mph (5
km/h), the LCM displays 'RELEASE HANDBRAKE' in the message center, accompanied by an intermittent chime from the
sounder for 20 seconds.
The indicator illuminates in a red color at all times with the ignition in position II and the engine not running. If the indicator
remains illuminated when the engine is started or illuminates when driving, the engine oil pressure is low and the engine must
be stopped immediately to prevent serious damage to the engine internal components. When the indicator illuminates with
the engine running, the instrument cluster displays 'STOP! ENGINE OIL PRESS' in the message center.
The battery charge indicator is controlled by the ECM and the instrument cluster software.
The battery charge indicator illuminates in a red color with the ignition in position II and the engine not running. If the
indicator remains illuminated when the engine is started or illuminates when driving, the generator charge output has failed.
The rear fog lamp operation is controlled by the LCM. The rear fog lamps can only be selected on when the ignition switch is in
position II, the lighting control switch is in the side lamp or headlamp position and the front fog lamps are selected on. The
rear fog lamp warning indicator illuminates when the rear fog lamps are active. The warning indicator is extinguished if the
rear fog lamps are selected off, the front fog lamps are selected off, the lighting control switch is selected off or the ignition is
switched off.
The front fog lamp operation is controlled by the LCM. The front fog lamps can only be selected on when the ignition switch is
in position II and the lighting control switch is in the side lamp or headlamp position. The front fog lamp warning indicator
illuminates when the front fog lamps are active. The warning indicator is extinguished if the front fog lamp is selected off, the
lighting control switch is selected off or the ignition is switched off.
The MIL operation is controlled by the ECM and the instrument cluster software. The indicator illuminates in an amber color at
all times with the ignition in position II and the engine not running. When the engine is started, the MIL is extinguished,
providing that no OBD related faults are active. If the MIL remains illuminated or illuminates when driving, a fault is present
and must be investigated as soon as possible.
Cruise Control
The cruise control indicator is controlled by the ECM and the instrument cluster software. The cruise control indicator is not
illuminated as a bulb check when the ignition is in position II. The indicator illuminates to indicate to the driver that cruise
control has been selected on. The indicator does not inform the driver of the status of the cruise control, i.e.; engaged or not
engaged.
Seat Belt
The seat belt warning indicator is controlled by the restraints control module, the LCM and instrument cluster software.
On vehicles in markets where seat belt buckle switches are not required, the seat belt warning indicator is illuminated in a red
color briefly with the ignition in position II.
On vehicles in markets where seat buckle switches are required, the seat belt warning indicator is illuminated in a red color
with the ignition in position II. The indicator is only extinguished when the seat belt buckle switch contacts are broken by
fastening of the seat belt. The illumination of the indicator is accompanied by 'FASTEN SEATBELTS' displayed in the message
center and an intermittent chime from the sounder.
The low fuel warning indicator, located in the fuel level gage, is illuminated in an amber color briefly with the ignition in
position II.
The warning indicator is controlled by the instrument cluster software which measures the output signals from the fuel tank
level sensors.
If the fuel tank volume falls to or below 10 liters for Td6 and 12 liters for 4.4L V8/4.2L V8 SC, the instrument cluster
illuminates the indicator to inform the driver of the low fuel level.
The AFS indicator is illuminated in an amber color for a two second bulb check when the ignition switch is moved to position
II.
The AFS indicator displays AFS system failures to the driver. If a failure occurs, the indicator will flash continuously until the
fault is rectified.
Trailer
The trailer indicator is controlled by the instrument cluster software on receipt of CAN signals from the LCM.
When a trailer is connected to the vehicle and the turn signal indicator is operated, the LCM transmits a signal to the
instrument cluster to operate the trailer indicator.
The instrument cluster software controls the flash rate of the indicator which illuminates in a green color. The trailer indicator
flashes slowly, accompanied simultaneously by a sound from the instrument cluster sounder, at the same rate as the turn
signal indicators.
