2. Determine the moment generating function of continuous probability distribution whose

3. Suppose that the number of typographical errors on a single page of the book has a
Poisson distribution with parameter  = 1/2. Calculate the probability that there is at
least one error on the given page.
4. Define Uniform distribution.

11. An automatic car wash facility operates with only one bay. Cars arrive according to a (16)
Poisson distribution with a mean of 4 cars / hr. and may wait in the facility’s parking lot
if the bay is busy. Find the average number of cars waiting in the parking lot, if the
service time.
i) Follows uniform distribution between 8 and 12 minutes.
ii) Follows normal distribution with mean 12 minutes and S.D. 3 minutes.

12. (a) In a bolt factory, machines A, B and C manufacture respectively 25%, 35% and 40% of (8)
the total. Of their output 5, 4, 2 percent are defective bolts. A bolt is drawn at random
from the product and is found to be defective. What are the probabilities that it was
manufactured by machines A, B and C?

14. (a) Suppose that a trainee soldier shoots a target in an independent fashion. If the (8)
probability that the target is shot on any one shot is 0.8.
i) What is the probability that the target would be hit on 6th attempt?
ii) What is the probability that it takes him less than 5 shots?
iii) What is the probability that it takes him an even number of shots?
(b) The mileage which car owners get with certain kind of radial tyre is a random variable (8)
having an exponential distribution with mean 40000 km. Obtain the probability that one
of these tyres will last
i) at least 20000 km, and
ii) at most 30000 km.

15. (a) If 6 dice are thrown simultaneously 720 times, getting 3 or 5 is considered as success. (8)
Find the number of times at least 3 dice to show 3 or 5.

(b) The peak temperature T, as measured in degrees Fahrenheit, on a particular day is (8)
the Gaussian (85, 10) random variable. Determine P T  100  , P T  60  and
P  70  T  100  .

17. (a) Calculate the correlation coefficient for the following data: (8)

(b) If X and Y are two independent random variables which are exponentially distributed (8)
with parameter 1, find the joint pdf of U=X+Y and V=X-Y.

18. (a) Prove that the random process X  t   A.cos 0t    is wide sense stationary process if (8)

(b) There are 2 white marbles in urn A and 3 red marbles in urn B. At each step of the (8)
process, a marble is selected from each urn and the two marbles selected are
interchanged. The state of the related Markov chain is the number of red marbles in
urn A, after the interchange.
i) Find the transition probability matrix of the system.
ii) What is the probability that there are two red marbles in urn A after three steps?
iii) In the long run, what is the probability that there are 2 red marbles in urn A?
