What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you interpret
and explain the GEMDAS rule and perform two or more operations on whole numbers
with or without exponents and grouping symbols. The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes your diverse
vocabulary level. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook
you are now using.

What I Have Learned
We follow the MDAS Rule when performing two or more operations. MDAS stands for
Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction.
To use this rule, just remember:
1. Multiply or divide as you go from left to right.
2. Add or subtract as you go from left to right.
What I Can Do
A. In a game, each team will answer a mathematical expression. Let us help them find
out if their solution is correct. If correct, write the word CHECK. If wrong, write the
correct solution.
Team A 6 ÷ 3 + 12 – 9
= 6 ÷ 15 – 9
= 6÷6

What’s New
During a game, two pupils wrote down their solutions to the following task posted by
their teacher.
(4 x 10) + 102 ÷ 5
What is It
To find out whose answer is correct, we are going to follow the rules in performing two
or more operations with exponents and grouping symbols by using the GEMDAS rule.
Let us evaluate the expression (4 x 10) + 102 ÷ 5.
13
CO_Q2_Mathematics6_Module7
Pupil A’s solution is incorrect. The operations within the grouping symbols were
performed first, then the exponential expression was evaluated, but addition was
performed first instead of division.
Here are some examples:
Example A.
3 + [(7 x 4) – 6] First, perform operations within each
grouping symbols.
So, multiply, then subtract the expression
= 3 + [28 - 6] within the brackets.
Example B.
What’s More
1) 20 + 5 x (15 - 8)
2) 42 – (3 x 8) + (48 ÷ 4)
3) 84 ÷ 6 x 22 – (9 + 7)
4) (18 x 7) – (22 – 20)3
5) 12² - 6 x 4 + 12

B. Match the expression on Column A with the answer on Column B. Write the letter of
the correct answer on your answer sheet.
Column A Column B
1) 10 – 3 + 7 x (24 ÷ 3) A. 84
2) (13 – 5) x 3 + 7 – 8 B. 23
3) 5 x 4 + (12 + 22) – 30 ÷ 3 C. 21
4) 8 x 33 + 63 ÷ 9 – 6 D. 217
5) 5 x 4 + (16 ÷ 4) – 3 E. 26
F. 63
We follow the GEMDAS rule when performing two or more operations with exponents and
grouping symbols. GEMDAS stands for Grouping symbols, Exponent, Multiplication,
Division, Addition and Subtraction.