The TPMS indicator is controlled by the instrument cluster software on receipt of CAN signals from the TPMS module.
The indicator is illuminated in an amber color for a two second bulb check when the ignition switch is moved to position II.
If the indicator remains illuminated after the engine is started or illuminates when driving, the TPMS has developed a fault.
The tire pressures should be monitored manually until the fault is rectified.

Overview
Data is provided to the instrument cluster from other subsystem modules in the form of controller area network (CAN)
messages. The instrument cluster identifies the signals and displays the appropriate message in the message center. Most
messages are accompanied by a chime or series of chimes which are requested by the module generating the message. For
more information, refer to the relevant workshop manual section.
CAUTION: If a new instrument cluster is to be installed, the instrument cluster renewal procedure must be carried out
using the approved diagnostic system. This will ensure that the CCF data is correctly transferred from the central junction box
(CJB) to the replacement cluster. The CCF will also need to be updated using the approved diagnostic system if the vehicle is
modified in service from its original factory specification. This can include the fitting of non-standard wheels and/or tires and
optional accessory dealer install components with an electrical interface, such as park distance control.
The CCF contains all relevant data about the specification and market condition of the applicable vehicle, immobilization codes
and driver personal settings. This information is retained in the CJB, the engine control module (ECM) and the instrument
cluster enabling each system module to detect which systems and components are installed to the vehicle. The information is
continuously transferred between these three system modules to ensure that the data is constantly backed-up between the
modules.
2. Confirm which, if any, warning lights and/or messages were displayed on the instrument cluster. For a list of
messages, refer to workshop manual section 413-08 - Information and Message Center.

GENERAL
The instrument cluster has two separate LCD's which show the following data:
The LCD is an integral part of the instrument cluster. The LCD comprises black segments on a grey background or green
illuminated when the lighting control switch is in the side lamp or headlamp position. The LCD is illuminated by backlighting
which is provided by LEDs.
The backlighting has a manual brightness control. The manual brightness control is only available when the lighting control
switch is on and is operated using the illumination dimmer rheostat on the lighting control switch. The automatic brightness
adjustment is controlled by the instrument cluster processor from a sensor located in the Touch Screen Display (TSD).
ODOMETER
The odometer displays the total distance which the vehicle has travelled. This is calculated by the processor using the wheel
speed signals received from the ABS module. The total mileage information is made available to other systems on the I and K
Buses and is only transmitted in kilometers, irrespective of market configuration.
The odometer display can show distances travelled up to 999,999 miles or kilometers. When the ignition is off, pressing the
left hand instrument cluster button, will allow the odometer reading to be displayed for 25 seconds.
The total distance is also recorded in the instrument cluster EEPROM and RAM. This is recorded after every 2 kilometers
travelled and transmitted to the LCM at every ignition off cycle. The LCM stores this information in 100 kilometer intervals and
the discrepancy between the instrument cluster and the LCM cannot exceed 2000 kilometers. This data is stored and
compared to that in the instrument cluster to protect against illegal alteration of the odometer readings.
TRIP METER
The trip meter displays the total distance which the vehicle has travelled since the last trip meter reset, up to 999.9 miles or
kilometers. This is calculated by the processor using the wheel speed signals from the ABS module and is stored in the
instrument cluster RAM. The trip meter will restart at zero if the total distance exceeds 999.9 miles or kilometers.
The trip meter LCD also contains a small dot, known as the manipulation point. The manipulation point shows if there is a
total distance travelled or other data discrepancy between the instrument cluster and LCM. Refer to 'Redundant Data' section
for further details of information storage.
For additional information, refer to: Instrument Cluster (413-01, Description and Operation).
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE
The external ambient air temperature is measured by a sensor located behind the Land Rover badge on the front grille and is
connected directly to the instrument cluster.
