Single phase Induction Motor
The Double-Revolving-Field Theory
The double-revolving-field theory of single-phase
induction motors basically states that-

A stationary pulsating magnetic field can be


resolved into two rotating magnetic fields,
each of equal magnitude but rotating in
opposite directions.

The induction motor responds to each magnetic field


separately, and the net torque in the machine will be
the sum of the torques due to each of the two magnetic
fields.

Let, the rotor is started by spinning it in clockwise direction
with a speed N
Speed of the forward rotating flux = Ns
Speed of the backward rotating flux = - Ns

Slip in forward direction: 0< sf <1

Slip in backward direction:

S=1, induced emf opposite, starting current equal and
opposite. Torque developed equal and opposite, net torque
is zero.

Rotating Magnetic field from 2-phase supply:
A 2-phase balanced supply can produces a rotating magnetic
field of constant magnitude.

Starting single phase induction motor:


1. Split-phase motors

Speed Control of Single-phase Induction Motors

1. Vary the stator frequency.


2. Change the number of poles.
3. Change the applied terminal voltage VT.

Terminal Voltage can be varied in one of three ways


1. Using auto transformer
2. Using SCR or TRIAC
3. Using Resistor
