1. Preamble
The Indian Institute of Petroleum & Energy, Visakhapatnam has initiated the Summer
Internship Programme (SIP) from the year 2022. The SIP is open to pre-final year students of
B.E./B.Tech. and M.Sc./M.S./M.Tech. from different Indian Institutions and offers internship
for 8- weeks. The SIP at the IIPE provides the students a platform to explore their research
potential by undertaking focused research projects with young and dynamic faculty at
the IIPE. The purpose of the SIP is to motivate the students in pursuing their career
in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

2. Definitions
2.1 ‘Institute’ refers to Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy, Visakhapatnam.

2.1 ‘President’ refers to President of Board of Governors of Institute.

2.2 ‘Faculty’ refers to all permanent faculty members of Institute.

2.4 ‘SIP Interns’ refers to all applicants who were selected for the Summer Internship
Programme during that particular year.

3. Subject Areas of Internship


3.1 One of the following subject area must be provided by the applicant while applying for
internship.

3.2 All areas of: -

a. Biosciences/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics
b. Chemical Engineering
c. Chemistry
d. Computer Science and Engineering
e. Earth Sciences
f. Electrical Engineering
g. Mathematics
h. Mechanical Engineering
i. Petroleum Engineering

4. Faculty and their area of expertise


Refer IIPE website (https://www.iipe.ac.in/allfaculty). Faculty preference may be provided
by the applicant while applying for internship. However, the faculty preference is subject to
the availability of faculty during summer vacation.

5. Number of internship positions


A maximum of two SIP Interns will be allowed under a faculty which includes interns under
Institute Funded, Project Funded, and Self-Funded.

6. Timeline of Internship
8-weeks during the summer vacation as per academic calendar of the Institute. Usually the
window of summer vacation is around 2 to 2.5 months.

7. Cost of internship application


The applicants shall be required to pay an application fee of Rs. 500/- through Payment
Gateway. Application fees once paid will not be refunded.

8. Funding of SIP Interns


8.1 There are three categories of funding for SIP Interns:

a. Funding from SIP (Institute Funded): Students working under "Funding


from SIP" will receive a consolidated stipend of Rs. 10,000/- for 8-week
duration after completion of the internship.
b. Funding from Project (Project Funded - including Institute Research
Grant and Professional Development Fund): This will provide an
opportunity to the students, to work on projects, which will be funded by
faculty members of IIPE to a maximum consolidated stipend of Rs. 10,000/-
for 8-week duration after completion of the internship. For internship funded
by externally funded project, funding agency guidelines are to be followed.
c. Self-Funded: This will provide an opportunity to the students, to work on
projects of faculty members of IIPE but would not be receiving any
stipend/funding from the IIPE.

9. SIP selection committee


The application received by Office of Dean (R&D) will be forwarded to Department-
wise SIP selection Committees to recommend the applications. The Department-wise
SIP selection Committee is a three-member committee comprising of Head of the
Department as Chairperson, Associate Dean of R&D, and One more faculty member
from the concerned Department/Subject expert nominated by Dean of R&D.

10. Selection criteria


10.1 Only the students of the following courses (and particular semesters) are eligible:
a. B.E./B.Tech. (6th Semester)
b. M.S./M.Sc./M.Tech. (2nd semester)
c. (Dual degree) M.Tech. (8th Semester)
d. (Dual degree) M.Sc. (8th Semester)
Note: Only regular education courses are eligible.

10.2 The applicant selection is based on the CGPA, past research experience, awards, proposed
work, and letters of recommendations.

10.3 Following minimum CGPA criterion will apply


a. CGPA ≥ 7.5 for students of IITs/IISc/Institutes at par with IITs/ NITs/ IISERs/
NISER/ IIEST/CFTIs/Universities with overall NIRF rank (latest ranking) is
less than or equal to 25
b. CGPA ≥ 8.5 for students of other institutes.
c. Aggregate percentage should be more than 65% in 10th and 10+2
10.4 Students with pending backlog and/or disciplinary action are not eligible.

11. Evaluation of SIP interns during Internship


The SIP Interns are required to give a presentation of the work carried out in the first
four weeks to an assessment committee. The assessment committee constitutes Head
of the Department as Chairperson, Associate Dean of R&D, Mentor of the concerned
SIP intern. The assessment committee gives feedback and suggests possible
improvements in the work. At the end of the internship, all the SIP Interns need to
make a poster presentation of the work carried out, which is open to the public. A
commendation certificate will be given to the SIP Interns who display research
inquisitiveness and innovative mind during the internship

12. Other Guidelines


12.1 These SIP Guidelines and/or modifications shall take effect from the date the President
approves.

12.2 Maximum of two SIP interns will be allowed under any particular faculty of IIPE.

12.3 Among the SIP interns, the number of SIP interns for each category are as follows:

*Minimum of 5 SIP interns will be funded through Institute Funding.

12.4 Maximum one student per faculty can be funded from Institute Funded Category.

12.5 The living/hostel/transport expenses have to be borne by the Intern.

12.6 The student is not covered under the institute medical policy. It is advised to have a valid
medical insurance policy during the period of internship.

12.7 SIP is a mandatory 8-week internship programme. A commendation/completion


certificate will only be awarded after completion of 8 weeks of internship. Any leave/late-
joining allowed under special circumstances should be compensated by extended period of
internship beyond the last date.

12.8 All interns will be issued a temporary institute ID card to avail the library, sports, computer
centre, internet, and other institute and departmental research facilities. She/he will be required
to abide by the conduct rules of the institute, failing which the internship will be terminated
and the intern will be asked to leave immediately.

12.9 Applications with all required documents need to be submitted on online portal available
on institute website. The applications are to be signed and stamped by the Head of Department
stating that there is no pending backlog and/or disciplinary action against the said student.

12.11 All doubts and dispute arising out of or in connection with the interpretation of these
guidelines shall be referred to the Director, IIPE, whose decision shall be final and binding on
all.