The ambient temperature sensor is an NTC sensor whose resistance falls as the ambient temperature increases. The
instrument cluster outputs a reference voltage of 5.1V to the sensor. The instrument cluster processor evaluates the returned
signal and converts the information into a temperature value and displays the appropriate temperature in the message center.
The temperature display can be adjusted by T4 to be displayed in either Celsius or Fahrenheit, dependent on market
requirements. This can also be changed by the driver using the 'Settings' screen in the TSD.
The instrument cluster continuously transmits the ambient temperature signals on the CAN for use by other systems, when
the ignition is on. When the vehicle is stationary, the signal output is suspended until the vehicle speed reaches 12 mph (20
km/h) to prevent incorrect readings from heat emitted from the engine compartment. When the ignition is off there is no
temperature output.
The sensor is capable of reading temperatures in the range of -45°C (-49°F) to +56°C (+132.8°F). The instrument cluster
message center will display minimum temperatures to -40°C (-40°F) and maximum temperatures to +50°C (+122°F).
If the temperature falls to 4°C (39.2°F) or below, the instrument cluster generates a message when the ignition is on. The
instrument cluster displays the message, 'EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE', with the recorded temperature alongside. The
instrument cluster also emits a single chime from the sounder to alert the driver to the warning message. The display time of
the message is between 6 and 15 seconds, dependant on other displayed messages.
MESSAGE CENTER
The message center is located at the bottom of the instrument cluster. The message center comprises an LCD, which has two,
20 character text displays. The majority of messages are generated by the LCM which monitors system status via the bus
systems and displays system information messages as requested by the controlling module. Other system control modules are
also capable of generating messages to display system status. Some messages are accompanied by a chime, which is
requested by the control module generating the message and generated by the instrument cluster via the sounder.
A check control button is located between the tachometer and the engine coolant temperature gauge. This button allows the
driver to view system status messages which are current in the instrument cluster RAM. Pressing and releasing the check
control button, displays current messages in priority order or, if no messages are present, the message center displays
'CHECK CONTROL OK'.
The messages are assigned priorities, depending on the effect on driving safety and driving ability of the vehicle. New
messages are displayed and accompanied by a chime from the sounder. Messages are divided into priority groups P1, P2 and
P3. The priority groups are as follows:
Priority Group P1
- This group includes messages which have a direct affect on the driving ability and safety of the vehicle, 'STOP!
ENGINE OIL PRESS' for example. This message requires an urgent and immediate reaction from the driver in
response to the message. P1 messages are also accompanied by appropriate flashing warning indicator symbols
adjacent to the message center. If more than one P1 message is present, each message is displayed in turn at 3
second intervals.
Priority Group P2
- This group includes messages which do not directly affect driving ability or safety of the vehicle, 'CHECK
NUMPLATE LIGHT' for example. This message must be noted by the driver and the cause rectified as soon as
possible. Each message is indicated once for a maximum of 23 seconds. They can be recalled by pressing the
check control, RH, button on the instrument cluster.
Priority Group P3
- This group displays messages which relate to fluid levels, 'LOW SCREEN WASH' for example. Depending on the
message, some messages are only displayed at the end of a journey, to avoid irritation to the driver.
Two other groups are defined as 'End of Journey Messages' and 'Special Messages S and S1', as follows:
Most messages, especially S, S1 and P messages are accompanied by a chime from the sounder to alert the driver to their
presence. At the end of a journey, a single chime precedes all end of journey messages.
For 3 minutes after the ignition is switched off, messages can be displayed using the check control RH button on the
instrument cluster. If more than one message is present, the button must be pressed again to display the next message. If no
messages are present, 'CHECK CONTROL OK' will be displayed for as long as the button is pressed.
The messages are displayed in a language applicable to the vehicle market configuration and can be changed using T4. The
following list shows the possible messages which can be displayed.

CONTROL OK messages to display
The gear position display is controlled by the Transmission Control Module (TCM). The gear position is illuminated in response
to CAN messages from the TCM.
