2 Overview of the CSS#1
The Chinese signalling system #1 (CSS#1) inter-exchange signalling enables the signalling interface between
the DXT and a fixed network (PSTN or PABX). The register signalling (MFC) and digital line signalling system
are used in an automatic telephone switching network in the People's Republic of China. The CSS#1 DXT R2
system is based on the requirements of the ITU-T Q.400–480 and YDN 065–1997.

3 TETRA Line interface adapter (TLIA-S) and the
FNIM ET
The Chinese signalling system #1 inter-exchange signalling can be implemented using either the TETRA Line
interface adapter (TLIA-S) or the FNIM ET interface card.
The TLIA-S is the old plug-in unit used for this purpose. It has been replaced by the FNIM ET because of the
European Union RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in
electrical and electronic equipment. The old units need not be relaced however and they are still supported in
the future. Old TLIA-S units can be used together with new FNIM ET units and therefore the acquisition of
additional hardware does not necessitate the replacement of old hardware.
This chapter describes first the TETRA line interface adapter (TLIA-S) and then the FNIM ET interface card.

3.1 TETRA Line interface adapter (TLIA-S)

The TLIA-S (TETRA Line interface adapter) is a standard-sized plug-in board which can be installed in the
EADS TETRA DXT exchange. Its function is to interface 1...4 external analog PSTN/PABX lines to the 3
internal 4 Mb/s PCM highways of the host exchange subscriber module.
Each PSTN/PABX interface comprises a 2- or 4-wire (jumper-selectable) voiceband line interface and two
E&M DC-signalling interfaces.
The TLIA-S is capable of sending/receiving the following signals to/from each line interface:
• voice signals
• single-tone signalling
• DTMF signalling
• R2–signalling.

3.1.1 Operating environment and external interfaces

The TLIA-S can be installed in either the FNIM or FNIM-A cartridges of the exchange. It interfaces to the
subscriber module controller (SBCN) via its 2x32-pin rear-edge euroconnector and the module backplane. It
also receives its power supplies from the backplane. The TLIA-S has a single HDLC interface and four 2
Mb/s PCM interfaces, although only three of these are used in the TETRA exchange.
The PSTN/PABX line interface signals enter/leave the TLIA-S via a single 3x16–pin euroconnector mounted
on the TLIA-S front panel. The front panel also has two 9-pin D-connectors for connecting a service terminal
to the TLIA-S V.28 serial interface ports.
Note
With the TLIA-S in the DXTip, the line interfaces are connected through the CPTLIA panel.

Manual reset button

The manual reset pushbutton (RES) is located on the TLIA-S front panel. You can reset the TLIA-S by
pressing this button for a moment then releasing it.

3.1.4 Test points and indicator leds

3.1.4.1 Board-mounted test points/connectors

The TLIA-S board-mounted test points/connector pins can be divided into the following groups:

• Sets of test pins connected to various input/outputs of the DSPs and associated circuits. These pins
can be used for signal monitoring.

• JTAG connector pins for the SDSP and ADSP0.

• Supply voltage test pins and GND reference pins.

3.1.4.2 Front panel test sockets

The front panel of the TLIA-S, Figure 1 , has a set of test sockets which can be used to measure the signal
levels transmitted/received to/from each PABX/PSTN line (channel) and to feed a test signal to each line.

3.1.4.3 Front panel indicator LEDs

There are 5 indicator LEDs on the TLIA-S front panel: PWR, SZR, TX, RX, and AUX.

The PWR LED lights only when the board is receiving its +5V and -5V supplies. This LED will not light if
any of these supply voltages is missing.

The information presented by the remaining 4 LEDs depends on the setting of the front panel rotary
LED-function selector switch.

The LED indicators can be set to operate in either of two modes: E&M or line. The mode is selected by
means of LED-function selector switch on the front panel. The TLIA-S front panel is illustrated in Figure 1 .

E&M mode

When the front panel rotary LED-function selector switch is set to any of positions E&M 0..3, the LEDs
indicate the signalling states of the E&M wires of the corresponding line interface as follows:

Line mode

In line mode the SZR, TX, RX, and AUX LEDs show the state of the unit. The different states are:
• State A
The unit has been reset and programs are starting.
• State B
The unit has been configured by the active call control computer (CCC), but the line is not yet ready.
• State C
The unit is ready to receive seizure.
• State D
The unit has been seized for an outgoing call.
• State E
The unit has been seized for an incoming call.
• State F
A fault has been detected in the unit or on the E&M signalling line, or the unit is set OFFLINE. In the
case of a fault, an alarm code is sent to the exchange fault monitoring system.

The state of the unit is indicated by SZR, TX, RX, and AUX as described in Figure 2 .

