EXPECTATIONS

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 6. All the

activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand:
Analyzing Figures of Speech (Personification).

PRETEST

Directions: Write P if the sentence is a personification. Write NP if it is not a

personification.

1. The car danced across the icy road.

2. The angry clouds marched across the sky.
3. The body whispers to the heart pump blood into me.
4. The tulips nodded their heads in the breeze.
5. Money is the only friend I can count on.

RECAP

We have learned that we used figures of speech to add color and

interest to what we say and write. We do this to enrich one’s imagination.
Figurative language is everywhere. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which
you compare one thing to another. For example, “She is a monster in the
playing field” does not mean that the girl is an actual monster. She just
plays like one.

Each figure of speech has different appeals and qualities of conveying

a message, expressions, and meaning.
LESSON

Today, let us talk about a figure of speech intended to represent an

abstract quality – personification. Personification is a figure of speech in
which a thing, an idea, or an animal is given human attributes.

Here are examples:

1. The feathers danced in the wind.

The personification used in the sentence is
danced meaning to illustrate how the feathers
moved in the wind. Feathers have no legs so,
they cannot dance. Only persons and animals
dance.

2. The willow tree shook her long hair.

The example is referring to the way that the
willow tree’s long branches sway to the wind. By
saying “shook her long hair” the tree is given
characteristics of a human.

3. The wind whistled through the empty forest.

The wind which is a non-living thing is said to
be whistling. However, the wind does not have
lips like a person to whistle.

Other examples of personification are:

 The sun smiled down at us
 The heavens heard the cry of the people.
 The waves beside them danced with glee.
Guided Practice
Say YES if the sentence is a personification, NO if it is not.

Here is the first one.

The ocean sang a mesmerizing song.

This example uses personification to

provide sensory language for the sound the ocean
makes. The ocean cannot literally sing, as a
human can. Therefore, the phrase is figurative
and the ocean is personified, or giving it human
abilities. Make a guess for this example.

An apple a day drives the doctor away.

If your guess is that it is a personification,

you are excellent. An apple can’t drive away a
doctor like a human. The apple is being
personified.

New York is the city that never sleeps.

It uses personification to imply that New

York is constantly a bustling city. The city
cannot literally sleep, nor can the city be awake,
like a human can. However, this common
phrase is accepted which means that New York
is a lively, energetic city, day or night.
ACTIVITIES

Activity 1
Write P if the sentence is a personification, or NP if it is not. Write the
answer on the space before the number.

1. My friend owns a mansion abroad.

2. The delicious smell of the cookies pulled me to the kitchen.
3. He ran like the wind.
4. The gentle wind softly kissed my cheeks as I walked along the seashore.
5. That woman is faster than a speeding bullet.

Activity 2
In front of a mirror, recite this poem and list down the personifications in
your notebook.
Dinnertime Chorus
by Sharon Hendricks
The teapot sang as the water boiled
The ice cubes cackled in their glass
The teacups chattered to one another.
While the chairs were passing gas
The gravy gurgled merrily
As the oil danced in a pan.

WRAP-UP

To wrap everything up that we have talked about in this lesson, let us

always remember that personification is a figure of speech that attributes
human thoughts, actions, characters, or emotions to something that is not a
human. Personification is an effective literary device used to enhance
writing. It makes literature and writing more engaging and interesting. In
many cases, it brings life to abstract objects or ideas.
