b i Measure of the amount of force acting on a unit area 1 No marks to
be awarded if
the idea of
unit area is
not present
ii 6
Pressure = 1
4×5×5
= 0.06 N/cm 2 1 No fractions
allowed
iii 6 + 50 Allow ECF
Pressure = 1 from (ii)
4×5×5
= 0.56 N/cm 2 1 No fractions
allowed
iv Pressure will increase 1
Surface area
Area of contact has decreased/lesser unit area in contact with the 1
of the stool-
ground
not accepted
1
Total weight of stool and lady remains the same
C2 a i The air in the flask expands when heated 1 No credit if
students write

4
The expanded air escapes into the water 1 air particles
expanded
ii The air in the flask contracts when cooled 1

It occupies less space in the flask/empty spaces in the flask/lower air 1

pressure inside/more air pressure outside
1
The water flows into the flask to take up the space/water level in the
tube rises to take up the space/water level in the beaker falls
b On  a  hot  day,  the  land  heats  up  faster  than  the  sea.   1 Do not accept
if students
Hot  air  over  the  land  rises.   1 simply write
“hot air rises,
Cold,  denser  air  over  the  sea  replaces  this  hot  air.  This  results  in  a   1 cold air sinks”
breeze  from  the  sea  to  the  land.
If students
explain land
breeze
correctly
instead of sea
breeze, minus
1m
c Heat is transferred away from the paper by the water by convection 1

The temperature of the paper rises at a slower rate/speed OR paper 1

did not gain/absorb enough heat to burn OR paper remains cool
enough
C3 a i Vibration of the ruler 1 Do not accept
“movement of

5
ruler”
ii The speed of the ruler’s vibration increases/vibrate faster 1

Hence, frequency of the sound increases/number of vibrations per 1

second increases
1
Results in an increase in the pitch of the sound
iii Volume of the sound will increase 1

The size of the ruler’s vibration increases 1

b i 300 No marks
Time taken = awarded if no
300
=1 s 1 working is