The instrument cluster has no control over the gear position display, but monitors the controlling CAN messages. If the
instrument cluster detects ten incorrect CAN messages, 'TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG' is illuminated in the message center. If a
correct CAN message is received when the ignition is next switched on to position II, the error is erased and the message
removed.
The Service Interval Indicator (SIA) is displayed in the message center. The SIA displays information calculated by the
instrument cluster to calculate the remaining distance to the next service based on the amount of fuel used since the last SIA
reset. It can also calculate the remaining time until the next service is required.
For the fuel based remaining distance, the message center displays 'OILSERVICE 1000MLS (KMS)'. The SIA will not display
more than 1000 miles or kilometers and will count down, with a reduction in distance remaining as the vehicle is used. A
vehicle which is driven aggresively will require a service more often than a vehicle which is driven economically.
For the time based period to next service, the message center displays 'INSPECTION 05.2005'. The instrument cluster
calculates the remaining time between services based on the last SIA reset. If the vehicle has not used enough fuel to display
the fuel based oil service, the time based inspection service will be displayed.
NOTE: Japan and NAS markets do not have the time based SIA display. SIA is calculated only on the fuel consumption
in these markets.
The service information is displayed for 5 seconds at each ignition on cycle. A minus sign is displayed alongside the SIA
information if the distance or time has been exceeded and the distance or time by which it has been exceeded.
The SIA information is stored in the instrument cluster EEPROM and can only be reset using T4.
ON-BOARD COMPUTER
The instrument cluster contains software to enable the operation of an on-board computer. The on-board computer functions
can be displayed in the instrument cluster message center or on the Touch Screen Display (TSD).

3 Trip computer 'I' information button
On the TSD, the on-board computer functions are selected by pressing the on-road information button. The computer
functions can also be displayed in the message center by pressing the ' I ' button on the LH steering column multifunction
switch.
The instrument cluster message center shows all the selected computer function messages in a scrolling display. The
information displays can be scrolled through using the information ( I ) button on the LH steering column multifunction switch.
NOTE: Not all of the available trip computer functions can be displayed in the message center.
When the on-board computer is being accessed via the TSD, the TSD communicates with the instrument cluster to display the
trip information in the TSD only. The TSD also allows for the resetting and programming of certain on-board computer
functions, such as the speed limit, message center information display preferences and stop watch.
The on-board computer system of the instrument cluster supplies the TSD with data and commands on the I Bus.
Selections on the TSD are passed to the instrument cluster software for calculation of the text and numerical values to be
displayed. The TSD is purely a user interface with regard to the on-board computer, with the instrument cluster being the
controlling component.
The TSD has one exception to this. Using data supplied by the instrument cluster, the TSD self generates the text messages
which appear on the LCD screen.
The on-board computer trip information will only be displayed if the LCM releases the message center for trip display. This will
only occur if the LCM is not displaying any high priority messages at the time. The LCM registers the request for on-board
computer trip display and, if there are no messages or the displayed message is of a low priority, the on-board computer trip
information is permitted use of the message center.
Pressing the on-board computer button ( I ) on the LH steering column multifunction switch displays the first selected trip
display in the sequence. With each subsequent press of the button, the next trip information in the sequence is displayed. The
displayed information can be programmed by the driver using the TSD and scrolled through continuously to reach the desired
information. One or more of the available trip information selections can be displayed.
When all of the trip displays have been scrolled through once, the message center appears blank, signifying the end of the trip
display. When the trip information is subsequently requested, the message center will display the first function in the
sequence. If the function display is interrupted by a system message from the LCM, when the steering column multifunction
switch button is pressed or the check control button is pressed, the last displayed trip information will reappear in the
message center.
The following list shows the possible on-board computer trip information and their standard sequence of display. This order
will be reinstated after a system reset.

The on-board computer functions are accessed on the TSD by pressing the 'On-Road Information button' on the left hand side
of the TSD. After pressing this button the last displayed screen in the on-road information selection appears in the TSD. The
following screens are available in the on-road information screen:
Each of the screens have four buttons along the bottom of the screen which allow the user to change screens.