3.2 FNIM ET
The FNIM ET interface card is a standard sized plug-in board which can be installed in the EADS TETRA
DXT exchange, implemented by an interface card of type ECE2-NT or ECE2-NTC. Its function is to interface
PSTN/PABX lines to the two internal 4 Mb/s PCM highways using two external 2 Mb/s PCMs with 34 channels
each. Unlike the TLIA-S, which provides analogue signalling which can be transformed into digital when
necessary, the FNIM ET provides digital signaling which can be transformed into analogue when necessary.
The two PCM's can be configured to provide two R2 interfaces, two G4WIF interfaces, or one R2 interface
and/or one G4WIF interface.

The FNIM ET is capable of sending/receiving the following signals to/from each line interface:

• voice signals

• single-tone signalling

• DTMF signalling

• R2–signalling.

For more information on the mechanics of the FNIM ET plug-in unit, refer to the document ECE2–NT
Description, dn05177561.

4 Signalling
This chapter describes the signalling implemented by the TLIA-S or by the FNIM ET. It is based on the
requirements of the Chinese signalling system (YDN 065-1997).

4.1 MFC register signalling

The MFC codes used for interregister signalling are specified in Table 2 . The specification allows using a
group of six frequencies in both forward and backward directions. Of the available codes, 15 forward signals
and 10 backward signals are used. The lowest signalling frequency in the backward direction is not used.

Forward signals are sent by the exchange where the call is initiated. Backward signals are sent by the
exchange receiving a call.

The incoming register is used by the exchange which receives the call. It interprets forward signals and
sends backward signals. The outgoing register is used by the exchange initiating the call. It sends forward
signals and interprets backward signals.

4.2 R2 line signalling

In the PCM system, the line signalling is transmitted in the time slot T16, which is used for channel-associated
signalling according to the ITU-T recommendation G.732. Four signalling channels (a, b, c, d) per speech
circuit are available both forwards and backwards. Two of these, 'a' and 'b', are used in both directions.

EADS TETRA System Release 4.5 – 5.5 DN01125145-03-2en

This document and its contents are the property of Airbus DS SAS and must not be copied or circulated without authorisation. 27/48
The TLIA-S interface unit controls the transmitted and reads the received 'a' and 'b' bits through the 4–wire
E&M link. The FNIM ET interface unit controls the transmitted and reads the received 'a' and 'b' bits directly.
The unused signal bits (c, d) are permanently switched to the state c=1 and d=1 in both directions.

The signals are generated either as continuous signals (states) or pulses.

Table 10 illustrates the R2 line signalling. It shows the states of the signal bits 'a' and 'b' in the forward
and backward channels on the PCM line.

PSTN subscriber (B-party) can on-hook and re-answer a call within 60 seconds. The DXT connects the
BUSY tone to the DXT A-party and clears the line when this timeout expires. The DXT subscriber cannot
re-answer the call after the on-hook. The DXT receives a clear-back signal and a BUSY tone is sent to the
line when the DXT B-party in on-hook.

4.2.1 Signalling flow charts

The signalling flow charts of this section show the signalling states on the PCM signal channel. The flow
charts for the TLIA-S and the FNIM ET are identical except for the names of the signal channel bits 'a'
and 'b' to be transmitted and received.

5 Signalling tones
This chapter specifies the tones which the interface unit generates and transmits to the voice line during a call
or a call set-up. The voice line has two audible tones: the BUSY tone and the RINGING BACK tone.

5.1 BUSY
The BUSY tone is used along with the clear back line signal. The B-party does not hear this tone. If the DXT
B-party is busy, the tone is sent from A-party exchange. The BUSY tone will be repeated continuously.

6 Parameters
This chapter introduces the China-specific R2 signalling parameter used in the DXT. For more information on
parameters, refer to the document Reference Manual for the Infrastructure Parameters, dn00126593.

6.1 R2 signalling
Specifies which set of parameters is used with R2 signalling. The sets of the country-specific parameters are
factory programmed and stored in the DXT. The legal value for China is 86. The default value is 358.

Note

This parameter should be changed using MML commands before creating the plug-in unit in the DXT.

Table 14 :

Type changeable with warning flag

Saved in DXT database
Mandatory yes
Default value 358 (Finland)
Legal values 358 (Finland) 47 (Norway) 44 (United Kingdom) 33
(France) 32 (Belgium) 86 (China)
Change after the changing of this parameter the DXT database is
effective updated in 30 seconds. New parameter set is then created
using MML commands (possible existing parameters must
be deleted first). After this the line is switched back to
on-line.

9 Alarm
2628 FNIM EXTERNAL LINE IS OUT OF USE

Meaning

The alarm indicates that an FNIM external line has become faulty or the line is already in a faulty state, but
the reason for the fault has changed.

Several simultaneous alarms (with different supplementary information values) indicate that the situation
is serious.

However, if you have removed one plug-in unit from the FNIM unit, the situation is not serious, although e.g.
four alarms would be generated. The fault is due to the removal of the plug-in unit.
