Artifact #2: Multicultural Lesson Activity Assignment

1. Lesson Objective

Grade Level: 5th grade.

Subject: Science

Write 2 observable objective using Bloom's’ verbs/levels:

1. Students will develop research and cultural awareness skills by discovering leading

scientists from a country of interest from around the world. Identifying the scientist's

background, achievements, and impact in their field. Students will gain an appreciation of

diversity in scientific exploration.

2. Students will also enhance their collaboration/communication skills by comparing and

contrasting their research findings to other classmates. Promoting and respecting cultural

diversity in the world of science.

Multicultural Goal:

1. Students will demonstrate the ability to recognize and appreciate cultural differences

within the classroom environment. Gaining an understanding of inclusivity amongst

peers and those around the world.

2. Materials

● Writing Supplies: pencils

● Research Resources: Computers or tablets

● Reference Material: Book (Thirteen Untold Stories of Scientists and Inventors Almost

Written out of History by Ella Schwartz (Author), Gaby D'Alessandro (Illustrator))

● Template: Research worksheet and Compare/contrast worksheet

● Powerpoint: Example/instructions

● Additional: Writing Journal, paper

3. Instructions: 60 min

First: Before I introduce the lesson for the day I will read to the students a section of the book

Stolen Scientist: Thirteen Untold Stories of Scientists and Inventors Almost Written out of

History by Ella Schwartz (Author), Gaby D'Alessandro (Illustrator). A book that tells the story

of the underrepresented scientist whose works have been taken credit away from by people with

power, money, and cultural advantages. (10min)

Mini Lesson: After the reading students will take some time to reflect on the meaning of the

story just by answering the following questions: why is it important to recognize all scientists

despite their background? I will then ask students to share their answers with the class. Then I

will direct students to listen to my respective views of what my answer is explaining the

importance of recognizing and understanding the importance of learning and respecting cultural

diversity in science but also within any group of people from our classroom to around the world.

(10 min)

Guided Practice: I will revisit a scientist mentioned in our reading and ask the questions I will

be asking the students in their worksheets. Demonstrating an example of the type of information

I will be expecting from their research. (10min)

Independent Practice: Students will choose a scientist from any country that interests them. A

single student to a scientist and two to a country. Research will be done using laptops or tablets
using any online resources. Students will be focusing on information relevant to what is asked on

their worksheet and completing it. The second part of the assignment students will pair up with a

partner with a different country and scientist. Both will fill out a venn diagram depicting the

differences and similarities. (25 min)

Exit slip: Students will write five sentences of an interesting or surprising detail about what the

scientist they learned about and how that detail reflects the cultural background of the scientist.

(5 min)

4. Resources

Powerpoint (slide 6):

5. Reflection

Explain the specific subject concepts, skills taught and the process to ensure that materials were

free of bias and cultural inaccuracies?

My lesson plan was designed to focus on teaching students the multicultural concept of accepting

and respecting cultural diversity amongst themselves and around the world. By implementing

research skills and discovering scientists from different regions not only do students get to

explore the contribution of scientists of different backgrounds. But global perspective, research

methods, critical thinking, and communication skills. To ensure the material was free of bias I

used an inclusive resource to read to the students in the form of a book. I also created my own

template/powerpoint to eliminate any bias. I will encourage students to think about the
information they are gathering online and challenge any stereotypes or assumptions. While also

providing guidance and support throughout the lesson.

Describe specific multicultural knowledge, concepts, skills and instinctual practices implemented

to meet the needs of the diverse students of today?

Implementing multicultural knowledge as an educator I am responsible for having knowledge of

different cultures, languages, ethnicities , religions, and backgrounds. Concepts that are

implemented as an educator should be the skills to develop cultural competence and recognizing

that individuals have multiple social identities. The skill and practices that will be incorporated

include having and inclusive curriculum with diverse perspectives and experiences of science.

Evaluate the level of student engagement in the teaching learning process?

In the teaching learning process the level of student engagement will be evaluated by observing

the students when they pair up and ensuring they are involved in discussing their research and

are participating and interacting. Also I will be asking open ended questions which allow

students to think and reflect about the topic of cultural diversity. I will observe their responses by

asking for participation. Utilizing an exit ticket is another way for students to reflect what they

have learned and will be used to provide additional information or establish any

misunderstandings students have.

List the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson plan?

The lesson plans objectives are clear and easy to understand and help guide the instruction of the

lessons activity. The activity for the lesson includes independent work as well as collaborative

work. A little of both is good as it ensures students are engaged using different formats for

accomplishing the activity. Where the lesson plan falls is the lack of flexibility. There is not a lot
of room for adjustments if students need more time or change interest and may obstruct the

students from learning.
