Declaration of COI

Speaker, advisory boards, product development, quality control for

companies dedicated to the production of LAB, probiotics, postbiotics,
fermented foods.

Board member of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics

and Prebiotics (ISAPP)
THE ISAPP DEFINITION: MORE THAN 17 WORDS
derived from “biotic”: relating to or resulting from the matrix and/or the
living organisms”, “post”: refers to after: after life. inactivation method may play a
role in the effect

Postbiotic: “a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or

their components that confers a health benefit on the host.
the demonstration of the health
benefit is required by a clinical
including cell fragments, trial on the target host
metabolites can be present or not
rather than ‘dead’ or ‘inactive’,
since these latter terms may
suggest an inert material.

CHALLENGES TO THE CATEGORY
OF PRODUCTS CONTAINING
NON-VIABLE MICROBES
THE FUTURE
THE CONTRIBUTION OF DEAD CELLS TO THE PROBIOTIC EFFECTS WE
KNOW SO FAR MAY BE MORE RELEVANT THAN WHAT WE THINK

When the amount of dead cells after freeze-drying is combined with the amount of dead cells after
storage (overfilling), a probiotic product may contain more dead than live cells
SOME STRAINS CAN BE EFFECTIVE AS PROBIOTIC
OR AS A POSTBIOTIC

CONCLUDING REMARKS
✓The definition is an extreme simplification (17 words) of a complex
concept, described in a paper of more than 9000 words.
✓Some leading countries (Canada, China, Hong Kong) started
considering the ISAPP definition to regulate the concept.
✓The unregarded contribution of dead cells in probiotic products may
be very promising to postbiotics.
✓Challenge: to develop validated tools to quantify postbiotics.
23

✓An ISAPP working Group on the topic will take place this year.
Thank you! Gracias!