The two fuel consumption readings allow the driver to set fuel consumption for different journeys, e.g. fuel consumption 1 can
be reset at the start of each journey and fuel consumption 2 can be reset when the tank is refilled. A 'Reset' button is located
to the right of each fuel consumption figure and allows the figure to be reset to zero.
The 'Tank Range' and 'External Temp' are displayed but cannot be reset or adjusted.
Speed Screen
The Speed screen shows the average speed attained since the last reset and also allows the driver to enable and set the
speed warning.
The speed warning can display 'Off' if it is not active or the set speed. A 'Set' button, located to the right of the speed
warning, when pressed enters the speed warning screen.
NOTE: On vehicles with a navigation system fitted, the 'Arrival Time' and 'Distance' selections are not visible.
The speed warning screen allows the driver to disable or activate the speed warning. The set speed can be adjusted by
pressing the up or down arrows to increase or decrease the required speed. Once set, the screen returns to the 'Speed' screen
which then displays the selected speed or 'Off' if the warning was deselected.
Stopwatch Screen
The Stopwatch screen allows the driver to record a journey time. The stopwatch records hours, minutes, seconds and tenths
of seconds and can be started and stopped using a button below the readout.
The stopwatch also incorporates a lap timer which allows the driver to record a split time at a certain point in the journey. A
'Reset' button allows the stopwatch and lap timer to be reset to zero. The stopwatch cannot be displayed in the message
center.
The trip settings screen allows the driver to select the trip information which is displayed in the message center. If none of the
settings are selected then all trip information is displayed. If one or more are selected then only those are displayed.
Once the selections are made they can be saved by pressing the 'OK' button. The screen then changes back to the previously
displayed on-road information screen.
NOTES:
The stopwatch is not available as a selection and therefore cannot be displayed in the message center.
On vehicles with a navigation system fitted, the 'Arrival Time' and 'Distance' selections are not visible.

General
The Parking Aid provides an audible warning to the driver when any obstacles are in the path of the vehicle during forward
and reverse parking manoeuvres. The system consists of four ultrasonic sensors in each bumper, a control module, a sounder
and a parking switch. The system also uses the sounder driven by the instrument cluster.
At low speed, the parking aid module uses the ultrasonic sensors to monitor the area around the bumpers, then outputs a
warning on the parking aid sounder or the instrument cluster sounder if an object is detected within a monitored area. As well
as detecting solid objects such as posts, walls and other vehicles, the system can also detect less solid objects such as a wire
mesh fence. Objects close to the ground may escape detection but, because of their low height, will not foul the vehicle.
Ultrasonic Sensors
The ultrasonic sensors are transceivers which are installed in inserts in the bumpers. All eight sensors are identical and keyed
to the inserts to ensure correct orientation.
When the system is active, the sensors transmit ultrasonic pulses. Any reflections from the pulses received by the
transmitting and adjacent sensors are then converted to digital format and output to the parking aid module.
The parking aid module is located next to the auxiliary junction box, behind the trim in the right-hand (RH) side of the
luggage compartment.
Three connectors provide the interface between the parking aid module and the vehicle wiring. The parking aid module is
powered by an ignition supply from the central junction box (CJB). In addition to hardwired connections with the ultrasonic
sensors, parking aid sounder and power supply, the parking aid module communicates with the instrument cluster on the I
bus. I bus communication is used for T4 diagnostics and for system operation. System operation related I bus messages
include:

Road speed anti-lock brake system (ABS) module Parking aid module
Reverse gear status Transmission control module Parking aid module
Trailer status Light check module Parking aid module
Ambient temperature Instrument cluster Parking aid module
Instrument cluster sounder request Parking aid module Instrument cluster

The parking aid sounder produces the audible warnings with which the parking aid module informs the driver of system status
and objects detected at the rear of the vehicle. The parking aid sounder is installed behind the trim in the RH side of the
luggage compartment, on the underside of the shelf.
