Tables are commonly seen task 1 charts in IELTS. They are quite simple and that is why it is easy to write a report for
them. However, while writing reports for Tables, we are supposed to be selective and stick to the structure.
STRUCTURE:
1. INTRODUCTION: Paraphrase the introductory sentence given by IELTS by including all essential info.
2. OVERALL: Select key points and describe them in an orderly manner.
3. MAIN PARAGRAPH 1: Details.
4. MAIN PARAGRAPH 2: Details.
5. MAIN PARAGRAPH 3 (optional): Details.
These paragraphs are considered the principal ones, which means describing most of the
MAIN BODIES figures is a must in here. There are at least two bodies that got to be written. However,
many aspects are taken into account to decide how many bodies we write. It is
recommended to write at least 2 but up to 3 bodies.
Mainly used paragraphing methods are as follows:
1. According to the link or correlation. For example: consumption of fruits decreases as
the prices increase;
2. High, medium and low figures can be grouped together;
3. Overall changing patterns;
4. Sharp or slight changes;
5. Time periods;
Try to write comparison sentences and show only important figures from both graphs.

SAMPLE REPORT
The chart below shows the cost of different foodstuffs in the USA in three periods.
Sample:
The table illustrates how much bread, oil, cookies, water, juice and chocolate cost in the USA from 2002 to 2010. Units
are given in US dollars.
Obviously, the price of foods of secondary importance rose, while that of basic products fell, with water and juice
showing the most significant price changes. Although water cost the most in 2002, juice had become more expensive than
any other foodstuff by the end of the period.
MAIN BODIES
The price of water went down significantly from 2.14 to 0.62 from 2002 to 2010. On the contrary, that of juice
experienced a sharp rise, increasing from 0.65 in at the onset of the period to 2.10 at the end, thus becoming the costliest
product.
As for the products that saw a moderate change, bread’s cost, which accounted for 0.82 in 2002, gradually dropped to
0.65 in 2006, before going further down to 0.50 at the very end. Despite this decreasing trend, cookies underwent a steady
growth in the price, rising from 0.51 – the lowest price at the start, to 0.82 in the final year.
When it comes to slightest developments, oil recorded only a 0.07-dollar reduction from 1.08 in 2002 to 1.01 in 2010.
Similarly, but with a different change, chocolate observed the smallest change, which grew from 1.88 in 2002 to 1.92 in
2010 – as a result, it reached the second highest price rank.
