● The reservoir is located in Kangra district of the state of
Himachal Pradesh in India.
● It was created in 1975, by building the highest earth ll dam
in India on the Beas River in the wetland zone of the Siwalik
Hills.

Thein Dam
● It is one of the major river valley projects of India.
● It is built on the Ravi river in Pathankot district of Punjab.
● It is also known as 'Ranjit Sagar Dam'.
● The construction of Thein Dam started in 1982 and it was
completed in 1999.
Tehri Dam
● Tehri Dam is the highest dam in India (It is almost 260.5 meters
high and is 592 meters long).
● It is the fourth highest dam in the world.
● located in the Tehri district of Uttarakhand.
● The dam is constructed on the Bhagirathi river.
● Its construction started in 1978 and was completed in 2006.
● It was built in collaboration with the USSR.
● Bene ciary states- Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar
Pradesh and Delhi.
Bhakra Nangal Dam

● Bhakra Nangal Dam is the largest dam (in volume) in India,
while the second largest in height.
● It is built on the Sutlej River in the Bilaspur district of
Himachal Pradesh.
● This gravity dam with a height of 225 meters is the second
largest dam in Asia.
● Bhakra Nangal reservoir is also known as 'Gobind Sagar'.

Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar Dam
● It is the largest man-made reservoir in India located in
Uttar pradesh.
● It is also known as Rihand Dam.
● Rihand Dam is a concrete gravity dam located at Pipri in
Sonbhadra District in Uttar Pradesh, India.
● Its reservoir area is on the border of Madhya Pradesh and
Uttar Pradesh.
● It is located on the Rihand River, a tributary of the Son River.
Matatila dam
● The Matatila Dam is a dam located in Lalitpur district,
Uttar Pradesh.
● It was built in 1958 on the Betwa River.
● This is the joint Project of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya
Pradesh.
● It is also Known as ‘Rani Laxmibai Dam’.
Sardar Sarovar Dam

● Sardar Sarovar is the second largest dam in India.
● This dam built on the Narmada River in Gujarat is 138
meters high (163 meters including foundation). Its
construction started in 1979.
● Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are
the major states to bene t from this dam.
Ukai Dam
● The Ukai Dam was constructed across the Tapti River in
1972.
● It is the second largest reservoir in Gujarat after the Sardar
Sarovar.
● It is also known as Vallabh Sagar.

river basin project after India's independence.
Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

● Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is the largest masonry dam in the
world.
● It is built on the Krishna river.
● It is situated in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh.
● This dam is 490 feet high, 1.6 kilometers long.
● The dam is named after Acharya Nagarjuna, a Buddhist
monk.
Baglihar Dam
● Baglihar dam is a run-of-the-river power project on the
Chenab river in the Ramban district of the Indian union
territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mayurakshi Project
● It is a multipurpose project located in Jharkhand (Chota
Nagpur plateau).
● It is built on the Mayurakshi river.
● It is also known as 'Canada Dam'.

● It is located in Tilaiya in Koderma district in the state of
Jharkhand and opened in 1953.
Maithon Dam
● Maithon Dam is located about 48 kms from Dhanbad City,
jharkhand.
● It is located on the banks of river Barakar.
● This dam was specially designed for ood control and
generates 60,000 kW of electric power.
● There is an underground power station, the rst of its kind
in the whole of SouthEast Asia.
Almatti Dam
● The Almatti Dam is a hydroelectric project on the Krishna
River in North Karnataka, India which was completed in July
2005.

Nizam sagar dam

● Nizam Sagar dam is a reservoir constructed across the
Manjira river, a tributary of the Godavari river in Medak
district of Telangana.
● Nizam Sagar is the oldest dam in the state of Telangana.
● This dam was constructed in 1923 by Mir Osman Ali Khan
(the 7th Nizam of the erstwhile Hyderabad State).
Pochampad Project
● It is also called as Sri Ram Sagar Project.
● It is a multipurpose dam structure across Godavari River.
● It is considered as a Lifeline for North Telangana.
● Sri Ram Sagar project serves irrigation needs in districts
such as Warangal, Karimnagar, Adilabad and Khammam
district.
Polavaram Project
● The Polavaram Project, is an under construction
multi-purpose irrigation project on the Godavari River in
the West Godavari District and East Godavari District in
Andhra Pradesh.
● The project has been accorded national project status by
the Union Government of India.
MullaPeriyar Dam
● It is located in the Cardamom Hills (Kerala) of the Western
Ghats (or Sahyadri) and is controlled by Tamil Nadu.
● The dam is the "cause of dispute" between Tamil Nadu and
Kerala.
● The main reason for the controversy is that it is very old
and has the potential to cause disaster.
Jayakwadi Project
● Jayakwadi Dam is located on the Godavari river in Paithan
taluka of Aurangabad district, Maharashtra.
● The water is mainly used to irrigate agricultural land in the
drought-prone Marathwada region of the state.
Linganamakki Dam
● The Linganamakki Dam was constructed in 1964 by the
Karnataka State Government.
● Located in the Kargal village of Shimoga district.
● The dam has a length of 2.74 kilometers stretching across
the Sharavathi river.
● It is located about 9 km from Jog Falls.
Somasila dam
● Somasila dam is constructed across River Penna near
Somasila in Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh.
● The reservoir can get water by gravity from the Srisailam
reservoir located in Krishna basin.
● It is the biggest storage reservoir in the Penna River basin.
