Lesson 10

Unit 4: Japanese Characters

Topic: Hiragana: The Vowels

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the writing systems in Japan
using Hiragana Vowels.

Concept Digest (Discussion)

Look at the picture. What can you say about the

picture? That picture is an example of Hiragana
character. That character means letter A. There are (4)
writing system in Japan, namely: ro-maji (Roman
alphabets), hiragana, katakana and kanji.

Hiragana is the basic Japanese phonetic script. It

represents every sound in the Japanese language.
Therefore, you can theoretically write everything in
Hiragana. However, because Japanese is written with no
spaces, this will create nearly indecipherable text.

You can listen to the pronunciation for each

character

audio samples.
JOURNEY 9.a: Let’s write Hiragana!

The Vowels

Note: Particle Hiragana (wa, e and o)

“Wa” is written as (ha), “e” as (he) and “o” as
(wo).

As you can see, there is no yi,ye,wi,wu and we. It

is because these syllables have the same sounds with the
vowel sounds. The n sound is the only independent
consonant syllable that doesn’t take a vowel sound.

When you write Japanese characters, pay special

attention to:
a. length of each the line
b. small hooks
c. how the lines curve
d. angles of lines
e. space between lines
