IV. Brief Description of the Proposal:

To improve the reading ability and comprehension of the students as well as to

increase the MPS of different learning areas for the 2nd Quarter, the CIP Team with
the help of English teacher, will launch a Project named ERA:ABC (Enhancing
Reading Ability of SHS Students: Answer for Better Comprehension). This is to
enhance and improve the capability of the learners in terms of reading and
comprehension.

Project ERA: ABC will be implemented through Modular phase. A design Pre - Test
and Post Test assessment with parallel items will be used for better comparison of
scores. Pre-test as part of the initial phase will deeper understand and examine the
reading capability and comprehension of the students, thus guide the team in giving
interventions. Post-tests, as the last phase of this project, is done to assess the
students’ improvements and to measure the effectiveness of this project.

improve and enhance the Reading and Comprehension of the students and increase
the MPS of the school on the following quarters.

V. Scope of Implementation:

Region III/Bulacan/Obando Senior High School/18 students in Grade 11

VI. Total Funding Requirement:

Php 6,000.00 – Canteen Fund

VII. Implementation Period:

3 to 4 months/12-16 weeks

VIII. Background

Reading comprehension requires the construction of a coherent mental

representation of the information in a text (Butterfuss, 2020).
Improving student achievement in reading comprehension is a long-
standing goal for many educators. Becoming a successful reader is
viewed as one of the most important skills a student can acquire.
Graduates with proficient reading skills have a competitive advantage.
Proficient reading skills give them the potential to be better self-
directed learners (Artis, 2008).

In view of these, Obando Senior High School faculty have examined the
reading ability of the students through the Mean Percentage Sum of
different English subject areas, as reading involves in different
curriculum subjects, during the first quarter of school year 2023-2024.
The low rating of MPS in different areas especially in English subjects
(48.47) is said to be affected by students reading ability thus showed a
low rate of reading comprehension. Also based on the observation of
teachers during classes they observed that some of our grade 11
students do not perform well especially in reading comprehension.

Children with learning difficulties have the same psychological needs

and characteristics as other children. Some of them, however, may be
less able to organize their perception or to comprehend abstracts ideas
and concepts. Some may have poor memory, poor level of motivation,
and short span of attention in work situations or associated
behavioural problems. Above all, owing to encounters of failure they
tend to have low expectations of themselves at school, also low
aspiration. Non- reader or poor readers often have low opinions of
themselves and their abilities. Many times they feel isolated and
behaviour problems can surface. They can perform poorly in other
subjects because they cannot read and understand the materials.
Often the reader tends to “give-up”.

So that, OSHS are providing extra instructional time to help children

achieve levels of literacy that will enable them to be successful through
their school careers and beyond.

So then, Remedial reading program is developed to give additional help

to Obando Senior High School students who have fallen behind to
learn to the best of their ability and to bring back into the mainstream
classes as far as possible.

On the other hand, this project allows building Parent-Teacher

relationships and essential for establishing school-family partnership
that constitutes the foundation for all other forms of family
involvement in education.

X. Project Description

A. Goal:

Reading is fundamental. In fact, it is one of the most important ingredients to

becoming all that you can be. Teaching young children to read helps them develop
their language skills. Most importantly, it can not only help readers become a better
student, but a better person. It also helps them learn to listen.

So as to the Obando Senior High School Family, especially the teachers intends to
provide its fullest service among struggling students in order to enhance reading
aptitude while at the same time promotes healthy independent reading habits
among its students.
