free with a certified education provider like Code Institute. This enables you to learn the
skills to change your career.

How to apply for a Bildungsgutschein

Register your interest with us

Contact one of our education advisors to discuss the course and your future career
opportunities.

Schedule an appointment with the Agentur für Arbeit

You can find your local center simply by searching online, e.g. “Agentur für Arbeit Berlin” or
“Agentur für Arbeit near me”, or by using the BA mobile app. Once you’ve made an
appointment, you’ll be assigned an agent. Use our Bildungsgutschein guide to prepare for your
appointment.

Complete the Admissions Process

This includes completing a coding challenge, which your education advisor will arrange for you.
It’s good to do this as part of your preparation for the appointment with the Agentur für Arbeit,
as it demonstrates your ability and commitment to changing your career.

Approval for our course

Congratulations! Once your application has been approved by the Agentur für Arbeit and our
Admissions team, you will be enrolled on the course.

How the Finanzamt will pay for your education

Whether or not you are entitled to a write-off or tax rebate is determined by the Finanzamt
and is made on a case-by-case basis, so you may be able to get all the money back and, in
some cases, only a partial amount.*

How to apply for a Bildungsgutschein
If you are employed whilst taking the course and wish to file for a write-off or a tax rebate,
you should:

● Arrange a meeting with the Finanzamt to speak with them about your tax arrangements.
This is called Steuererstattung der Weiterbildungskosten. They may even be able to tell you
how much money to expect back.

● To receive money back, you must file your tax return the same year you begin the Full-Stack
course. If your course started before 31st July, you must try to get the tax return filed before
then. You must file the tax return retrospectively if you started after that date.

● As you are earning, you must fill out the yearly ‘Steuererklärung – Werbungskosten N-form’
on the ELSTER account and then forward it to the Finanzamt.

● Once you have filed your tax return, the Finanzamt will process the documentation and
determine if you are entitled to money back.

● Because you are employed, you will get money back as a tax rebate and will get that money
paid back to you.

Applying while unemployed

If you are unemployed whilst taking the course and wish to file for a write-off or a tax rebate,
you should:

● Arrange a meeting with the Finanzamt to speak with them about your tax arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old to change careers?

Code Institute has trained people of every age and has helped people in their 60s change careers
to software development. Employers are more interested in your skills than your age.

I am a total beginner; can I do this course?

There is no prior experience in coding or technology required. The course is designed for those who
are complete beginners as well as those who are building their skills. English is required.

When do I choose my Specialist Skill option?

You can choose your specialist skill option approximately two-thirds of the way through the
programme, just before you complete your fourth portfolio project.

Can I work and study at the same time?

Yes. This programme is very flexible, and the majority of our students work full-time while doing the
programme. While the course must be completed within 52 weeks, students must spend 20 hours
per week on coursework and have 24/7 access to the LMS.

What is a university credit rating?

This means that a university has validated our programme and credit-rated it on a qualifications
framework. Our Diploma is credit-rated by the University of West of Scotland at level 8 on the
Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework, which is equivalent to level 5 on the European
Qualifications Framework. When you partake in and complete this programme, you are a student
and graduate of Code Institute and not a student or graduate of the University of the West of
Scotland.

Is the programme in English only?

Yes. This programme is taught completely in English. IELTS level 6.0 is the minimum level required
if English is not your first language.

What are mentors?

Learners are assigned a personal mentor who provides one-on-one support and guidance on their
projects. Our mentors are experienced professionals working in the tech sector. They are not
employed directly by Code Institute.
