Author’s Note

The purpose of this report is to inform the people who are interested in
Computer Aided Design (CAD) or its history or the people who need to use CAD
and to explain when, where, how we use CAD and who it is used by.

Introduction

As everybody sees, machines are everywhere and every machines should be

designed. For good design, robustness and interest. Thanks to today’s
technology, we use ‘’computer aided design’’ with a lot of computer programs
and get perfect and solid products. Owing to this programs, we prevent and
minimize the mistakes.

[1]
What is Computer Aided Design?
Computer Aided Design is the use of computer systems to help reveal a part or
a construction that is intended to be manufactured. In simpler terms, it is the
first creation of the part to be manufactured in computer environment.
Thanks to Computer Aided Design, designers and engineers can realize their
designs in electronic environments. In this way, they can make changes on the
designs they make much faster and they can print this electronic information
from the printer whenever they want. [2]

[3]
CAD is everywhere machines exist. Because of machines is everywhere, CAD is
everywhere too. We can say that computer aided design is the first beginning
of an idea to come to life. Designing a product before beginning to produce a
product, is so beneficial for companies. It prevents a lot of mistakes that may
occur.

[4]
History of CAD
The origins of CAD trace back to the early 60s and Patrick Hanratty and Ivan
Sutherland. While working for General Electric, Hanratty developed a program
he called DAC, the first system which used interactive graphics and a numerical
control programming system. [5]
Just two years later, in 1963, Ivan Sutherland designed a system that “broke
new ground in 3D computer modeling and visual simulation, which is the basis
for CAD.” Sutherland called his program Sketchpad, and explained it “let
designers use a light pen to create engineering drawings directly on a CRT.” [6]
In 1971, Hanratty developed a program called ADAM. It was described as
the “first commercially available integrated, interactive graphics design,
drafting, and manufacturing system.” Approximately nine in 10 of CAD
programs find their roots in ADAM. [7]
Hanratty upgraded ADAM over time, enabling it to run on 16-bit, and later 32-
bit computers. With a name change to AD-2000 along with more machining
and surfacing capabilities, the program became a hit. [8]

[9]
Where and How it is used and Who it is used by
First of all, CAD has replaced manual drafting. CAD is used everywhere manual
drafting is used. For example engineering, architecting and desining products.
We use CAD with a lot of computer programs. Solidworks, Autocad and Catia.

Solidworks:
SolidWorks is CAD software for creating 2D and 3D solid models simply, quickly
and efficiently. Like other CAD programs, it specializes in practically specific
goals, creating a unique ecosystem. SolidWorks, which has been continuously
developed since 1995 and reached a wide user base, is basically the first 3D
modeling program to work with Windows operating systems. In a research
conducted by MIT in 2006, SolidWorks; Among the CAD software, the software
with the highest efficiency rate of 95% was chosen. [10]

[11]
AutoCAD:
AutoCAD is one of the world's first vector-based computer-aided design (CAD)
and technical drawing programs developed by Autodesk. AutoCAD, which is
actively used by architects, engineers and designers today, allows two-
dimensional or three-dimensional drawings of projects to be made easily. Since
the drawings made with AutoCAD are independent of resolution, the
dimensions of the drawings can be easily changed without affecting the image
quality. [12]

[13]
Catia:
CATIA (Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application), (Bilgisayar
Catia her
sektörden kesime hitap etmektedir. [14]

*CAD is used by mechanical engineers, civil engineers and architects.

The Advantages of CAD

* It saves time by drawing the product to be designed quickly compared to
drawing on sketch paper.
* It allows you to draw without the need for tools to be used for drawing.
* Drawings provide data transfer and transportation convenience in digital
environment.
* We can go to the details more easily on the drawing, we can see the details
more easily.
* Thanks to the templates registered in the design program, it provides the
opportunity to import the desired part into the design from the program
without drawing.
* It provides the opportunity to change (delete) the drawing in possible
changes or mistakes.
* You can protect your work on your drawings with copyright.
* It allows you to get new works by shortening the time spent on drawings
made on old-style sketch papers thanks to the computer-aided design.
* Since the drawings are the programs and measurement units used all over
the world, it allows you to sell your drawings abroad.
* In cases where the drawing should be in the hands of more than one person,
there is no need for a second drawing because it can be copied. [16]
