ESSAY WRITING
Part-A

What is Essay?
Definition:

Noun: An analytical or interpretative literary composition usually


dealing with a subject from a limited or personal point of view. (An effort
or attempt)

Verb: To make a tentative or experimental effort.

First to know use of the term:

Basic Requirements for Essay:

1. Ideas.
2. Vocabulary.
3. Grammar.
Organisation of Essay:

1. Introduction.
2. Main Body.
3. Conclusion.

INTRODUCTION: Introduce the main idea in the introductory


paragraph.
Use a hook: a hook is used to catch a fish with a help of something
which attracts it. Use an anecdote/ question
mark/exclamation/quotation.

Body: use your data/examples etc. to support your arguments. divide


your matter with paragraphs. Each paragraph should have an
argument/important idea settled in the topic.

LINKERS: change the logic in the essay by using linkers. They are words
like: therefore, so, thus, however, further, in contrast etc.

CONCLUSION: A conclusion is the summing up of the argument/thesis,


you have created in the hook of the essay, there should be no examples
or anecdotes no new idea. The conclusion in a paragraph.

You can use a phrase like: To Conclude. generally speaking, in the
final analysis all things considered, in the long run, in essence, on the
whole, in conclusion we can say etc.

Practice
1. Read the topic carefully.
2. Start the process of BRAIN STORMING, HOW? Write the
main word of the topic in the centre of a page. Then write
whatever comes to your mind related to topic.
3. Write ideas as they come to your mind. Let them be
random.
4. Create a reference keeping in view the importance of the
ideas. Give your ideas numbers in the order of merit.
5. Create a logic;

6. Create a rough draft.
7. Eliminate whatever is unnecessary or irrelevant.
8. Use the basic structure of the essay to create a final draft.