The chime produced on the parking aid sounder has a lower tone than that produced on the instrument cluster sounder (which
is used to warn of objects detected at the front of the vehicle), to enable the driver to differentiate between the two.
Parking Switch
The parking switch is a non latching push switch installed on the centre console for selecting the system on and off. When
pressed, the switch connects a ground to the parking aid module. An orange LED above the switch indicates when the parking
aid system is active. The LED is activated by a power feed from the parking aid module.
General
When the ignition switch is in position II and either reverse gear is selected or the parking switch is pressed, both sets of
acoustic sensors are activated. The parking aid module only activates the system if reverse is selected for more than 1
second, to avoid nuisance audible warnings when the gear selector lever is being moved between Drive and Park. The rear
sensors are disabled when a trailer is connected to the vehicle.
If there are no objects in the detection areas, there are no further audible warnings. If an object is detected, repeated audible
warnings are produced on the parking aid sounder or the instrument cluster sounder as appropriate. The time delay between
the audible warning tones decreases as the distance between the detected object and the vehicle decreases until, at
approximately 250 mm (10 in), the audible warning tone is continuous.
After the initial detection of an object, if there is no decrease in the distance between the object and the vehicle:
If the object is detected by one of the central acoustic sensors the time delay between audible warning tones remains
constant
If the object is detected by a corner transducer the audible warning tones stop after approximately 3 seconds.
The audible warning tones are discontinued when the gearbox selector lever is moved out of reverse, but will restart if the
parking aid module detects a decrease in the distance between the vehicle and an object.
System operation is cancelled when the parking switch is pressed or the ignition is switched off. System operation is also
cancelled if the vehicle travels more than 50 m (164 ft) or forward speed exceeds 19 mph (30 km/h).
The parking aid module software incorporates routines that compensate for the effect of ice, frost and rain on the acoustic
sensors. Ice compensation occurs if the ambient temperature is less than 6°C (43°F).
Diagnostics
The parking aid module performs self check routines and checks the system wiring for short and open circuits. While the
system is active the parking aid module also monitors the data from the acoustic sensors.
If a fault is detected, a related fault code is stored in the non volatile memory of the parking aid module and either the front
sensors, the rear sensors or the complete system is disabled, as appropriate. To advise the driver of the failure, the parking
aid module flashes the indicator LED at 2 Hz and sounds a continuous warning tone for 3 seconds, in place of the normal short
tone, when the system is activated.
Fault codes can be accessed using T4, which communicates with the parking aid module via the instrument cluster and the I
bus.

The Rear View Camera (RVC) system provides the driver with a rear view image displayed on the TSD to assist when
reversing the vehicle.
The RVC is located under the rear spoiler on the upper tail door, adjacent to the centre high mounted stop lamp. The RVC is
connected directly to the TSD via a co-axial cable. The RVC transmits a wide angle, colour image of the area at the rear of the
vehicle which is displayed on the TSD when reverse gear is selected.
Control of the RVC image in the TSD is processed using CAN messages received from the vehicle systems and passed to the
Integrated Head Unit (IHU). When reverse is selected, the transmission position signal is passed from the transmission control
module on the CAN to the IHU which then instructs the TSD to display the rear view image.
The transmission is in 'D' drive and the vehicle speed is more than 16 km/h (10 mph)
'D' drive has been selected on the transmission for more than the 15 seconds time-out period and the vehicle speed is
less than 16 km/h (10 mph).
The RVC is selected by moving the transmission selector lever to 'R' reverse. The TSD changes automatically to RVC display.
The RVC image can be cancelled at any time by pressing the 'return' icon in the top right hand corner of the TSD.
When RVC is active, a disclaimer is displayed across the top of the TSD to warn the driver to take care when performing
reverse manoeuvres.
