THE LAST WORD OF A BLUEBIRD POEM

Comprehension
A. 1. A crow spoke to the speaker. The message is for a girl named Lesley.
2. The bluebird had to leave because of the strong north wind which had started blowing.
3. The bluebird bid farewell to its friend Leslie and asked her to be good. It also asked her to wear a
red hood and look for the tracks of skunks in the snow with an axe.
4. The bluebird said that it might come back and sing to Leslie again in the season of spring.

B. 1. a. The speaker is the crow. The crow has brought a message for a girl named Lesley.
b. The crow brought a message from the bluebird. In its message to Lesley, the bluebird said that
it had to leave because of the strong, cold north wind.
2. a. The speaker is the crow. The speaker is talking about the strong, cold north wind which started
blowing. The wind made the starts bright and made ice on the troughs.
b. The bluebird is being referred to as ‘him’ in these lines. The bird suffered because of the cold
north wind. The cold wind made him cough and his tail feathers came off as well. Therefore,
the bird had to fly away from the cold wind.

C. 1. The bluebird is going to a place which is warm. It is going to a place where the cold north wind is
not blowing and where it can spend its winter without suffering much. The birds leave their nests
during winter because they cannot survive in the cold winter. They move with their chicks to a
place which is warmer and come back when the winter season is over.

2. Yes, Lesley was close to the bluebird. The bluebird, in spite of suffering from the cold wind did
not leave without leaving behind a message for her through the crow. He asked her to be good,
asked her to wear a red hood and look for the tracks of skunks in the snow with the help of an axe.
Moreover, it told the crow to convey to her that in the next season of spring, it might come back
and sing to her again.

How do you do?
I just came to tell you
To tell Lesley (will you?)…”
We also know what the bluebird said through the words of the crow—
“But he sent her Good-by,
And said to be good,
And wear her red hood,
And look for the skunk tracks
In the snow with an ax-
And do everything!
And perhaps in the spring
He would come back and sing.”
